  1. Has anyone got any opinion on Dr Death Steve William's book? It sounds like it's got a bit of his God stuff in it, which I'm not that interested in, but does it cover his career with any insight at the same time? I am a big fan of late 80s early 90s Crockett/WCW and 90s AJPW too, so could be worth a read.

  2. I wished I had saw that unexpectedly. Would've been an awesome spot, especially in the context of a Benoit/Lyger match.

Got me thinking about dives from the top to the floor. There can't have been too many of them in the US big leagues. Fatu inexplicably done it in a meaningless squash. Psicosis onto Rey Jr too at BATB96. Chris Daniels from a springboard in that spotfest with Modest on Nitro. Then there was Pierre Oullett with his cannonball once in TNA. And more recently, Jeff with the swanton onto Angle.

There must be a few other examples, especially from all those x-division nutters over the years.

Dynamite Kid did a diving headbutt off the top to the floor on Keith Hart back in the early 80s. That's most likely what inspired Benoit to try the same thing a decade later.

    It's at about 4mins 30secs in

    video.
  3. Back in about 1995 when Eurosport used to show NJPW wrestling, I remember watching a Pegasus Kid/Chris Benoit match and distinctly remember Benoit doing his diving headbutt off the top rope to the floor. A friend of mine swears something this stupid would never have happened and that it must have come to me in a dream.

Anyway, while I can picture the whole situation now, I can't for the life of me remember who Benoit's opponent was. Does anyone else remember this happening and even better, know if the match in question is on YouTube?

Pegasus Kid vs. Liger - no date

It looks like they faced each other around 6 times between 1990 & 1993 in Japan. This match was in Tokyo Ryogoku, which narrows it down a bit.

Thanks for trying - I'll track it down eventually. The picture proves it happened though. It also proves Benoit was never quite the full shilling.

It definately happened as I remember it myself (and had it on video at one point, but taped over it). Benoit's opponent was Jushin Liger, but I have no idea of the date of the match.

It was defo Benoit vs Liger, I also had it on tape on a Best of NJPW on Eurosport comp a few years back. Pretty sure it was from 1993. I had a look on Youtube but can't find that particular match.

Oh well! At least someone else remembers and it's not me going mad.

  6. All media however independent it seems generally has an agenda. If you like your news with a right wing slant, read the Daily Telegraph, if you are more of a liberal then read the Guardian, if you like boobs, then get the Sun and so on. Although they all report basically the same stories, they can be reported in a very different way. Editorial pieces meanwhile in all newspapers can be extremely baised towards the paper's political leaning.

Wrestling press is undoubtably the same. It is easy to see biases in both FSM and Powerslam (and Wrestling Observer or The Torch or whatever you read for that matter). As with any media the best thing to do is to take any written opinion with a pinch of salt, and try to form your own.

  7. I finally got round to downloading the last issue to my IPad last week and have to say it is much better than I remember it being the last time I bought the magazine a few years back. I particularly enjoyed the somewhat historical articles about the Hall of Fame and Bad News Brown as well as the very interesting piece about whether it is the fans which dictate what the promotions do or vice versa.

I did notice the standard of writing has improved (in that it seems less like it's written by a teenager) althought there were still some little mistakes here and there. The photography presented in the magazine is also of a much higher standard than it was previously.

The upcoming changes seem very positive and I will download this month's magazine later in the week.

Keep up the good work Brian. FSM is still far from the perfect wrestling magazine, but it has improved greatly and you obviously seem dedicated to making it as good as it can be.

  8. I've not read FSM for a few years but I've thought of getting the mag through their iPad app. Does anyone know what the quality would be like and also, can I just get it one copy at a time or do I have to subscribe for a set time?

  9. Really enjoyed the first six episodes I have seen of ROH tv.

I agree. I've never really watched ROH before now, just read the odd thing here and there and I've really enjoyed it. I think of it as a modern take on old school wrestling, with all the time limit draws and stuff. It's turned into the type of wrestling I like.

  10.

Not a classic match, but I thought it was noteworthy that in 2011 at the age of 46 he is still doing his trademark spots, the highlight being a Triple Jump Moonsault at the 7 minute mark.

I cant remember the last time he did one of those.

Sabu definately deserves a lot of respect. I certainly know when I first saw Sabu wrestling in 1995, I'd not have put much money on him being able to walk 16 years later let alone be able to do pretty much all the same stuff. Consider this - he is the same age (but born the year before) both Mick Foley and Shawn Michaels.

  11. I still like Powerslam overall, and I've bought almost every issue since 1994.

I can see why people get fed up of Fin Martin bashing John Cena and WWE creative continually. Most of the critisism is valid but it does feel like he's picking on every little thing. I guess that is a problem of having a magazine which is written almost exclusively by one man, only a single viewpoint is put forward. He did make it very clear, however, that he enjoyed both WWE's TLC and TNA's Destination X shows, so it's definately not all negative. I also am really bored of the three part (extremely long-winded) tribute to Edge. I always thought Edge was alright at best and just simply did not deserve such a volume of content devoted to him, but I guess I'm just one guy. It's more space than was devoted to Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair and Steve Austin combined when they retired (I know Flair came back, but it was a big deal at the time). Other things I dislike are the fact that the magazine is so short and the way it appears to have reduced coverage of Japanese and independent wrestling over the years. I wish they would cover ROH in the detail they used to with ECW back in its day. I would also like them to cover British wrestling in some way. A big problem with British wrestling is that it doesn't attract the audiences it could because few people are familiar with the characters and stories. I guess Fin Martin won't cover it because he doesn't think there is a market for it (which there isn't because so few people are familair). It's a vicious circle. Incidentally, I know FSM do cover British wrestling but I just can't bring myself to enjoy that magazine and I don't even know I can put my finger on why.

    What I like about powerslam:

    - The photography is usually top-notch. There are a few in this month from NOAH and TNA which are just breathtaking.

    - The historical articles, like the ones they did a few years back about the history of the blade are usually an excellent read. These articles are often accompanied by some great photographs that really take me back. It is such a shame most of the historical articles take the form of obituries. I wish they would do a historical article every few months for the sake of it, not just because someone died. I would love to read about Dusty Rhodes' control of JCP in the mid 80s, the history of steroids in wrestling, a look at old TV jobbers or whatever, all acompanied with some nice photos from the time. Just a double page every month or other month would be a nice addition.

    - the layout. It is a very easy magazine to read, as a long-time reader, I know where to turn for what.

It is a long way from perfect, but Fin seems to have hit on a format that sells well enough to make him some money and deserves credit for keeping it going for so long. When I started buying it, Superstars of Wrestling shared the shelves with WWF magazine, WCW magazine, Pro Wrestling Illustrated, Inside Wrestling, The Wrestler, Ringside Wrestling and other titles I've forgotten about. The fact that WWF magazine and Powerslam are the only wrestling magazines that appear regularly on most shelves is quite impressive.

  12. Was just wondering if anyone knows what became of Michael Shane? He was a big part of ROH and TNA in their early days, and while he was a bit spotty, did appear to have potential. I figured being a relation of Shawn Michaels would at least get him a decent break.

  13. In his shoot interview, Ric Flair mentions how he found Rick Rude to be unprofessional and was "the only guy" he ever worked with in an "impiared" state. I find this rather unlikely given that Flair wrestled many matches with wrestlers of questionable reputations such as Terry Gordy, all the Von Erichs, Buzz Sawyer and RoadWarrior Hawk among others, also, other than Rude allegedly being angry about Bobby Heenan stealing his heat, I've never heard anyone with anything but good things to say about Rude.

I'm guessing Flair has some other beef with Rude which wasn't mentioned. Has anyone got any ideas?

  14. Has anyone ever performed a piledriver off the top rope? I'm sure it was a move available in a wrestling game I played back in the late 80s, but I'm assuming it's way too dangerous in real life.

Other than the middle rope tombstones mentioned by Benoit and Credible and Rhyno's middle rope piledriver against Kid Kash (he did it against Jeff Hardy in TNA during Jeff's first run there too), I also recall that Roaddog defeated the 123 Kid using a middle rope piledriver at IYH 2 back in 1995 (see

)and Eric Embry was doing a middle rope piledriver in Memphis in the 80s (see
it looks nasty). I've also seen similar moves performed by Chris Kanyon, Chris Hamrick and CZW's Nick 'Bank Robber' Gage. I also remember The Carnage Crew doing a spike piledriver off a cage through a stack of tables on an early ROH show which was on the Wrestling Channel back in the day, but I can't find a clip of it.

It's all very dangerous anyway and not advisable I shouldn't think. Looks awesome when done right all the same!

  15. This is what was said in December, and nothing has been reported since, so I'd imagine we can put that promotion to bed:

The Worldwide Wrestling Promotions upstart in Florida looks to be dead even before it got started. None of the wrestlers or even those in management capacities that were set to work with the project have had any communication in months with those organizing the promotion.

    Fair enough.

  16. Back last summer, there were fairly strong rumours going around of a new major promotion which was going to be set up in Florida before the end of the year. One of the names mentioned was Vader and I believe Chris Jericho's name was put with it as well. The whole thing seemed completely unrealistic and sure enough it has never come to pass.

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about what was going on there? Who was behind it? What was the original plan? Have plans been completely shelved and if so, how far did they get before they were?

  17. Here's one for the kids:-

    from TWA in 1991.

Good find. I remember seeing photographs of this match in a magazine sometime in late 91.

Speaking of TWA, I've always looked for the Cactus Jack vs Eddie Gilbert matches on You Tube but never spotted them - anyone know if they are around?

  18. A loose link but didn't think this was worthy enough of it's own thread.

I don't suppose anyone has a YouTube (or otherwise) clip of the You Bet! episode which had the kid on doing the wrestling challenge where he identified the matches from a tiny snippet of commentary / footage. As a reward and surprise the Bulldog appeared at the end and the look on the boys face was absolutely magical. I wouldn't mind seeing that again.

I don't have the clip but I do remember watching this. One he identified was a Natural Disasters match which was finished by Earthquake's sit down splash. I remember the laugh from the audience and Matthew Kelly when he explained that this meant he "sat on him".

  19. I've seen the Gene Okerlund one on PWT, is it worth a watch?

I quite enjoyed it, he's so enthusiastic and tells some fun stories. Although I can never decide quite whether I think Gene is an utter legend or a name-dropping pain in the neck.

  20. A new person has started at work today called Chris Cruise. I swear I remember that name from wrestling, but where??

He was a commentator who popped up on the WCW syndicated shows in the early 1990s. He also commentated on the AAA "When Worlds Collide" PPV with Mike Tenay I think.

    Edit: As above.
