  1. Some recent stuff, finally getting around to watching a few I'd downloaded Halloween time.  Three I enjoyed, two not much so.

    Terror Train (1980)

A fraternity hazing prank goes awry, fast forward three years later and at a Graduation costume party being held on a train, those involved start getting bumped off.  Little in the way of suspense and gore and even the twist regarding the killer I saw coming.  Mediocre.

    Night School (1981)

A mysterious motorcycle helmet wearing killer decapitates their victims, all of whom have a link to a local night school. Despite some red herrings the I.D. of the killer is fairly obvious, as is what happens at the end.  Still, I thought this was pretty good slasher/thriller.

The Girl in the Picture (1985) (YouTube)

Alan works as a photographer and is in a relationship he wants out of.  When his girlfriend beats him to the punch, he decides that he does want her after all.  A gentle romantic comedy, quite subtle at times, although it does feel like a Gregory’s Girl sequel.  Fun side-story with Gregor Fisher as an elder groom too.

    The Driver (1978)

Ryan O’Neal plays a highly skilled getaway driver for hire, one who has always evaded capture, ‘the Detective’ has his sights set on him though.  Another good’un from Walter Hill with some thrilling high-speed car chases. I also liked how everyone is just referred to as the Driver, the Detective, the Player, Glasses, Teeth etc.  No real names.  Not too sure how the police knew to be at the train station mind.

    Final Exam (1981)

A not-very-menacing killer lurks around Lanier College killing students. Why? Who knows? No backstory or reason is ever given. The acting is laughably bad with the tone set in the opening scene. Also way too much filler time where little of note happens before a frantic final 35 minutes. Terrible.

  2. I was just saddened this wasn't ex-Chester City's Gary Bennett, then I could have regaled you with my tale of when him and David Flitcroft (brother of Garry) turned up at Blimpers (shit club in Chester) on Student night.  Bennett admittedly looked sheepish, realizing he was easily the oldest person in there and wondering why on earth he had come, but Flitcroft was trying it on with various of the student girls with no success whatsoever.

  3. Class Reunion (1982) (YouTube)

Part of the National Lampoon's franchise.  Walter Baylor (played by Blackie Dammett, the father of Anthony Kiedis) was the victim of a humiliating high school prank on Graduation Day (he got wanked off my his twin sister in front of the school - don't ask!) and ten years later at the class reunion looks to get some revenge on those involved.  Pretty much a parody of slasher flicks with a motley crue of characters.  There are a few laughs in there, mostly provided by Zane Buzby's Dolores, but on the whole this is poor.  Bar the parody element, the horror Slaughter High (1985) steals the plot almost exactly from this.

  4. A bunch from the past ten days, including a couple of Carry Ons.

    Can’t Buy Me Love (1987)

Ronald Miller wants to be popular and seizing an opportunity pays cheerleader Cindy Marconi to be his girlfriend for one month.  For a time he gets what he wants, though ultimately learns a very valuable lesson.  Really good, moralistic teen comedy and Amanda Peterson shines as Cindy.  Pretty gutted to find out what became of Peterson who died of an accidental drug overdose in 2015.  There's some uncomfortable looking photos of her online and its a crying shame when you see her here and then see what drugs did to her.

    Carry on Abroad (1972)

Capitalizing on the ‘package holiday’ fad, the gang head off to Elsbels and what turns out to be a half-finished hotel.  My favourite of the Carry Ons with a steady stream of one liners.  I’m appreciating Peter Butterworth and Kenneth Connor way more than I used to, both fine comic actors.   Also worth noting that this was the final outing for Charles Hawtrey who was by this point an alcoholic, and most of his scenes see him with a drink in his hand to facilitate his needs.

    Carry on Emmannuelle (1978)

Emmanuelle, wife to the libido less French Ambassador, goes around sleeping with all and sundry.  If the final nail was in the coffin after England (which is even worse than this) the lid was hammered shut here.  Took me three sittings to get through.  What few laughs are garnered from Kenneth Williams’ mugging and the ever reliable Connor.

    Rolling Thunder (1977)

Major Charles Rane returns from Vietnam after spending years in the POW camp.  When some crooks rob him and kill his family, it is only going to end one way.  William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones do a grand job as the returning veterans, both clearly suffering some serious PTSD.   Quality violent, revenge action with an almighty shoot-out as things come to a head.

    Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

When Mikey Tandino is killed whilst visiting his close friend Axel Foley, the Detroit cop takes himself to Beverly Hills to investigate.  Murphy’s star continues to rise as the street-smart Foley and Ashton (Taggart) and Reinhold (Rosewood) make a great double act.  An 80s classic.

    Beverly Hills Cop II (1987)

After Chief Bogomil is shot and almost killed, Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills to look into it, getting help from his old pals Taggart and Rosewood.  A strong sequel to the original, even if parts are clearly cribbed from the first film.  Nice to see Dean Stockwell in this and John Ashton can do little wrong in my eyes.

  5. Also worth noting that eBay take 10% of whatever you charge for shipping.

So if you're wanting to send a VHS second class, which would cost £3.20, you're best on charging around £4.00 to cover your expenses.  If you were only to charge £3.20, which is what would come up if you just followed eBay's instructions on the selling page, then it will probably be costing you around 70p to ship something (factoring in eBay's fees, PayPal's fees and cost of envelope).

The compilation starts off with this upbeat number, a cover of the Grease classic "You're The One That I Want". Arthur Mullard is someone who's face I recognize and I would've said was in "Carry On..." movie but apparantely that is totally wrong. According to wikipedia he was known for being a cockney fella and star of "Romany Jones" which I have no recollection of. Wikipedia also informs me that he committed acts of domestic violence and sexual assault - so we're off to a great start here. I've absolutely no idea who Hylda Baker is at all.

Holiday on the Buses maybe?  A firm ITV3 favourite which he shows up in.  That's the only thing I can remember ever having seen him in.

There's a new documentary on Sky Arts at 9pm tonight called King Rocker. Stewart Lee meets up with post-punk frontman of the Prefects/The Nightingales, Robert Lloyd. They talk about his 40 year career in music over a curry and a pint and have a good laugh about it all. Also directed by Brasseyes, Michael Cumming.

    Trailer ----> https://youtu.be/UEUuvN9S9I4

Nice, I had no idea he was in The Prefects.  I've always enjoyed his stuff with the New Four Seasons and Terminal Hoedown when I've heard them on old John Peel broadcasts so will look forward to checking this out.  Hoping Sky Arts will repeat the documentary Teenage Superstars about the eighties independent Glasgow scene which was on a couple of weeks back but which I missed.

  8. Extreme Prejudice (1987)

Walter Hill directed and starring Nick Nolte as a Texas Ranger who locks horns with his former best friend, played by Powers Boothe, who is now running a Drug's Cartel out of Mexico.  At the same time a Zombie Unit (secret services) is undertaking a secret mission.  Very glad I stuck with this.  You wonder what's going on and I was starting to think this might be my least favourite Walter Hill film, then all of a sudden everything falls into place and you're gripped.  An excellent cast including Michael Ironside, William Forsythe and Clancy Brown alongside the aforementioned Nolte and Boothe.  The violence in the climax is something else!

Was anyone from WoS cool? Nearest I can think of would be Rollerball Rocco, but I don't know if "cool" would be the right word to describe him back then.

Clive Myers maybe?  Although there are surprisingly few photos of him on Google.

  10. Completely piggy backing in @pitseleh's post, but I thought Onita was the coolest fucker on the planet when I watched this match last year.  Band aid's taped to his face, leather jacket, cigarette hanging from mouth and swamped by photographers.  From 2:35 onwards.
