  1. I friend of mine, who seems to have an exceptional talent for giving you exactly what you didn't want as a gift, brought me John Cena's The Marine for Christmas. Seeing as I'm a nice chap I didn't immediately batter him to death with it, quite the contrary, I decided to give it a chance. I could waffle on about things like:

    The hammy acting.

    The daft plot.

The inexplicable moment when Cena decides that instead of beating a bad guy with his fists, like every action movie star in the history of ever, he'll lure him in and then surprise him by sticking a big knife into his chest cavity.

The fact that Cena spends a significant portion of the movie being smashed in the face by anything lying around, thus making him the most punchbagiest hero since Thomas Jane in 2004's The Punisher.

The stereotypical Black man who hates being treated like a criminal despite being, y'know, a criminal. This guy was so stereotypical that I expected him to pull a Bargain Bucket out of nowhere and start chowing down on it at any moment.

In fact, that only good thing about this film was the scene where Cena throws a woman in front of a bus. I laughed my arse off, although I don't think it was supposed to be funny. So to summarise; if you want to see John Cena get beaten up constantly, you're entertained by women getting smacked about and you enjoy hinted-at-but-not-explicitly-stated stories about sexual abuse against children then The Marine is the film for you.

  2. Think I'm probably going to buy a game of some kind tomorrow - which Lego game is the best? Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Batman?

Which one did you get in the end?

They're all essentially the same game anyway but I'll be damned if they aren't the most addictive games I've played in years.

  3. EquilibriumAnother awesome Christian Bale flick. Ive never been in the mood to watch it before (too many comparisons with the bloody Matrix series). Really good though, the premise is excellent... plus Im sure there is some deep, hidden critique on society somewhere in there! Weird thing is it looks a bit dated and its not that old... may be that was the plan?

Equilibrium is strongly influenced by George Orwell's 1984" and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", you should read them if you ever get the chance as they're both excellent books. There's a film version of 1984, but it's not very good.
  4. I brought the Vengeance Trilogy a few weeks ago and finally got around to watching Oldboy and Lady Vengeance this afternoon. I caught the ending of Oldboy a few months back when it was on TV so I already knew about the swerve but overall it was pretty good, the fight scenes were more realistic than most films and the plot was both compelling and engaging. Lady Vengeance was a lot more depressing than I was expecting, the scene where the parents were shown the tapes of their children being murdered was particularly sobering and disturbingly realistic. It was interesting to see a vigilante character who was more cerebral and calculating as opposed to the stereotypical glass-eating badass. Great stuff, I'd recommend it.

  5. Wake Up Ron Burgundy

Has that been made already? I thought it was still at the planning stages
Wake Up, Ron Burgundy is an alternate movie based on outtakes from the first film. It's been out for ages in America but as klown said it's only just been released over here as part of the three disc box set. I thought Anchorman was really funny but this was just terrible, you'll understand why a lot of it was cut if you ever watch it.
