Families were urged to hurl abuse at Muslim fighter Hakim who was the “bad guy” in the Easter bout. Holiday camp bosses have insisted the controversial content was not agreed entertainment and they have complained to those involved in the Saturday night spectacle. Father-of-two Christian Ceriso, 41, was watching the Superslam Wrestling show with his daughters Amelia, eight, and six-year-old Esme during a weekend break to the holiday giant’s Skegness resort in Lincolnshire. Mr Ceriso, a PR company director from Newcastle, described one section of the show as “a horrific race hate-filled 10 minutes of everything wrong on racial stereotypes”. He added: “Certainly in my mind we were led to believe that Hakim was the Muslim against the good English guy in Tony Spitfire. “I think Butlin’s and the wrestling company they employ to draw those lines along kind of race or national issues was a poor error of judgement.” Butlin’s said the bout was a “deviation from the agreed content” and says it’s conducting a full review. The Superslam Wrestling show is aimed at children and a description posted on the Butlin’s website says: “Get ready to boo the bad guys and cheer your favourites as the atmosphere is always electric and guaranteed to have everyone on their feet enjoying themselves.” Skegness Butlin’s resort director Chris Baron said yesterday: “We had a wrestling company in on Saturday who did a show we are not happy about. “That part of the show was not agreed. It was not funny or acceptable.” Some will probably say it's only wrestling and this has been a staple form of cheap heat for years and years. But I must admit I gave up on one of the promotions local to me after similar scenes with an exaggerated African tribesman gimmick aimed at getting the same kind of heel reactions. (From the ECW-ish "Where's your visa," to the equally encouraged "Fuck off back home," etc.) It's pretty uncomfortable to witness the ugly, deep rooted prejudices of your fellow paying customers whipped up to the surface for the sake of an otherwise camp and casual wrestling match, especially with many impressionable kids in the audience. Half the stories in the press come from social media these days. I've tweeted a couple of things and had DMs from Sky and the Newspapers asking if they can use my tweets/pictures and asking for more info. Cruising twitter has replaced journalism. Sounded like you were trying to trivialise it by pointing out the guy's occupation and some conjecture on his motivation for reporting it. If I've got that wrong, I apologise.
