  1. Japan sounds good as we would get the return of horsemeat Overeem. Him against a juiced up Cro Cop sounds good.Β

I think the sad truth is that a show with a main event with a 'name' like Lawler makes no difference as to how much the UFC make, so they may as well have a cheaper fighter and make a few extra hundred thousand dollars per show.Β

Thats what i am saying whatΒ i hope this one will be .

That it will show how good a wrestler was and how big a cunt he was.

    Β

    Β

Why do you hope that, may I ask? Purely in terms of an interesting documentary, a minute spent talking about how great his Tiger Mask/Bulldogs matches were is a minute taken away from the actual interesting stuff that we all watch these documentaries for. Youre implying you want a significant (but admittedly not equal) amount of time spent on how good of a wrestler he was, which not only misses the point of what these shows are about, but quite frankly would be boring to watch.

  3. That gif Wand has posted of the Lewis uppercut is a thing of beauty. Look at the wind-up of the uppercut. Timed to perfection. Those two ground strikes were disgusting too, reminded me of the Lewis KO against Travis Browne. You could hear the Blaydes corner saying "You knew he was done" to Lewis and then Lewis replying "Thats Herb Dean's fault" πŸ˜„. Dont think there was anything wrong with those punches myself either. Blaydes was deep in on a single leg at the start of R2 and couldnt finish it, which I think made him panic and led to the desperate shoot which led to the finish. Impressive take down defence gave Lewis the opening to land that strike.

Had this result spoiled for me too, as the BBC Sport app had the result fairly high up in the headlines. Dont think Ive ever seen a random Fight Night result with two fairly unknown people make the front page of the app before.

Minner/Rosa was a very good scrap too. Plenty of great ground transitions in it.

  4. Very enjoyable PPV, I thought. Pitolo/Marquez was a great opener, the middle three bouts were all good scraps, and the main event delivered.

Usman was fantastic. To be fair, he was almost Overeem-esque any time Burns hit him in the first round, which goes to show you the power Burns had. Has to be considered a massive strategic mistake by Burns (and his corner) to decide to lay on his back and allow Usman 2 full minutes to recover after rocking Usman badly in the first minute. There was no attempt to even try and stand up. Who knows how the fight would have gone had he done so, as even after two minutes of recovery, Usman looked super vulnerable any time Burns hit him toward the end of the round. Wittman's strategy and cornering was top notch again, and led to the win.

What was up with the new camera style they were using before and after the fights? It was like watching a film at times.Β

Seems like theyve jumped onto the 8k Camera bangwagon that everyone else is doing these days. Did anyone here think they added something to the show, in a good way? I think, same as what it did with WWE, it looks awful. Maybe I need a 4K TV and stream to really see the benefits, but as it is, I think its distractingly bad, with the constant in and out of focus that it does. Just doesnt look real and adds nothing.

The Rock v Triple H at Summerslam 98.

    Β

I think that match confirmed to the WWF higher-ups that they had two main event level wrestlers on their hands. Two people who could enter the main event picture over the next few months to a year. Taker and Foley had done ok to fill the void left by Bret and HBK. They both, along with Kane, gave Austin obstacles to overcome while the WWF found their next top stars. And within 12 months of their ladder match at SummerSlam, both Rock and Triple H had challenged for the WWF Title. (the ppv before SummerSlam 99, saw them face off against each other to determine the number one contender for the WWF Title)

    Β

If the match at 98 is a flop who knows where the WWF goes from there. Rocky might not conquer Hollywood and Vince might tell his future son-in-law, family or not mate you're just not good enough to main event.Β

Have to disagree. This match didnt change both guys careers, let alone wrestling. Doesnt belong anywhere near most of the other matches here in terms of significance. Rock and Triple H were the leaders of the two biggest stables in the company, and were already both super over upper mid carders, when that was still a significant thing. The fact they were booked as the semi main on the second biggest show of the year in MSG in a ladder match shows you they were already very well thought of. They were both getting main event pushes eventually, it was obvious at this time. This is just a good ladder match.

  6. From what I remember, wasnt it a case of Snyder having a rough cut of the movie done, then the execs shit their pants when they watched it and ordered Whedon to completley redo it. Whedon essentially filmed a new film with the reshoots he did, therefore what is coming out next month isnt a bunch of new reshoots or new scenes, but pretty much the original film he intended with actually finished CGI and edits. Think thats the story.

I actually watched Justice League the other night. If the main plot of the new one is still 'villan we have never seen before needs to find three boxes for the destruction of the world', nothing he can do can make that any good.

  7. Yeah I think youre right that thats the angle they are going down, but there didnt seem to be any evidence of that during the DC trilogy did it? Just had a gander at Stipe's wiki page, and hes only 38, which for a heavyweight isnt that old. The heavy and light-heavy divisions seem to be more forgiving about a fighters age. Also checking his wiki, and in the last five years hes had 8 fights, 4 of which he finished in the first round. One KO loss and three fairly standard fights (not wars), and you think he should be in pretty good nick physically.

  8. Have we learnt anything new about Ngannou since his last title match? On the run up to the first match, he was KOing people within seconds. On the run up to this match, and excluding the Black Beast match, hes been KOing people in seconds. Watching him swinging like a maniac against Rozenstruik, or catching Cain with a shot hasnt taught us anything new about his game. The gameplan for Stipe is identical to the first time, and we have seen nothing in the interim to say that Ngannou has plugged the leaks in his wrestling or cardio. Stipe at 7/5 seems very generous

  9. Mildly related, but I was rewatching the 2000 Royal Rumble, and noticed there was a run of four entrants who were all dead (Vis, Bossman, Test and Bulldog). When you think of the ages of all those guys, plus the fact it was an event in the 00's, it was quite a sad moment. Got me thinking though, that there must be Rumbles from the early 90's where that number in a row would be higher, and got me wondering how high that number actually gets,

  10. Have just finished watching KnuckleMania. Ive never watched a full bare knuckle show before, but was generally impressed with the show. A few of the issues I had with it:

    - The commentary was crap. I never liked Sean Wheelock from his Belator days, and Chris Lytle was awful. Lytle's constant, vacuous smiling and staring into the camera was very irritating. Its not just him that does this, though, it seems like a constant thing with most MMA pundits, but just looks weird to me. Ebb's favourate, old Goldy, is particularly awful for this when hes on camera.

    - Nine fights, despite being shorter than MMA, is still far too many for a PPV, Id say. Watching 9 fights, it does start to become samey and sort of blend into one, as there isnt much variation in what youre watching. With a UFC PPV, you could see five very different styles of fight. With a boxing PPV event, youre seeing a big star fight. Bare Knuckle cant replicate either of those models, so cant really see a way for them to be successful. Lots of similar style fights, one after another, with no names isnt going to lead to much success I dont think.

    - The Bruce Buffer-lite announcer was crap. Even stole his "Iiiiiiiiits Tiiiiiiiime" gimmick. Makes them look tacky. His "Helllllo Hellllllo" first intro was a huge cringe fest too. Funny to see Miragliotta's face during it, as hes obviously thinking what a tit this guy is.

    - Why did the fighters need to wear a mask on the giant entrance ramp, completley away from everyone, walking to the ring? Bugged me every time I saw it. We see the commentators standing next to each other (no masks), backstage interviewers talking side by side to fighters (no mask), the refs not wearing masks. When the fighters actually got close to people they took the mask off. This irrationally annoyed me every time.

    - I had flashbacks to watching my Smart Mark Video tapes and DVDs of IWA:MS and CZW at the end of the PPV, when that promoter was in the ring waffling on to close the show. Remember how Ian Rotten and Zandig would nearly always finish the show with a shitty and overly long promo? Similar vibes with this guy, who no one gives two shits about, cutting a promo about "you dont know how far we can go", and other shit that no one cares about.

    Β

Having said all that, there was plenty of good action during the show. That first womens match was great and easily the fight of the show. Plenty of other good KOs throughout the show. Nice to see Leben win. Dont understand how the ref knew it was a punch to the eye but still gave the guy five minutes to recover. In MMA this isnt the case, so maybe thats where the BK rules differ. Paige did OK, but was clearly second best. They seemed to be driving home the narrative of "Paige is going to use her physical advantage and strength to clinch up Brit (n. Bret) Hart", when Brit clearly was the stronger fighter, and Paige isnt exactly known for a Cyborg like phyisique. Was bizarre. Fully expecting this show to have bombed, but there does seem some sort of potential in here somewhere. Maybe longer fights involving the bigger stars is a road they could go down.

Fun little fact: Parks & Recreation was originally supposed to beΒ a Karen Fillipelli spin-off show. She leaves her job at Scranton and gets a job in Pawnee. Hence why it’s shot in the same documentary style as The Office. They ultimately decided not to do that and make it it’s own show and have Rashida Jones play an original character instead.Β
    Β

Any sources as to that being true? From everything Ive read, it was only ever going to be the vehicle for Amy Poehler. I think it was just a case of fans putting 2 and 2 together because it was being made by the same people who did The Office,

    Β

The Office is genius though, and something I go back to regularly. Seasons 2 and 3 are where it peaked too. It also takes me back to the good times where me and my friends would all watch a US download of it weekly, usually followed by an episode of Lost on a Friday

Which works out as meaning NBC needs to attract 1.6 million new subscribers to make it profitable (including however many of the current 1.1 million US WWE Network subscribers come over). That's 1.6 million people, only from the US, and who don't have Comcast/Cox cable (which includes Peacock Premium for free) or subscribe to Peacock already.

At a time around only 2.2 million Americans watch WWE on free TV.

Maybe they're banking on WWE bringing in a load of new advertisters for them, which would offshoot the cost? Wouldnt suprise me if WWE pitched it all about how many social media/media followers they have, so buying it for such a price includes plenty of advertising for Peacock to all of WWE's millions of followers.

  13. The in-cage weight of Conor in that fight against Diego Brandao, where he looked like death weighing in, probably wasnt that much off what he weighed in at in the cage against Poirier on the weekend. Hes clearly not going to the extremes he did back in the old days, so Id say youre right that hes not having any sort of physical advantage any more. Hes probably now cutting the same weight as all the guys hes fighting, and probably cant add any more muscle (naturally) to his frame, so physically can never do the insane weight cut for 155, even if he wanted to try and do it.

It's not an add-on. It's part of Peacock Plus.

Does that mean they will include adverts then for all of the WWE Network content? On my news feed recently there was lots of moaning that people are paying $4.99 per month to stream The Office with ad breaks, so youd be better off buying the DVD Boxset to watch it ad free. $4.99 a month to watch all the back catalouge of wrestling but with a load of ads thrown in it seems like an awful offer to me.

  15. Just had a gander on this app just now. Bizarely, it looks like the news feed still hasnt been updated from the last shows results. For an official app, you think it would have changed by now. The whole app is quick clunky and difficult to navigate too I think. Am I also missing something with our group, too? Cant see any info with regards to who you picked or what score you got? Just a list of names that I cant click on. Even when I click on someone from the friends list, no info is on there too. Would it be this slow to be updated? Otherwise I cant really see the point in this

Rodriguez smashing Ribas had completely slipped my mind until I read your review @wandshogun09. I think Ribas will bounce back. It was a bit weird with Herb stepping in but not touching them.Β

I think it was very lucky for Herb's sake that she managed to finish it quickly after. A ref cant step so far into the action that his legs are bascially touching the rocked opponents head and his arms are touching the aggressors back of head when they are fighting on the ground, and not expect the fighter to think hes ending it. Taking steps foward into the action is as good as stopping it for me.

    Β

Maybe I havent been paying attention, but when did they change the Tale Of The Tape graphics for certain fights? First time Ive seen them like this I think. They did it for the first and last fight on the main card. They're abysmal, especially the weird shadow behind the "Weight Bout" graphic, and the constant panning backwards of the camera during it. If I were that sponser on it as well, I wouldnt be best pleased about the viewer needing a magnifying glass to see my logo during the main event of the show too.

    Β

Pleased for Chandler too, as hes been a great watch for years over in Bellator. Nice to see him having success on the big stage. Just having a glance of his Wiki bio too, and noticed he lost two in a row to Will Brooks. Cant remember them fights at all, but I assume they were grappling heavy matches where Brooks dominated, which may be of interest if he does face Khabib. Granted, they were in 2014, but he was already in his late 20s by then so not exactly a rookie just devloping his skills.

  17. I've signed up too. With it being mostly a fantasy pick em sort of app, I assume people will presume it would be a username and email deal to sign up. This one does need a verification code, your address, phone number and other things to register, which is a bit of a faff. I assume it had to be that way as it looks like you can bet with real money too.Β

Can you join a group with adding anyone as a friend? I'm struggling to add the ukff group as it is.Β

  18. Im not on Twitter, can you see what the result is for that poll yet or have to wait?

    Β

I know its all McGregor click bait, but nearly every day recently on my news feed I have a story about how amazingly different Conor's physique is compared to a few years back, always backed up with a shitty 'before' pic of him training, and a professionally lit 'after' pic. Even with that, I cant really see a difference at all.

  19. I bet theres a part in Dana's mind about making this a fight for the title, that he hopes Khabib cant stand the fact that Conor has the belt and comes back later in the year to take back the 'his' belt, in front of a packed stadium.

Was just browsing through Conor's Wikipedia page and realised something mildly interesting. Including this show, Conor has headlined 8 PPVs, yet despite being the biggest star of this generation, he only has first billing on two of the shows. Some are understandable, but even Chad Mendes for some strange reason gets his name first on that show.

The other thing I just remembered from looking at his Wiki is how abysmal the poster was for the Cerrone PPV
