  1. I've spent the last 18 months or so researching my local non-league football team, which has involved an awful lot of time down the library going through their newspaper archives on the microfilm. I often get distracted reading what else was going at the time, this was once such instant.  Meet 16-year old David Everton (clipping is from some time in the early-to-mid 1980s).

Anyone know how much Gary Hart: My Life In Wrestling can realistically fetch? I've seen listings for lots of money on eBay but don't know if they sell for that amount.

I sold my copy on eBay several years ago and it went for roughly £90.  Read once and had been sat on a shelf for the best part of 15 years since.  It was never going to get read again and I had a diminishing interest in wrestling so thought I'd pass it on to someone else.

It had a lot of watchers but only two or three people actually put bids in; I think most were keeping an eye on to see how much it would sell for.  Whilst their are some sky-high listings for that book about, the amount of people willing to pay those prices are few (if any) and far between.

My copy of Hooker, the Lou Thesz autobiography (Crowbar Press version), went for ÂŁ40ish a couple of months later.

SPOILER!!!!!!  I haven’t watched it yet but they’re the best team left in so no surprises.

    Apologies.

Edited, but considering there was plenty of talk on last night's episode (including from yourself), happened to assume that everyone who had posted had already watched it.

They’re “The Crustaceans”. They’re excellent quizzers and workshop ideas about what the connection could be, such as naming facts about a clue to see if any corresponding clues will match. It’s everything in between questions that’s annoying.

The captain is a right performing bollocks, doing over the top campy gestures when asking for a hieroglyph, such as a “Rawr” paw for lion, devil horns for horned viper. The captain is married to a team mate and they seem to do over the top gestures at the connecting wall like they’re in the video for Vogue. This is Only Connect, lads, we expect our contestants to be awkward hard drive nonces, not confident flamboyant nonces

The non demonstrative team member seems to be the one who perplexes viewers the most. He’s a typical reserved OC contestant but he only goes by a singular name. He’s used his surname in the London quiz league but he just goes by Dennis here.

All three are University Challenge alumni, with all three captaining their respective Universities, so some serious quiz pedigree.

Dennis went by his full name on UC, Cugini went by a different first name on that show and Harwicke wasn't wearing makeup and dresses either.

    Spoiler

I didn't think the team were that bad in the previous round, possibly because they knew they were in a contest, but last night's episode was over after the first round which meant Hardwick was back to his OTT, campy, theatrical self.  Sadly I can't see them being beaten.

I remember thinking that I should fancy Dorien, but could never quite decide if I did or not. I think she was forced on the audience as someone you should fancy, similar to how those of us brought up on Carry On films became convinced that Barbara Windsor was the most desirable woman on the planet, even though she was surrounded by the likes of Margaret Nolan, Valerie Leon, Gail Grainger, etc.

Gail Grainger, now there is a name I never expected to read on the UKFF.  I think she only ever appeared in the one Carry On, my favourite, playing Kenneth Williams' holiday rep assistant in Carry on Abroad.

  6. I've been thinking about this and while I can't remember any specific crushes on kids' TV personalities when I was younger, the first person who comes to mind is Amelia Bullmore when she was Steph Barnes in Coronation Street.

    spacer.png

The Word era Dani Behr and Melissa Bell from Neighbours were other crushes, but they were both post-Steph.  Glad to see I wasn't the only one who like Nicola Stephenson too, when Anna Friel was getting all the coverage and magazine shoots, it was all about Margaret for me.

  7. I watched 274 films last year, which was down on the 311 from 2021.  A month of horror in October did me in and I didn't watch much for the final two months of the year

I watched Glass Onion last night and overall enjoyed it, although was probably too long and there a couple of moments where you just have to go with it.  My main take though was what a good actress Janelle Monae is.

Yeah, Cancer Research in Brum town have gone down that route and have filled a "retro" section with shit jeans from 2 years ago. Just go down to the Rag Market and get something legit old and interesting for half the price.

It's been a few years since I've been the Rag Market, but there used to be a great second hand clothes stall there run by a guy who looks like a bit of an old Rocker and has probably lived a great life.  In the early 2000s when I used to live in Retro stuff, I would pick up original 70s shirts for a £5 from him.  He'd have second hand Fred Perry tops for the same price, Levi jeans, denim jackets, retro coats, and all ridiculously affordably priced.  For a period there was another chap who had a second hand stall opposite him, but he has long gone.

I love a charity shop, particularly for buying records. I don't mind sometimes overpaying slightly compared to what I could get an album on ebay for, especially in the smaller charity's shops, but British Heart Foundation seems to be the worst around here for "Ah fuck it, stick it on at a tenner" for the most random shite. And it's always water damaged and scratched, like they found it down a well. They had some Asia albums on at ÂŁ20 each the other day. Fucking Asia.

British Heart Foundation prices are a joke.  I was checking out the DVD section just last week and they had second-hand DVD boxsets that were priced at just 50p cheaper than what you can get the box sets for brand new.  I genuinely think they've not got a clue when it comes to stuff like that, records etc.

  9. Similar to Rick, our main interactions were through DVD trading and whenever I was selling off parts of my collection Barry would always get in touch and take stuff off my hands.  As others have said on here and elsewhere, just a really nice guy, pleasant and easy to chat with. RIP buddy.

I assume he's probably right, but Fightful are hedging their bets, and they tend to be a little better on AEW gossip than Meltz. They've just said that the TV match "wasn't the original plan" and that multiple plans for All Out have changed. It might be that Meltzer is still saying it's the plan because nothing has been changed "officially", but something else is in the works. I doubt it, though, purely because I can't think what else they'd do instead.

I don't pay much attention to the news sites these days, but that Sapp seems to hedge his bets an awful lot from what I have seen of him.

    JANUARY 1996

    TVs - FUCK
Dark, Dory Funk Jr goes over Bob Holly and they have a look at the Headhunters (called the Squat Team at the Rumble) against Aldo Montoya & Avatar which goes to a double count-out which probably isnt as wild as you imagine.

Amazingly that Headhunters squash was recorded by someone in the crowd (I've a copy on DVD but it doesn't appear to be on YouTube at the moment).  Here are the final couple of minutes courtesy of Richard Land's Twitter account.

  12. Some recent stuff I've seen:

And Soon the Darkness (1970) (Talking Pictures)

Two young women on a cycling holiday in the French countryside get separated after a row. When the one returns to find her friend, she is nowhere to be seen. What I liked most about this mystery was you didn’t know who to trust, everyone seemed shady. My pick was the old woman. Good film.

    The Daytrippers (1996)

After discovering a love letter written by her husband to someone else, Eliza D’Amico speaks to her mother for advice, resulting in the whole family taking a trip to the City to confront him.  Wonderful character development with each person so distinctive from everyone else. Very funny movie.

    Diamonds for Breakfast (1968)

The son of a Russian Grand Duke recruits a band of female thieves to help him steal back the family jewels that his father lost in a game of roulette and which are being exhibited in a London museum. Quite funny in a silly way, especially the Judo loving triplets

    Fish Tank (2009)

Things change for fifteen-year old Mia when her Mum brings a new boyfriend into their lives. The abduction scene was very uncomfortable watching. Crazy to think Katie Jarvis was plucked off the streets for this role, even crazier to think all her future really had in store was Eastenders. Gritty.

    Harlem Nights (1989)

The success of Sugar Ray’s after hour’s club is noted by Gangster Bugsy Calhoun who wants a significant slice of the profits. Set in the 1930s and has elements of The Sting about it. Could’ve done with being more focussed as tries to mix the seriousness with the comedy too much. Liked it though.

    Blow Out (1981)

Out collecting sound effects for the film he’s working on, Jack Terry accidentally records what he later believes to be the assassination of a Governor, putting himself in danger. Excellent film with a nice false opening. John Lithgow was great as the cold, calculated assassin.

    Honor Society (2022)

An ambitious High School Senior plots to sabotage her rivals’ chances of getting the Guidance Counsellor’s recommendation for Harvard, only to unexpectedly fall for one of them. Gaten Matarazzo, Angourie Rice and an unexpected twist in the final twenty minutes made this a decent enough watch.

    Blue Steel (1990) (All 4)

A rookie Cop shoots dead a convenience store thief when he pulls a gun on her, but in doing so she becomes the object of one of the witness’ desires. Starts promising (although surely the other witnesses could back her up when no-one believes the thief was armed?) but becomes more preposterous and unrealistic the longer it goes on.

  13. A bunch of stuff I've watched over the past few weeks:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

Coming-of-age story about a shy, insecure teen entering high school who befriends a couple of seniors who take him into their group. There are some dark undertones (I guessed about the aunt) so not all sweetness and light. Find yourself friends like Patrick and Sam and you won’t go far wrong.

    Batman: The Movie (1966)

The Penguin, The Joker, The Riddle and Catwoman put their criminal brains together in order to hold the World to ransom, but they’ve got to get Batman out of the way in order to do so. All sorts of camp fun, highlighted by Batman fighting with the rubber shark! Does peter out towards the end.

    Hanky Panky (1982)

A shared cab ride for an innocent architect sets off a chain of events that sees him fleeing for his life and wanted for murder. First half of the film is better than the second as the Government secrets story is all a bit mess and not fully explained. The plane scene is hilarious!

I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978)

Its 1964, the Beatles have arrived in the United States to make their debut appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and a group of friends decide to travel to New York determined to meet their idols. Real fun and a highly entertaining movie. The cast, who are mostly unknown to me, are all excellent.

    Smithereens (1982)

An ambitious young runaway heads to New York to try and break into the Punk scene. Even though Wren is a user and gets what she deserves, she’s a bit of a lost soul who I did feel sorry for in the end. This low budget, indie flick paints a bleak picture of early 80s NY. Quality soundtrack.

    Haunted Honeymoon (1986)

A radio voice actor is set to marry his co-star, however is suffering with panic attacks which are close to costing him his job. In order to cure him, he must be scared to death. My quest to watch more Gilda Radner led me to this stinker. Influenced by 1940s horror, just too weird and not funny.

    Straight Time (1978)

Released on parole after six-years inside, lifelong criminal Max Dembo decides its time to go straight. However after being screwed over by his Parole Officer, he returns to what he knows best. I reckon Dustin Hoffman is one of those actors who is never not on form. Good film and well worth a watch.

    St. Elmo’s Fire (1985)

A group of friends fresh out of College struggle with the transition into adulthood and the real world. Wasn’t a waste of time but not one of my favourite “brat pack” flicks, down mainly to the personalities of the characters. Wendy (Mare Winningham) is the only decent one amongst them ,the creepy obsessive stalker Kirby (Emilio Estevez) the worst of the lot.

    Christine (2016)

The true story of Sarasota news reporter, Christine Chubbuck. Probably Rebecca Hall’s finest performance to date as you can not help but feel Christine’s pain. Even knowing how this ends it is still a shocking watch, can't begin to imagine how those who were watching live felt.

World of Sporters Alan Kilby and Danny Boy Collins got a dark match on that Sheffield show - it may well be that there were plenty more examples that have been lost to time (or at least, to Cagematch), but it looks like the only show on that tour where the local lads got a call.

Definitely no British lads on the Birmingham show the night before. The Sheffield show aired on Sky, so probably just a case of a "dark match" to check levels and everything before they went live.

    A Married Couple (YouTube)

Fantastic late-60s Canadian film about an absolutely horrendous couple being completely horrible to each other. Inadvertently hilarious and groundbreaking, one of the best things I've seen so far this year.

I watched this one last night after your recommendation and you wonder what on earth these two ever saw in each other?  They argue over everything; from the wife's wanting of the most bizarre items (harpsichord, French language learning records and a Grand Piano), to how the husband gets to work, to the husband not putting his shoes away and to the way the wife hoovers the carpet.  And a lot of the time while hubby is only wearing his budgie smugglers.  It's like you're watching a marriage disintegrate before your very eyes.  There was a couple of very uncomfortable moments in there, notably when Billy physically puts his hands on Antoinette and throws her out of the house and also referring to her as a "c*nt" on one occasion.  They only really seemed to be happy when they were with their baby son, who provided one of the most unintentionally funny moments when he told them he'd "shit" on the floor. Amazingly their marriage lasted a further three years and another child before the divorce.  Billy was hit by a car and died in 1995.

  16. I watched The Thin Blue Line (1988) the other night.  Nothing to do with the Rowan Atkinson sitcom of the same name, but about the 1976 murder of a Dallas police officer and the person who was accused and found guilty, protesting their innocence.  I don't want to go into too much detail to spoil things, but the documentary maker interviews a lot of the relevant parties and this feels like one of the first true crime documentaries.  I thought it was an excellent and real thought provoking watch, and you're left in no doubt when the final tape recording is played.

Yup, he's been guilty of it in the past (an incident where Michaela Tabb warned him) and that was caught on camera and he was bang to rights.  Considering how adamant he was towards Olivier and the fact that nothing has yet surfaced makes me believe that nothing happened and the ref thought he saw something he didn't.

I've always felt mixed about O'Sullivan. He's the greatest of all time and makes it look so easy, but I've never been able to get behind him as he comes across as such a nasty little man. I'm still hoping for a Trump win but it's all about this afternoons session. It's hard to imagine Ronnie letting such a lead slip but it's not over yet.

Yet spends Christmas Day working in food shelters helping to feed the homeless. In fact I'd hazard a guess he does more than pretty much any other Snooker player when it comes to helping out others.

The commentators on Eurosport said it was due to Ronnie making a hand gesture after failing to get out of the snooker, Ronne said he didn't make any hand gesture. There doesn't appear to be any camera footage of it.

Considering how many cameras they have on the match, not to mention people filming on their phones, surely if there was some sort of hand gesture it would have come to light instantly after the event, yet here we are 24-hours later and nothing anywhere.
