  1. Does anybody know if there is actually a 'safe' way to do the double foot stomp because somebody jumping from the top rope on top of you just seems like the craziest idea ever, despite it being such an indy staple these days. I've seen a lot of guys land on the shoulder/arm area but even that seems like it's asking for trouble

I've often wondered that too. Incidentally, I've noticed Sonjay Dutt doing his moonsault double-stomp on TNA lately. It seems such a reckless thing to do.

  2. If anyone was in any doubt about leather jackets, sunglasses and beards making you cool, check this shit out. Cracking picture.

    1978ys.jpg

Has Hogan got a chair to stand on here to look a good three or four inches taller than Nash and make Scott Hall look like a dwarf? As cool as he looks, it's a bit pointless to have a massive guy like Hall look so small.

  3. 3. I watched the Kevin Steen vs El Genericho ladder match from a few months back and just can't see anything at all in Kevin Steen. I just think he looks like a tubby teenager pretending to be a wrestler.

I bet there's loads of wrestlers in WWE and TNA who wish they could cut a promo like him, though. I really like the bloke. Cracking wrestler as well. I hope TNA or WWE snaps him up. WWE wont with those tits, but TNA has Samoa Joe on the roster. Let them eat cake, I say.

Mind you, Bray Wyatt was a tubby sod. Still Steen in developmental for a year (which they normally do anyway), and they'd make something out of him for sure.

You're right actually - I was a bit harsh. His promos are particularly good - and if I listened to him with my eyes closed I'd be quite into him. It's just I can't take him seriously the way he looks, with his double chins, bum-fluff beard and crap gear. Maybe this says much more about me than Steen though - I'm just a shallow fan!

  4. There's a few things I've noticed lately that I have to get off my chest (but I don't post often enough so it's all coming in one go).

    1. Been watching a lot of 1989/1990 WCW lately and Ron Simmons took some really dangerous bumps for Scott Steiner. In just about every match they had, Scott dumps big Ron on his head with a German Suplex. I wouldn't have thought at the size he was back then, Simmons would have been too keen to take that sort of a fall.

    2. Linked to the first thought, Scott Steiner was simply amazing at this stage in his career. Lately in the matches I've been watching, I've seen him do his back-flip Blockbuster slam on both of Doom and Sid Vicious, and to this day, I've never seen anyone do the Frankensteiner better. I also saw him do a sort of MMA roll-through leg lock onto Hawk, who looks absolutely terrified (possibly for good reason - but it's strange to see that expression on Hawk's face).

    3. I watched the Kevin Steen vs El Genericho ladder match from a few months back and just can't see anything at all in Kevin Steen. I just think he looks like a tubby teenager pretending to be a wrestler.

    4. Chris Jericho looks really silly these days, what with his concave chest and daft tattoos. Surely he must be embarrassed by the state that his body looks?

  5. I've been at my parents' house, and found an old box up in the loft:

    MY OLD WWF HASBROS!!

    MY OLD WCW FIGURES!!

    dsc04202zc.jpg

You'll see the cage from the old WCW ring was in the box, but sadly the ring itself wasn't. I wasn't able to find my red, white and blue WWF ring either. I suppose I know have a good excuse to have to go and visit again.

Note the paint jobs my brother did on Undertaker (purple gloves) and WCW Lex Luger (stars and stripes) to keep them current!!

I loved these figures. One thing though, Ron Simmons was probably my favourite in the early 90s WCW on ITV days and I hated how his figure was wearing trainers and was stuck in that silly pose.

  6. The U.S title match wasnt it?

Awesome match, infact awesome show all round

NWA/WCW from 88/92 gets me moist

Does it for me too. I've got a full set of PPVs and Clash of the Champions from 1987 through to 1994 when Hogan arrived, which I am very slowly working my way through, in chronological order while reading the Wrestling Observers from the time. It makes for fascinating viewing. Some of the wrestling is superb.

  7. Luger was fucking GREAT during that period. I don't see where all this "Luger is shite" bullshit comes from, when 1988-1991 proves otherwise.

You know what else is a great fun match? Him vs Dan Spivey from Wrestle War '91. Check it out.

Yes! You are absolutely right - another really good Luger match. Both of them wrestled like they had something to prove, and the finish was pretty clever too. While we are talking about that match, Nikita Kolloff looks amazing in his white suit during the post match angle.

  8. I just re-watched the Great American Bash from 1989 and had to mention how good Lex Luger was in his match with Ricky Steamboat. I know The Dragon has a reputation for making guys look great, but this wasn't a total carry job. Luger wrestled very smoothly, was always in the right place at the right time and had some great heel mannerisms. Compare that with many of the Luger-sized guys of today and he seemed every bit the Total Package. It's a shame he seemed to lose the motivation during his WCW title run a few years later.

Good for him. Definately doesn't look two decades older than when I last saw him in his few-week long WCW return in 1992. I'm guessing he's pushing 60 now. He also looks to have aged more gracefully than Simmons, which is surprising when you consider Simmons looked significantly better in their Doom days.

  10. Anyone know what those great compilation clip videos are called? They're like Botchamania. Im sure there's hundreds of episodes

    Thanks

    ah you mean Art0Donnell2 ?

    Here's a classic

    Vince sings Mustang Sally

    Raw goes green(-screened)

There used to be a series of videos called Random Goodness which were awesome. Each always featured a clip of Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan being great together and a mixture of classic and ultra-modern wrestling clips set to music. They were really professionally produced too. Unfortunately they disappeared, which was such a shame.

  11. Here's a story and it even appeared in Flair's book.According to Wrestling Observer editor Dave Meltzer, Kerry had been emotionally distraught because his dog had died earlier that day; he could not be located at match time until Gary Hart and referee Rick Hazzard finally found him passed out in his car. When Kerry was brought to the ring for his match with Flair after a considerable delay, the one-hour draw that followed was such a disaster that, in one of the few taped inserts not related to the death of a wrestler, Marc Lowrance appeared from the KTVT studios to assure Championship Sports viewers that Kerry's condition the previous Monday evening had been due to a "106-degree fever" and that he had "left the hospital" to fulfill his obligation to wrestle for the title. (Only the opening minutes of the match were shown before TV time ran out, but what little footage did air made it quite obvious that Kerry was not in any shape to go through with the bout.)

Yes, I remember this story now. Just makes me wonder more why Flair would single Rude out so negatively.
  12. Watched the Ric Flair shoot lately and he states in it that Rick Rude was the only wrestler who worked with him while 'impaired'. Surely this cannot be true considering Flair worked with The Von Erichs, Terry Gordy, Tommy Rich, Scott Hall, Buzz Sawyer and numerous other wrestlers with reputations over the years. Also, this is really the only negative comment I've heard about Rick Rude ever.I guess their series happened just after Rude returned from his neck injury in 1993 and was clearly in pain when he wrestled, so perhaps he was on some serious pain killers at the time. Even with this in mind, I simply cannot believe that he was the only person to wrestle Flair when under the influence of something. My question is, why did Flair make this statement to single out Rude? Is there some other reason that he disliked him?

  13. Look at this idiot:

    ibuo39L9EHzhGC.gif

That looks nutty, but its actually pretty well done by them considering what they are doing. It doesn't look safe, but it doesnt look like either would be that hurt either. If the tables were closer to the crowd, and the crowd were a bit further away from the ring, it wouldnt look much worse to what the big E were doing in the late 90s. It looks worse then it is because Ruckus is going in blind. Still fucking barmy though. I appreciate A LOT could go wrong, but like someone else said there were other crazy things in this match (Jack Evans anyone?). And this was at the peak of CZW's popularity IMO.

I have to disagree. If you look, Sabian is barely slowed by the table and the back of his head smacks off the concrete. A fall from that height hitting the back of his head on concrete could easily have killed him or left him with a serious head injury. He is a lucky guy.

  14. The thing is, that actually sounds like an angle I'd eat up if I'd been there. Sounds brilliant.

I agree. They don't want Lethal to go over or look inferior to Steen so fundamentally this is a sound idea to me. Steen as the heel thinks he's going to lose so instead causes all hell to break loose by spitting on the face's mother in the front row. This should lead to more heat on Steen as a heel and give Lethal even more reason to want to kick ass next time around. Only problem is the heat ended up on ROH rather than Steen because their fans think they are too good for keyfabe.

I bet if Shane Douglas had spat on Sandman's mum back in 1996 ECW this angle would have worked perfectly.

  15. Yeah that sports psychology article was awful. It seemed like it had been knocked up in half an hour and barely had anything to do with wrestling.

I don't know how bad it was as I only read the first paragraph and then skimmed a few lines here and there, realised it was all football and left it at that. The good thing is though, that unlike PowerSlam, it is long enough that one or two crappy articles and you don't feel cheated.

  16. That looks like another really good issue. FSM has really turned a corner for me as I've enjoyed the last few issues hugely. The Bruno Sammartino article and the story behind the Wembly SummerSlam last month were both particularly insightful. Keep it up!

  17. Indeed it would be a shame to see the end of this extremely interestling thread. I am a little curious about how 'belt politics' works however. It doesn't seem unforgivable to be known to have written some interesting historical pieces containing no personal information in the at all, and most of which is apparently in the public domain anyway, if we were to look long and hard enough to research for ourself. What crimes, exactly are you perceived to have committed and is the 'belt world' really that petty? It's not like you posted a picture of Reggie Parks playing billiards naked or anything.
