Shane O' Mac Version 2 Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 I was going to integrate this into the "super cards" topic, but then decided it was a different kettle of fish, so here we are.  The process of getting MMA legalised in New York is slowly taking form, and assuming it happens in the next year, it will obviously be massive for the UFC. So if you were Dana White, how would you book a MMA supercard to take place in Madison Square Garden?  Rules: 1. Maximum of 12 fights, 5 on the main card, 7 prelims 2. Assuming it is a year or so from now, rankings will have changed slightly. So if someone isn't in title contention right now, they could have worked it out by May-June-July of 2012. 3. Given Zuffa's acquistion of Strikeforce and the emergence of dual contracts, one Strikeforce star may be used on the show. For the purpose of this, Nick Diaz is a UFC fighter.  UFC 145- May 26, 2012, Madison Square Garden  UFC Light Heavyweight Championship- Jon Jones © vs Rashad Evans Heavyweight bout: Brock Lesnar vs Fedor Emelianenko UFC Middleweight Championship- Anderson Silva © vs Brian Stann Welterweight bout: BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz UFC Bantamweight Championship- Urijah Faber © vs Miguel Torres  Spike Prelims Heavyweight bout: Matt Mitrione vs Stefan Struve Lightweight bout: Anthony Pettis vs Mark Bocek  Facebook Prelims Lightweight bout: Edson Barboza vs Charles Oliveira Featherweight bout: Dustin Poirier vs Leonard Garcia Middleweight bout: Dan Miller vs Kyle Noke Light Heavyweight bout: Karlos Vemola vs Igor Pokrajac Welterweight bout: Brian Ebersole vs Carlos Eduardo Rocha

Not sure if the New York athletic commission will allow Kimbo Slice to beat up a corpse  @Shane O Mac. Nick Diaz is a UFC fighter now. He's dropped his Strikeforce title and shall fight in UFC from now on, however Dana did say he could always do both.  Joe Son ain't dead, although I believe he is probably going away for a loooooong time. Also, unlike to father any kids.
Shane O' Mac Version 2 Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 About Nick Diaz, he has a dual contract with UFC and Strikeforce, meaning he can take fights in both promotions. If GSP embarrasses him, he may just be sent packing to Strikeforce (although I do doubt that). I had no idea MSG closed throughout the year, but the timing isn't all that relevant, more to do with what sort of show will occur once those hurdles are jumped.

Interestingly you have two fighters (Struve and Pettis) who lost at the TUF finale and their victors are no where near the card, one of which by your logic should be sent packing back to StrikeForce as he did get put in his place by Clay Guida
Bluetonic Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Such a stupid idea - why would you put pretty much all your PPV draws, bar GSP on one show? The very idea of UFC being in New York (which still isn't as cut and dried as people think) means that you could put any old shit on, and it'd sell.

Also, I think Dana would like the idea of showing that UFC>Strikeforce. Â Such a stupid idea - why would you put pretty much all your PPV draws, bar GSP on one show? The very idea of UFC being in New York (which still isn't as cut and dried as people think) means that you could put any old shit on, and it'd sell. UFC 100 was loaded, so was UFC 129 for the first time in Toronto. There's still 4 champions that aren't on the card, plus a couple of big names like Rampage, Machida, Mir, Big Nog, Franklin, Griffin, Bisping, Wandy. All names that could headline international cards or "B-level" PPVs that sometimes occur around that time of year. Also, a year from now, guys like Jose Aldo will probably be able to sell a PPV. It's just a bit of fantasy booking, no harm in it. Â You're right that UFC in New York would sell easily, but you'd still want a quality show. Why don't you come up with an effort then?
dangerously420 Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Sorry for asking but why can't UFC hold events in New York that it needs to be made legal for them to be able to hold events. Basically what is illegal about an organised MMA event in one state that in another is legal?
Shane O' Mac Version 2 Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 In America, every state has its own athletic commission, that regulates all sporting events. The powers that be in NY deem MMA too dangerous, despite evidence to the contrary.
Whiskey_Jim Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 In America, every state has its own athletic commission, that regulates all sporting events. Ross Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 But boxing has been around a lot longer than MMA and so deeply ingrained in sporting history. Trying to get a new combat sport legislated is a lot harder.
the_mole Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 MMA will not be legal in New York anytime soon, they hate the Fertittas and Station Casinos. New York is one of the most pro union states in the US and it's not likely to get passed, no matter how much it would help their economy. Â Nick Diaz gave up his Strikeforce belt, so he fights only for the UFC now.
