I forgot it was going to be a musical until Ariel broke into song suddenly, I could take or leave most of the songs (except under the sea obviously which is great).

I thought that Under the Sea felt really flat compared to the animated version and why was Ariel singing along?!?!  Still not the worst version though until Shaggy's is erased.

Halle Bailey was amazing though.  Her rendition of "Part of Your World" literally (correct use of the word version) brings a tear to my eye.

I see people saying this a lot but, well, have you been to Uxbridge?

Uxbridge and Ruislip are very conservative areas. I think he could take a dump on every voters door step and still win there.

YouGov published polling showing the seat would flip (based on MRP) so it's considered vulnerable enough to be a concern, just not to Raab levels.  My firsthand local knowledge of the area is limited to the Premier Inn so I don't know how much that polling changes with a different Tory in the seat.

I wasn't sure if she quit thinking she was getting something or quit out of spite as she got nothing.

I don't know if she stood down thinking she was getting made Lady Dorries of Nether Wallop but I hope she did and that Johnson screwed her, which lets face it wouldn't have been the first time.

It's being reported that her and Alok Sharma were taken off the honours list so as not to trigger by-elections.  She's then resigned triggering a by-election anyway.

  4. Babylon

I'm sure it's just La La Land set in the switch to talking pictures era with some gratuitous nudity...

    😐

Its over 3 hours and you'll decide early on if you can stomach it (the content, not the run time).

I thought that it was a decent watch, but I can understand why it bombed financially as the intersection of people who will watch a 3 hour film about 1920s Hollywood and those that have an iron stomach probably wasn't going to cover the needed box office take.

I could do without Bacon on a Breakfast providing Sausage is included. I'll happily have both, but gun to my head it's Sausage all day.

Bacon is the true breakfast food though.  Sausage is the all-dayer that pops in to brighten up a breakfast.

Westminster politics is much more visible. I think it would help if people knew what the fuck local councillors even do.

Sometimes I feel sorry for our local councillors.  Two big issues we have locally are potholes and permitted developments where office blocks have been turned into rabbit hutch flats, which have then been rented out by other local authorities to ship people out of London.

This is all put on the shoulders of the town council by locals even though roads are the responsibility of the county council and permitted developments come from Westminster to intentionally cut out the local council from local planning decisions (for local people).

  7. It's a miserable location for an actual hotel though.  Huge main road on one side, Hollywood Studios car park on the other, with views of the maintenance entrance of Galaxy's Edge.  The outside of the building, with the exception of the arrival structure, is less attractive than an Amazon warehouse.

    Norway deserved better.

From the jury show reports she didn't nail her whistle note which could explain the lower than expected jury scores.

  9. Just watched Picard Season 3 in about a week.  I don't think I've ever seen such utterly blatant fan service.  Everything upon everything was a callback.  Sometimes we had callbacks within callbacks.  Even I probably missed some of the references because I was too busy noticing other references.  Almost unbelievably they also lifted the Death Star battle ending of Return of the Jedi.

    Absolute perfection.  10/10.  No notes.

Is her voice just not that strong, because compared to everyone else it sounded like Mae's mic was turned down...

According to the odd twitter report she sounded great in the arena, so maybe a TV mix issue, or maybe they were standing in the part of the arena where the vocal mic sounded the clearest.  I didn't notice a similar issue on TV for anyone else though.

Literally the only thing that is, and must be, live at Eurovision these days is the vocal so if you aren't a strong live singer you will struggle.

    ---

Loreen came second in her semi-final to Cha Cha Cha so The Rybak remains the only act to win multiple semi-finals.

Australia won semi-final 2, with Austria being second.

    ----

In the final televote Sweden didn't get a single 12, but they did pick up televotes from everyone except Finland.

Finland got televotes from everyone, including 12 from Sweden.

Israel received the first rest of the world televote 12.

The UK only received televotes from Ukraine (5) and Malta (4).

    ----

Italy won the composers award, which was the only thing stopping Sweden clean sweeping, as Sweden picked up the Artistic, Press, and Fan Club trophies/commemorative plaques.

  12. Could have done without a coronation two weekends in a row.  It does show what a hiding to nothing established artists with a fancied song are on though when it would have been more of a story if Loreen hadn't won.

Loreen becomes the second artist to win twice, the first woman to win twice, and the first this century.  I think she breaks the modern per-jury score by about 0.1 points per jury too.  Amazing all told, but just felt so expected.

I don't think they namechecked him, but I think "Bill Bailey" sitting next to her was Thomas G:Son who has been involved in more Eurovision tracks than even I've had hot dinners.  It's not uncommon for two countries to perform different songs of his at the same contest.

Glad Australia, Belgium, and Czechia got top 10, even if they were all closer to us points wise than to Loreen.  Felt for Austria doing so poorly in the public vote.

Pains me to say it but the UK performance was instantly forgettable.  As a pop song I liked it, but there was nothing like Sam Ryder's hyperactive bunny rabbit energy to pull me in performance wise.  I appreciate that everyone has less energy than Sam Ryder, but even still it needed more zhush.

    Wayne’s World

I dunno. Guess you had to be there? Not good.

Wayne's World must be the non-Bond or Star Wars film that I've seen the most and I've owned it on at least 4 physical formats.  However, I did first see it before my balls had dropped and we only had 4 television channels.

I doubt you're in a rush to see it, but Wayne's World 2 does have the timeless Del Preston yarn in it.

The two weakest songs in semi 1 from Azerbaijan and Latvia were the obvious ones to drop out.  The other three to go I thought could realistically have come from half a dozen.  Delighted that Moldova and my golden flute dwarf are in the big dance as well as the utterly bonkers Croatian entry.  The Irish moose knuckle was not enough to overcome the maximum insanity entries.  Felt Malta were hard done by.

Semi Final 2 Music Video Playlist

    Who the hell is Edgar?

Australia and Austria for me in this one.  Australia bring 80s rawk complete with some keytar action with a number that wouldn't look out of place on the Kung Fury soundtrack.  Austria have the ultimate earworm - POE POE POE POE POE.  Being possessed by Edgar Allen Poe who is helping you write the Eurovision winner is not a concept I've seen before.  It might not be enough to overcome the Loreen juggernaut, but it's the absolute runaway favourite here in Chez JB.  I would be devastated should Teya and Salena not make it to Saturday.

The early-mid 90s sound of Gustaph reminds me of carefree days.  For making me feel warm I hope they get through too.
