I know it's a long way off but does anyone think that ROH will remain a DVD entity for the duration of its' existence or that they might make a go of it on the grand scale in regards to a national TV deal and tour the entire US one day like WWE and eventually TNA? They seem to have some big goals or plans from what i can see for the future.

Has anyone got a picture of Gauntley (and no, not a pic of a tramp in the street smoking crack), a real picture, you know, just in case i get the opportinity one day?

Tell me there weren't actually grown men crying at a wrestling show.

You make me sick you meely-mouth sonofabitch.

Just wondered if people had stopped buying the DVD's of late due to the christmas period? We haven't had any in depth reviews for ages. I'm just about to finish Unified and have the DVD's up to the end of Survival Of The Fittest to watch myself.

I can't believe there's any more points to be made in this thread or any other thread for 1PW to be honest. Obviously there's a new financial backer who's come out of nowhere to save 1PW or that's what we're supposed to think so Gauntley can put on another show and cancel it last minute before jetting off to Hawaii. I'm beyond caring. For every failed Gauntley there's another one right behind him ready to do just the same and it will just go on and on and on and nothing will ever change. There will always be mongs who will get behind these promotions destined for failure, happy to part with their cash for a bunch of old shite. It's just something we'll all have to live with i'm afraid.

It's odd. I must completely blank EWWChris's posts from memory because i really can't remember any single notable post he's made good or bad. About anything. Ever.

History!?Fuck me. I think you need to put into perspective that promotions such as NOAH, ROH and Japanese or Japanese influenced wrestling promotions in general are always responsible for the match of the years and that's not because it's the cool thing to do, it's because they are the fucking bollocks most of the time. Even a shitty NOAH undercard match shits on the best thing WWE can produce all year for the most part (certainly proven this year). This is also why a great deal of ROH matches deliver with the goods.ROH offers a style that is very likely to produce the goods often because unlike WWE or a lot of TNA, the performers go out there and put on a dramatic, realistic style, practically killing eachother (and in the case of Jacobs and Whitmer when there are together, almost kill eachother). That for me demands a little respect and thanks and in some cases a rating befitting of the match.Guys like AmDrag, Aries, McGuinness, KENTA etc don't get ****1/2 stars just because they turn up. It's because they are the cream of the crop and some of the best wrestlers on the planet. This is also why that when you see KENTA Vs Aries on the card you can automatically predict that it will be over **** (and as far as i've heard it is - it's on my next DVD)Basically if you think that any match that Trik Davis could possibly be involved with (especially a competitive squash) on the same card as a Daniels/McGuinness match deserves the same rating, you need your head checked. If those two only worked the crowd for a few minutes and exchanged some chops (and i bet they did a hell of a lot more than that in the match you reviewed) it would be better psychology and ringwork than Davis and Jacobs could produce in a limetime of matches together.

Not if they've got any taste. And i said 2-3. There is always at least 2 matches worthy of ***1/2 or more on the majority of shows. There must be very few people out there who hand out ***1/2 to over 3 matches on most ROH shows.
Completely wrong. On all accounts. You didn't read a thing i wrote really did you.Something I didn't quote but thought i'd mention is that i don't hate any style of wrestling (eg the brawls i mentioned) but there have been quite a few in the ROH/CZW feud for example and some just haven't worked. The one on the 100th Show was phenomenal though and saved an otherwise dire card.Obviously we'll have to agree to disagree although most would disagree with your star system.Just so you know this is how mine works and i can't imagine that many people differ really:***** Obvious**** 3/4**** 1/2 (Example: Do Fixer Vs Blood Gen.)**** 1/4 (AmDrag Vs Shelley/Rave/Homicide or Joe/AmDrag Vs KENTA/Marufuji)**** Very Good (Joe Vs Whitmer, Blood Embassy Vs Do Fixer, KENTA Vs Strong)*** 3/4 (Styles Vs Sydal, Dragon Kid & Horiguchi Vs Styles & Sydal) *** 1/2 (Daniels Vs Shelley, Sydal Vs Aries, Whitmer Vs Jacobs)*** 1/4 (Davey Richards Vs Jimmy Rave, McGuinness Vs Claudio)*** Above Average ("Average" being undercard dirge that you averagely see on most shows and all WWE TV shows)** 3/4------------------------------------------------Anything under this line i wouldn't watch more than once unless there was some crazy one off spot where Jack Evans almost dies or a brutal (mahoney scale) chair shot for instance** 1/2** Passable (as in nothing special whatsoever but nothing offensive)* 1/2* Dud (Pearce Vs Primeau & Franklin)I don't use anything under * because it's pointless and i don't bother trying to decide whether something is **1/4 or **1/2.Hope that helps. But you seem to be the sort of guy who rated a match on who is in it, and its length, rather than what they actually do and how entertaining it is. Even if you really enjoyed a Hagadorn/Jacobs match, and was bored by a Dragon/Aries match, I'm sure you'd rate the Dragon match higher.

How on earth do you have a competitive squash?Although i can often predict what star rating a certain match between two opponents are LIKELY to have i reserve my judgement until i see it. I didn't say that AmDrag and Nigel separately don't have less than 3 star matches, i said together. Both have had some horendous bouts on the lower card this year but have been thrilling in any match they've had against eachother.I haven't seen Cage Of Death yet but i highly doubt it will be my favourite match of the year because i generally detest brawls unless they are done spectacularly. A lot of people were creaming themselves over the Homicide/Necro match when it first happened and i was left thoroughly underwhelmed by the 8 minutes mainly involving fans throwing chairs in the ring, which had been done already in one of the poor Cabana/Homicide bouts earlier on in the year. Far from the five star "better than Ki-Necro" praise i'd heard.I'm far from a typical ROH fan because rarely is their more than two or three matches out of the 8 or 9 on each DVD that i even consider giving more than 3 and a half stars. The rest is usually filler. For example i have found most of GenNext's title defences this year tedious and repetitive as hell whereas a typical ROHmark would cream themselves stupid. Only their bouts with the Dragongate guys have been anything to shout about.

If that's your honest opinion then you my friend, are watching the wrong style of wrestling. While I'd agree that the Strong match was a bit boring his defences against Rave, Shelley, McGuiness (count out) and Homicide pissed all over his defences last year.Oh and Danielson and McGuiness one on one means exactly that. Even on a bad day. There is simply no one better at mat wrestling and that is exactly what it's all about.I only mentioned i hadn't seen it just to be trueful. The fact of the matter is, is that having been with ROH since 2002 and seen every match they've promoted, I like a few others on here i'm sure, can tell exactly what star rating a match is likely to get before they've even stepped in the ring, such is the nature of the way ROH cards are designed and the consistency of the performers. And this is coming from a guy who hasn't actually seen the match Just because it's Dragon and McGuinness doesn't mean it will be amazing. In fact, the match was unremarkable, and only the third best on the card. The entire of Dragon's title reign has been totally overrated: just because he's in a match that goes more than 20 minutes doesn't mean it's the greatest thing ever. His title reign has been mostly fun, but hasn't been that good. His two best matches with the strap were back in 2005, and since then he's been consistently good, but rarely better, and sometimes worse. The Strong 50+ minute match was boring as hell.
-
I'm pretty sure that's got to be the stupidest star rating ever. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing the match yet but it's physically impossible for those two to have anything less than at least a 3 star match together and i'm sure it's probably far better than that. You need to seriously re-evalute your star rating system.Finished watching Generation Now.Dragon/McGuinness wasn't bad at all, though I'll be expecting a lot more from the Unified match. It was fairly standard, and managed to hold my inteest without being that riveting. Could do without Dragon using stuff like the super-plex every match, and the fact that there was about 3 lariats in two minutes, but overall there isn't a lot to criticise. But don't go into it expecting a great match, it's merely decent. **1/2Overall the show exceeded my expectations a fair bit. The main event was a little disapointing, but the Briscoe/Cide match and the mad 8-Man were worth watching for.Be watching Time To Man Up next.

It's miles better than the match in January. This is the match of the year without doubt. So much so i'm giving it it's own thread.
-
I gave up trying to come to conclusions on his star ratings a long time ago. Anyone who uses less than a star to rate a match when * sufficiently describes a "dud" is of no use to me.
-
If Kamala picks Repo Man I'll mark like crazy. Have you seen any of the match or heard if it was good (as good as a Kamala match can be anyway)?
-
Does anyone have any info on that AmDrag/Kamala ROH Title match that happened last weekend??? It seemed to slip under the radar after all the initial excitement.
-
After I watched Ring Of Homicide some time ago i decided it would be a good idea to go back to the start of 2006 and rewatch everything this year so i could try to remember any of it. Unfortunately i too am having to suffer through some of the worst undercard matches in the companies history on the shows spanning Tag Wars to Unscripted II (urghh!)

Seems like as good a place as any to ask but does anyone know the name of Jimmy Yang's ROH music and from what fantastically 80's american kung fu movie it inevitably comes from???

Speaking as someone who hasn't seen any Dragon Gate shows, for me, the match was just lots of fun. I would say the high rating factor pertains to how likely it is that you would watch it again and again. I mean if I'm really bored or something i could peruse my collection and see that this would be an enjoyable way to spend 25 minutes. With so much wrestling to choose from year in year out and only so many hours in the day to get in the new stuff aswell as going back to watch old stuff from the archives from time to time this kind of match would certainly stick out. Certainly more so than one of the many 1 hour draws that ROH has promoted. I've never had the chance to watch any of the Joe/Punk matches more than once although i am working on that.Anyway, that said it isn't a 5 star+ match by any means but i certainly gave it a rating up there with Cage Of Death and McGuinness/AmDrag from Unified which brought about a three way tie for ROH match of the year for me and all three matches are completely different in their styles.
