One of them's got Goldberg in it, hasn't it? How have I not seen it yet.

Goldberg is in Return, which JCVD also returned for.  II and III were retconned out of existence, as well they should have been, by The Return.  The Return itself was ignored when they started off again with Retaliation.  So if you're keeping track of this, in a six film series you have 3 films retconned out of existence.  The Return was perfectly fine, certainly infinitely better than II and III, but...

    Spoiler

JCVD/Luc became human again so it wouldn't have worked for Retaliation's story.

II and III are direct sequels of Universal Soldier.

II and III are ignored by The Return, which itself is a direct sequel of Universal Soldier.

Retaliation, and subsequently Day of Reckoning, are a new line of sequels spawning from the original Universal Soldier thereby ignoring both The Return branch and the shitty cable movie II and III branch of sequels.

Edit: II and III, if you fancy torturing yourself, are available to watch free on Plex.

Universal Soldier / Universal Soldier: Regeneration / Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

So for those of you who don't know the chronology of this series, the latter two titles are direct sequels to the first film, both made by John Hyams who recently made the excellent Alone and Sick. His dad, the also great Peter Hyams, was director of photography on them! Anyway, the first one is obviously great but these two are genuinely superb, too. Especially the last one, which is about as weird and risk-taking a DTV action sequel as I've ever seen. I expected nothing and got loads from them both.

Complete the set and "treat" yourself to Universal Soldier II and Universal Soldier III starring Burt Reynolds from the late 90s.  Straight to video sequels with none of the leading actors of the original film.  Two of the worst films I've ever had the misfortune to watch.  The budget must have been in the pounds.

Edit: Both films should have 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, but a positive review of Regeneration has been attributed to III in error.

Made by a gay woman in this instance.

Phantom Menace 25th anniversary re-release at the cinema went onsale today for the May 4th weekend.

Anyway, I really liked.  It's got a great Nic Cage central performance, an engrossing plot and is very well made. Mad to think mainstream studios were greenlighting stuff like this at such expense at the time, but I'm glad they did.

Saw this in the cinema back in the day as 90s Cage was some quality Cage.  It stayed with me to the point that I couldn't look at anything saucier than the Freeman's catalogue for a few weeks.

I think Pro Ev 3 is the pinnacle (Collina on the cover!) but by the time we were playing on the PS2, with tournaments every Friday night. Great days.

Pro Evo 3 took 3 long years to come out from the PS2's release so for a fair while the PS1 release of Pro Evo 2 was the best football game on the PS2.

Honestly, who the fuck is paying for this?

I probably would pay £25-30 at a theatre type venue.  When it said O2 on the poster I assumed it was the Indigo as a lot of acts will bill that as "playing the O2" but it is actually in the main arena with floor seats at £90.  You're not Beyonce lads.

  8. I took my old dad to see a Rolling Stones tribute act who sounded really good.  During the interval they changed outfits to illustrate the passage of time.  "Mick" came out in a jumpsuit which appeared to have a Sunday roast sized chicken, complete with giblets, down the front.  It was needlessly distracting.

  9. I once really enjoyed his music, and whilst I wouldn't wish it on anyone I can't pretend that I wasn't a fully paid up member of Friends United in Truth and Kindness.

TIL Graham Souness was Dale Winton’s best man at his wedding.

Apparently they were really good mates, but that was a bit for a show rather than a real wedding.  I can't remember if Graeme Souness was in on it though or if he thought Dale Winton really was marrying Nell McAndrew.

I liked Jayston in the original Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - he had one of those really distinctive, solid, stern British voices

He was the voice of every John LeCarre audiobook I've listened to.  The perfect narrator for a Cold War thriller.

That just highlights how much waste and idiocy there is in local government.

A video message from Carole Baskin is council tax well spent.
