  1. Currently re-reading Chris Jericho's first book before starting the second one which I'm saving for my plane trip to Mania. Brilliant read, covering his career in good depth and with plenty of funny stuff from his travels in Mexico, Germany and Japan and also some sad stuff about his Mother and the passings of Art Barr and Owen Hart.

  2.

Bit slow off the mark with that, mate, didn't that happen somewhere around June last year? Stewart should have set his phaser on 'Fuck off you fat cunt'.

Aye, earlier I honestly thought that was new as it popped up on Facebook a couple of times. Even so, after seeing the comments people wrote about Patrick being a dick, I watched with anticipation to see him rip Corden to shreds, alas sadly he fucking blew it completely. In light of me being behind the times and in order to redeem Mr.Stewart after his failure to school Corden, I'll post this as a reprieve for him and for me:

  3. I went to see Man on Wire in Liverpool when it was released and there was 3 people in there, by the time the mental prick started his walk and Erik Satie began playing the other two people had left and I was stood up applauding him to do it, that's how pathetically drawn in I was to that story.

I even wrote a small article on it.

The story centers around Philippe Petit, a extremly arrogant yet lovably eccentric frenchman. Petit is quite something to behold, one moment discussing a serious matter concerning his latest caper, the next being enchanted and whimsical about the beauty of his "art", like a sugar rushing child explaining a roller coaster they really like, while stuffing cotton candy at a break neck pace.

Petit's art is of course that he is a highwire walker, and by that I don't mean of the circus variety, this man illegaly performs high wire acts in some of the most important landmarks of the world. Astonishing pictures show him lying in the middle of his cable between Notre Dame, then there is footage of him performing an illegal work across Sidney Harbour Bridge, the walk itself is so fascinating you can't help but find yourself concentrating with interest to how he does it. The walk is accompanied by "Albatross" by Fleetwood Mac, making the walk seem like an insane rejected idea for the "M&S Mental French Suicidal" clothing range.

Petit and his gang of misfits big idea (or the "coup") as it's refered to is an illegal walk between the as yet fully finished towers of the World Trade Center. ONE THOUSAND FEET in the air. The doc then looks at there frequent trips to NYC featuring pictures they taken while in the towers on espionage missions, the pictures of Petit literally starring over the edge into a metropolitan abyss will make almost anyone shake there head in head shaking fear. What's far more fascinating is how this was even possible to pull off; the documentary keeps cutting occasionally to some well needed and enjoyable reconstrutions while the voiceovers carry along all the tension they felt while hiding in the world's biggest buildings ready to potentially kill there friend by helping him, it's nail biting.

Incredibly (and not smoothly, I won't spoil the info for you) they DO somehow get a cable across the buildings, it's 200 feet, an incredible acheivement, but the Wire isn't there best one and almost a bit flimsy, I wouldn't want to hear that about my hair dryer cable never the less a cable I am going to walk on, but Petit isn't like me, he's an oddball, he's French and he doesn't give a shit. So at 7am that morning, Petit braved the abyss and somehow, he starts walking.

The pictures of Petit walking along the wire literally walking on the sky, it's both disturbing in a mind bending way as they are absolutely beautiful, the pangs of Erik Satie play us along and the moment drags you in, you are so damn proud of this band of luncatics yet the pictures make you feel all melancholy and wondering, it's truly a beautiful site to see, especially when I got to see it via a massive cinema screen, just stunning.

Petit caused such a coverage outbrust through his walk it was impossible to jail him, indeed the day he walked, Richard Nixon stepped down from power. In the grimness of it all Petit walked amongst the clouds and did something that no one else (sadly due to the buildings demise, not mentioned but nudge and winked in the film) will EVER do. Man on Wire can be bought in shops. I wouldn't advise you miss it, it's just breathtaking.

Good article chilli. I wrote in the films thread about watching this for the first time about a month ago and echo the positive stuff about it, just an absolutely blinding story wrapped up into a neat film package. Phillipe is such a likeable and infections guy which just made it all the more watchable as he described his adventure.

Having watched Touching the Void again, another top documentary, a question for those of you who have seen it...would you have done the same thing?

  4. I only sent a few names, but rather than nominating those who will surely keep cropping up, I opted to narrow it right down. Wayne Rooney in particular was the subject of my foulest language.

I'd guess it's going to be either Rooney, Ashley Cole or Gary Neville as the highest twat representative for football. I expect that will be Cole.

I think Rooney will just pip Cole. See, over the past twelve months Cole has actually been an alright footballer on the pitch, he's a great left back and all that. But aside from the odd flash of brilliance Rooney has been something of a dreg. On and off the pitch, Rooney's had an unbelievably twattish time over the last year.

  5. Watched Buried the other night and man was this just a great film I was never really sure about Ryan Reynolds but this film changed that for me, well worth a look at

Seconded, I thought Reynolds really did the business here in fairness. Considering it's essentially just him in a coffin for 90-odd minutes he really did a good job of keeping you interested throughout.

  6. Just an idea that may have already been voiced. If Michaels comes back as the special guest referee in a HHH Vs Taker match, perhaps they would use that to set up a HHH heel turn? It would be a significant moment on their biggest PPV of the year.

Taker inevitably wins, Michaels counts the three, match over, HHH and Michaels embrace, kick to the stomach, pedigree...

That being said, they'll be too busy jizzing over another Taker victory to overshadow it with a post match angle i imagine, but saying that...this is Triple H, if he's coming back...surely its with a bang!

Actually I don't mind that too much. If Trips were to come back I think a heel role would do him wonders again. I remember the sentiment behind Austin's Wrestlemania turn, in that he'd come back from a bad career injury and would do literally anything it took to get the title back in his grasp, even if it meant siding with Vince and taking shortcuts because he couldn't beat The Rock one on one.

In the build up here, you could have HHH come back and do a similar thing, the turn at Wrestlemania being something of a catalyst for it. He can't beat Undertaker one on one so he doubts himself. He then uses his power connections with the McMahon's in order to try and claw his way back into the title scene for one last run. It's hardly the wrestler, and we've seen it done before, but I think a HHH heel run has got some mileage in it should they choose to do down such a direction.

  7. March of the Penguins Really well put together documentary about 13 months in the life of a colony of emporer penguins as they basically travel to a mating site and try to reproduce, battling such elements as the cold, the winds, and fending off predators whilst they feed/protect their young. From a technical standpoint some of the shots look absolutely glorious, and credit must go to the poor crew who braved absolutely stupid temperatures to capture the footage that they did. Normally I subscribe to the theory that the viewer cares not about what happens behind the camera and the trials and tribulations of getting the film together, its all about the actual content produced. In this case though I think it needs to be beared in mind, because despite the dreadful cold they still produced such epic footage.

Some of it actually does tug at the heart strings a bit. It's sad to see some penguins not make it, either via the cold or something else unfortunate. But equally its nice to see their triumphs, such as the little'uns being born and making all the hard work seem worth it in their case.

Onto Morgan Freeman who narrates the U.S version which I watched. Empire wrote this:

Sadly, apparently lacking confidence in the strength of their icy images and waddling stars, the filmmakers feel the need to use Morgan Freeman
  8. Paul.

Really good fun and thoroughly enjoyable. Fans of Pegg and Frost won't be dissapointed. It struck me as the kind of comedy that can appeal to a wide audience basically, very easy going aside from the occasional swearing (or in the case of one character, repeated swearing, but you'll get why as you watch it). Seth Rogen in particular does well with his voice work and Paul himself is an easily likeable dude. The supporting cast deliver plenty of laughs too. Not sure of the guys name, but he appears in Superbad and some of the other Rogen comedies as the really stupid guy (The guy in Role Models who takes the warrior game thing really seriouslly. "Rubba dub dub!", he's fucking hilarious and had me in stitches everytime he came on screen for some reason. Jason Bateman is badass as Zion, a rogue agent trying to get to Paul.

    Great film, highly recommended.

  9. So, at last I get a chance to watch Man On Wire. My thoughts? Absolutely brilliant. A fantastic story about a frankly fantastic individual and his desire to do something really spectacular. Straight away the actual DVD menu itself kind of puts things into perspective somewhat; for those who haven't seen it, it contains a graphic of the two towers which is made entirely out of words, stats about the towers including height, width, etc. As if there's any doubt already, it really puts things into perspective at just how massive a feat something like this is.

Aside from having incredible guts and a real talent, Phillipe Petit has such an infectious personality. He comes across as a very intelligent yet incredibly enthusiastic person, even humorous at times. The way he described some of his feelings, i.e when the guards are looking for them, combined with the reconstructions helped paint a vivid picture of the goings on surrounding the stunt.

A couple more things that struck me; there's some brilliant juxtapositioning as we see the towers being built over the years whilst Phillipe is growing up in a split screen sequence. Equally chilling is seeing the towers being built. Also, when Phillipe is doing the walk over the Sydney bridge you clearly see the rope shaking wildly. Even though you know he's fine and he makes it, it still makes you feel a bit uncomfortable!

Overall, seriously enjoyed it. Not everyone will be interested in Phillipe's relationship with his friends and colleagues and girlfriend of the time, but I think it added to the story personally speaking.

  10. Ebb, that was actually the first disc I was hoping to get from LoveFilm in the post, but for some reason they sent me Man On Wire first instead. Not that I'm complaining (about to stick it on as it happens).

If you're on a documentary kick also check out The Thin Blue Line and Crumb if you haven't already.

Also, if you can handle it, I'd recommend Dear Zachary. But be waned! It is very very upsetting.

I forgot to say I'd got Thin Blue Line on the list as well, good shout. I saw it back in my College days but I barely remember anything about it. I've not seen Dear Zachary or Crumb either, will have to stick those on THE LIST~! that I keep talking about.

Excellent Documentary work! Reccomend all, thought March of the Penguins was a bit duff tho. I say go for The Tillman Story and Restrepo are two other recent (and great) Documentaries you should watch!

Surprised on your view about MOTP. It's got Morgan Freeman's voice and a bunch of penguins, I'd say that makes it at least 4/5 stars alone ;) The Tillman story is pretty good actually, I don't think I've heard of the second one you mentioned.

See, in a way I feel bad having not seen many of these before, but only recently has my documentary curiosity turned into more than that. The last year or so at uni have seen me gradually go down that path with regards to what I want to start spending more time making. So I'm striking while the iron is hot so to speak and cramming as much documentary knowledge into my brain as possible.

Can't reember posting about them on here, but I started off my little Doc marathon by watching stuff like Michael Moore's work and Supersize me. Moore's work isn't the best example of fair and balanced reporting as it were, but they are entertaining in their own right and I especially enjoy the debate that comes from his work, i.e you either love it or you think it's a shitty personal essay.

I'm also at the point now where if anything crops up on the tele, I'll watch it. I gave Micheal Portillo's Great British Railway Journey's a quick gander (He did a trip to Cromer via Norwich. Local interest baby!). Nicely put together. That Hugh Dennis and Oz Clarke thing over Christmas where they traveled to different pubs and brewers was good fun as well.

...I feel like I am slowly turning into an old man.

  11. I've got Man On Wire to watch via Lovefilm in the post, so will probably tuck into that tomorrow after work. Heard nothing but good things about it and to be fair I should've seen this when it actually came out. Remarkable story.

Other documentaries I've got on the rental list right now include Touching The Void, Hoop Dreams, March of the Penguins, King of Kong and a Louis Theroux boxset. Dig in!

  12. It won't happen, but a small part of me would like to see the Undertaker enter Money In The Bank, win it easily, and then spend the next year stalking the various world champions in spooky ways before cashing in.

Yes it would involve burying all the young up and comers, and his performance in MITB would be pretty poor most likely... but that's what the selfish mark in me would like to see.

I like the idea, however I think you could do that anyway without him actually winning Money in the Bank. He doesn't need it really, he's fucking Undertaker. If he wants to keep stalking the Champions for a few weeks, brilliant. Eventually he can target a particular champion, do one of his taunts and symbolise the start of a new title feud, and bob's your uncle. This way, you've still got your Money in the Bank guy to elevate in the meantime too.

  13. Has anybody thought about Sheamus as a potential Undertaker opponent at WrestleMania? It's a possibility ... and it could be half decent.

It would explain the RAW/SmackDown discrepancy with Taker returning to the former and Barrett being on the latter, and would free Barrett up for a Corre-Nexus 4-on-4 thingy. It doesn't look like the Triple H return is happening anytime soon, and I'm not sure if two HHH-Sheamus Mania matches in a row would be a route they'd go down, so it'd give Sheamus something to do - other than a Triple H match, I can't think of anywhere other than MITB where he might fit on the card, and that'd be a bit of a step down for him - and it'd be reasonably uncomplicated to build him up as a legit threat in the weeks leading up to the show. He could even attack Undertaker on the 21st, ruin his return, and challenge him then. Play up the 'is Taker healthy' aspect, have him do the mindgames thing, and so on.

Hell, you could even have Triple H come in at Mania and take Sheamus out, giving him a big "he's back! At WrestleMania!" moment and setting up his return feud ...

Thinking about it, I wouldn't mind seeing Taker vs. Sheamus at WM at all.

    ... Just me, then?

I think that was actually one of the rumours making the rounds just before Undertaker got injured again. Having HHH take out Sheamus after Sheamus looks like cheating his way to a victory would be a pretty cool moment. In the build up you could Sheamus brag about how he took out Triple H and now he's coming for Undertaker. It'd be great for Sheamus to be involved in something with both guys.

  14. More than anything, this Wrestlemania will be about the likes of Punk, Del Rio and The Miz firmly establishing themselves as certifiable main eventers for the next five years, and I'm all for that.

You're certain of that? I only see Del Rio being someone that stays at the top, Punk goes up and down, and as for The Miz, if he is facing Superman at WM I dont see anything but a loss for him, you know send the fans home happy deal, plus he has had a great run feuding with Lawler  he's had the title for awhile now and even longer come WM, apart from the shock and awe when he won it, I dont see many people raving on about him, while Im not a total hater of the Miz, when I look at him I cant help but think of the mean street posse, rather than a guy that could actually beat the likes of TripleH, HBK, Cena etc.

Punk's being going up and down so far, but I think he's now at the point where he can get firmly established at the top of the card, and he's taking full advantage of the Nexus vehicle which is resulting in him looking like a bigger star right now than at any other point in the company, even during his previous title runs. Miz and Lawler do share a rivalry, but Miz is just as much of a dick to Orton and Cena. Miz is just a dick in general as opposed to primarily focusing on Lawler. Miz has come on leaps and bounds and I think he actually makes a very good WWE champion.

Of course SuperCena would be the favorite to win such a contest between them, John Cena is the favourite to win virtually any mach he gets put in though. Miz doesn't have to beat Cena at Wrestlemania to establish himself at the top of the card. Wrestling isn't necessarily about wins and losses, it's about how they are utilized. For me, Miz is just too hot right now to wind up slipping down the card after Wrestlemania. Each to their own and everything, but I think he's brilliant in a main event role and I'd be totally happy for the Cena/Miz rivalry to go down at Wrestlemania. I totally believe that Miz could handle himself against the likes of Cena, Orton, Edge, HHH, etc. Would he get many clean wins? Hell no! But he's heeling it up in grand fashion right now so he doesn't need to.
