  1. Celebrity passings rarely bother me, but Hill’s is a proper gut-punch.

Boys From The Blackstuff is the most important TV show of my life, effectively getting me into politics a decade or so after it was first broadcast.

The character of Yosser Hughes, as funny as it was in parts, wasn’t far removed from many of my old man’s mates in the Eighties. Not the physical side, but the desperation side. He was the epitome of dozens of his mates, wanting to work but not getting a start, so doing what they had to, to put bread on the table. His mental decline was a valid depiction of what that long dead cunt did to workers in our city, and many others.

Weirdly enough - and this isn’t an ‘I watched No Way Out 2004 the night before Eddie Guerrero snuffed it’ - I went to watch an adaptation of Boys From The Blackstuff with my old man last night.

It brought the show back to me but more importantly and emotionally, it brought the 1980s back to my Dad. He was absolutely engrossed throughout and both at the interval and the end, he referenced many of his mates who were in his head throughout. It’s on for a week but I’d imagine tonight’s performance was more emotional than the cast could ever have expected.

Bernard Hill was, of course, more than just Yosser Hughes. He was brilliant in everything he did. But the impact that one role had on me and no doubt countless others, wanting to understand the desperation (Dan) of the working class in that era, is something I’ll forever feel.

  2. 1. Nationalise rail and all basic utilities and services

    2. Ban people talking on speakerphone in public

    3. Fry-up lessons to be mandatory in schools from the age of six

    4. Spurs fans to be allowed one hour of internet a month

    5. Free George Jackson

  3. Lee Mavers used to babysit me, not long before the Las made it big. Superb songwriter and musician, but he couldn’t keep away from the other gear.

John Power took over with Cast and knocked out one brilliant album, one okay album and then it fell as flat as a witch’s tit.

Last saw him in The Grapes with a tent on his back looking like he’d been run over by a tractor.

Two very talented blokes, and the Las debut/only album is pivotal in British music. Sound if you don’t like Britpop, but their influence is undeniable.

And yes, that apostrophe bothers me.

  4. Wotcha. Sorry for the delay in getting the results up; got a bit of a legal issue with a custumer that’s consumed things over the last couple of weeks. I’ll get everything finished up and posted as soon as possible.

So the good news, now I’ve seen the story finish and lost my £18.75, this is where my story ends. I’m not tuning into Raw or Smackdown. I may check out stuff down the road, but this sugar coating is too sickly for me. It’s been a rollercoaster of the last 34 years, but I’m ready to hop off WWE. Good luck in your future endeavours.

Sami does generally get a good reaction, but saw a clip of R Truth/Miz and HHH and that crowd was silent (I mean, the comedy didn’t seem to land particularly well, maybe the just weren’t into THAT bit). But his reaction was awesome last night which is always good because he’s another one I think deserves it. And the general presentation is so much better out of Kevin Dunn’s hands

A one-album wonder, but the artwork is as lovely as their work.

Mad weirdo Graham Coxon has a self-portrait on the front of Blur’s best album.

I mean, come on. Iconic and in keeping with the album.

Two Feet is probably the most intriguing artist about today, and this album cover reflects that.

  7. Pulling the census form down on Sunday at about 8pm*, so this is a last shout for anyone who hasn’t submitted and wants to.

*If Palace somehow turn Liverpool over it’ll be at about 4am on Wednesday.

Just to clarify, I think she over reacts, because she does. But that’s clearly what they want. And because I think she’s dreadful (and a few others) doesn’t matter cos it’s just a fucking preference. Glad if you agree, glad if you disagree, it’s all opinions.

The main takeaway from Mania 40 is Cody, whether you like him as a wrestler or not, got to live out his childhood dream and as he’s the nicest man in wrestling, deserves it.

Good job you won’t have to worry about any of this bothering you again, knowing you’ve stopped watching it.

  9. If she was genuinely emotional, good on her for being so invested in her job, her passion.

If she wasn’t, well, she’s done a very good job in pretending she was and winding a load of people up.

We’ve just had the best main event in a decade; I’m more invested in watching every nuance of that wonderful main event than whether a ring announcer pleases me.

  10. Oh! I forgot. After the chokeslam and the lights coming back on, the unintentional placement of Rock’s belt couldn’t have been better.

I ran it back to see if it’d been adjusted by someone for the aesthetic, but no. It fell this way and made the visual so bloody good.

  11. I too was hoping for the glass to shatter so we’d get one more Rock/Austin face-off and the former doing one big last stupid oversell to a stunner. When the gong hit, I was a bit deflated thinking that, after all the build, the Final Boss should never be taken out by someone so much older than him.

I looked it up and Steve Austin is older than ‘Taker. Wrestling, hey?

Absolutely brilliant show, all-in-all. Randy barking at that YouTube berk had me in tucks, Logan Paul should have done this years ago and the whole Drew/Punk thing is going to make for a wonderful feud. Fair play to Becky for going hard after being so unwell, but that outfit with a paragraph on it was horrendous. I assume hers and her fella’s costume designer is David Blunkett.

Good for Cody, too. I’d never bought into him until the lead-up to this show and that third slap of the mat made me realise how much he’s won me over. Proper, gorgeous, emotional wrestling and when this industry gets it right, it can’t be touched.

Also, if it hadn’t been for the main main, Sami Zayn would have been involved in the best match of Mania for three years on the bounce.
