  1. You'll need to educate and enlighten us, as my opinion is exactly what you posted in your opening paragraph. Mitchell was in the Twin Galaxies clique so could get away with stuff that Wiebe (the outsider) couldn't, and the clique needed little excuse to try and discredit Wiebe's achievements.

Huge props to those who pimped this doc also.

I read some interviews with Billy, and read a bit more about his previous achievements in gaming, and saw that he ran a successful business, and I found that I respected what he had done. Also, he's just such a brilliant heel it's impossible not to be entertained by him when you've got a little emotional distance from having watched the documentary, and he introduces some seeds of plausible doubt as to its portrayal of him.

With Steve I saw this guy doggedly chasing this dream to the detriment of his family life and the more I thought about it the more it just seemed like his perspective was a bit out of whack and it was just sad. And I was just thinking 'let it go, man'.

I've still got nothing but contempt for the Billy Mitchell sycophants; Walter and the killscreen nerd.

King of Kong is a fantastic doc - I will say that I feel bad for Walter Day, he doesn't really want to be doing the Twin Galaxies thing anymore, but Billy Mitchell is kind of his bread and butter. Seemed like a really nice guy when I spoke to him (Day, not Mitchell - I'd have a connery if I spoke to Billy Mitchell).

  2. Absolutely love "seeking a friend for the end of the world"

One of the best films I've seen this year. The comedy worked for me, the drama as well and hell it gets quite emotional too. Good job i was the only one in the screening then :(

quite nice having the whole thing to myself to be honest

Really want to see that, no bugger is interested in seeing it though :(

So either you're seeking a friend for seeking a friend for the end of the world, or I've pointed out the joke that you made rather well.

  3. I can't get past Moore - he's a twat. I enjoyed his work as a young 'un, but going back to it in the reassessment of him being a twat, I don't enjoy most of it. I can still get along with Captain Britain, and his Green Lantern stuff, and V for Vendetta is wondrous, but most of the rest of his work is tricksy, self-loving bollocks.

  4. See, Gladders, it's not just me that prefers the original cut of Aliens. But, hey, what do I know about the franchise!

Mike is right, I'd have left in the bit about Ripley's daughter, and removed the rest. As much as I love the turret guns, they slow down the film at that stage too much.

EDIT: I get that people don't like Blade Runner. They're wrong, but I kind of understand that it's essentially film porn. If what you want from a movie is a talking donkey, some big explosions or a Burger King tie-in, Blade Runner is going to leave you somewhat underwhelmed.

I forgot to mention, Steve - they will say that you don't get it, and then make very much unveiled suggestions that this is because you're a level below them in cinematic appreciation.

  5. Cheers Rosey. I was scared to reply, but now I've got some back up. Be prepared for this to go the same way as the 'Toilet' thread though.

You need to stand up to them Steve. They'll demand that your thoughts be considered "aberrant" (well, Gladstone might, Loki'll put it in simpler terms), and that there should be a separate thread for the likes of you and I. Sure, they'll come at you with "but he shits all wrong, let's not listen to him", but you have to stand firm. I shit like a normal person, and I don't like Bladerunner - I'm where all the venns come together - shits normally, great taste in everything, hates Bladerunner.

  6. Have you ever seen Yeux Sans Visage, Richie (or Pat)? Terrifying, beautiful movie.

Is that the one that's a bit like the recent Antonio Banderas' film, who's name I forget? in so much that some lass is surgically rebuilt by a surgeon, after his daughter or something dies to look like her. I dont think Ive seen it. but have heard about it, it may even been in this month's Empire, truth be told

    The Almod

  7. But now it's on for real -- the 43-year-old powerhouse signed with the CES MMA league -- and is all set up to fight on October 6 at the Duncan Doughnuts Theater in Providence, Rhode Island.

That's be an awesome name for a squash-guy wrestler.

He could team with Ken-tucky Fried Chicken.

    Don't run away!

In other news, totally unrelated to the two above posts, WWE have just signed season veteran and highly rated womens wrestler Sara Del Rey:

Oooo, let's all have a wank, lads.

So, she's going to play Kelly Kelly's ugly mate who Kelly tries to set up with some lad so they can double date?

  8. There's a nice (although slightly inauthentic) place just off of Oxford Street that does deli food. I miss the Nosherie in Farringdon - 24 hour kosher place. Also, there is a petition to save Gaby's on Charing Cross Road, it's probably going to be a victim of the rape of that area.

Yeah, corned beef is salt beef. It's named for the "corns" of salt.

Sephardic food is much more spiced, less bland and comfort foodie than East European. Basically, it's every else, so it could be Indian, Ethopian, or anything really. One of my favorite things is the couscous, but that's more just kosher north African.

  9. Ah, thanks for the thought, but no need to bother yourself with that - very kind of you though.

I'm in holborn every few weeks with work, I could open my own pie stall when I'm down.

There's a cracking pie show around there, actually - I don't remember the name something like the square pie?

Carbomb (and other Londoners), ever make it to Manze's in Chapel Market? Pies aren't that good, peas and eels are better. They're in Peckham and somewhere like Tower or London Bridge, too.

  10. I knew a good amount about Jewish food, long before I moved. Cynthia Roden's The Book of Jewish Food is waaaay slanted toward sephardic food (but then, that's her background), although there are lots of nice ashkenazi recipes too, and that's what most people know as Jewish food.

There are mountains of jewish places here - I think that's the reason that sandwiches in general kick the arse off of the shite back home. My favorite treat is to order in some (non-kosher) stuff from Sarge's and fill my belly - last time, I had their combination tongue/corned beef/brisket sanger, "souper" chicken soup (with matzo balls and kreplach), and a deli wellington, which is a mix of potato, onion, and corned beef (the yank kind) - all topped off with a celery soda.
