  1. I just typed "Marco Huck" into Google News. The lack of mainstream English language coverage is depressing. You've got the most entertaining man in combat sports facing Ola Afolabi, a British fighter, in a world title fight for the third time, coming off a great second fight, and no one seems to care.

  2. There's been suggestion that the rise of basketball in America has robbed the heavyweight division of large, athletic African-Americans. Where in the 70s and 80s, young disinfranchised black kids would look to boxing as a way out of poverty, now it's basketball.

I don't know enough about US sociology to know if that's true, but it kinda makes sense.

I think it's the NFL and not the NBA they always cite. I'm not sure if I buy that though. I would suggest that it's the fact that boxing has fallen in prominence in US culture. I'm sure if you dug up some stats regarding active amateur boxing gyms in the US now versus active boxing gyms in 1950 there'd be a lot less now.

Plus, my understanding (and, yeah, there will be exceptions to this rule) is that to play any of the main US sports at a professional level you need to be big. God bless Floyd Mayweather but he's five-seven and it's not like he missed his calling as an NFL linebacker. When people cite the NFL I always find myself wondering where all the star American (or non-Hispanic American) fighters in the lower weight divisions are. Sure, there are some but it did seem that in earlier decades there were a lot more.

Also, why are there no elite level white America fighters? You ask some Americans that and they will start constructing a narrative based on African-Americans having advantages due to selective breeding practices during slavery. That's all well and good, but there are a lot of white Europeans who compete and succeed at the elite levels. So, I don't buy the slavery argument. Who's the best (or most successful) active white American fighter? Pavlik retired. Who does that leave you with? Paulie Malignaggi? I can't think of anyone else.

  3. I'm struggling to even think when the last really great heavyweight fight was.

I got Wlad vs Sam Peter from 2005

Huck/Povetkin last year was a fight for the ages. Seriously, it was tremendous.

  4. I also had it 115-113 for Froch (having 105-104 going into the twelfth).

What were the official scores? I could have sworn I heard one judge have it going to Froch 118-110. If so, that's an outrageous score.

Also, I thought Jim Watt was ridiculously biased tonight. Trying to sell the idea that Froch had broken Kessler's heart in one of the middle rounds (I think seven) only for Kessler to come back and win the next round. Plus, it's Mikkel Kessler. He's not some untested Jos

  5. I found the website below today. It asks you to choose between a series of policies relating to different issues and then reveals which party you agree with the most. I thought that it was interesting. I'm a fan of the Political Compass as well. I just like this kind of thing.

I got 75% Labour and 25% Green. At the end you supply your post code and it shows you a general overall of the results for your constituency. In Islington North it seems my views are in line with my fellow residents.

Here are the results from 1403 completed surveys in your constituency

    Green Party

    30.06%

    Labour

    24.28%

    Lib Dems

    18.99%

    Conservatives

    13.83%

    UKIP

    8.71%

    BNP

    4.13%

  6. I saw someone highlight this on another forum, and I thought that it was a good illustration of some of the characters who have been elected as UKIP councilors. All 16 UKIP Councillors in Lincoln have refused to sign an anti-racism pledge. That is what is. Richard Geoffrey Fairman, one of those Councillors, explained his reasoning for not signing. It's the simple mindedness of his reasoning that I find staggering. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/05/18..._n_3297890.html

...UKIP Councillor Richard Geoffrey Fairman told The Huffington Post UK they were surprised by the motion, which was put forward so late as to give the party little time to digest it. He said: "Some parts of it were politically correct and therefore not right. My main stance is anything that is politically correct is probably wrong. These parts concerned racism and human rights, the human rights that are allowing criminals in this country to avoid deportation."...

  7. Lucas Matthysse is a scary, scary man. That is power.

I thought when the camera focused on Danny Garcia after the fight I thought he looked worried.

Sky talked to Khan a few minutes after fight ended. He said he would like to fight Matthysse. My brother who considers himself an expert on body language, on account of watching Lie to Me, noticed that as Khan was saying how much he 'd like to fight Matthysse he was shaking his head. I defer to my brother who says that this was Khan's subconscious letting him down.

  8. So, Don King has a world champion again.

    To echo what Ebb said...

Denis Lebedev Vs Guillermo Jones was an incredible fight. Jones won. Lebedev's eye was one of the worst I have ever seen. It was swollen up so much it looked like he'd been in a car crash, and, holy fuck, does Jones have some chin. Jones won by TKO in the eleventh.

Also on the card Alexander Povetkin beat Andrzej Wawrzyk iin three rounds. Povetkin has a look in the first round. Then he turned it on and it became clear that Wawrzyk was out of his depth. So, it looks like Povetkin versus Wlad for latter in the year is on.

I'll steal a tweet from Steve Bunce about Lebedev/Jones .

That was one of the greatest and most savage fights that I have ever seen. Lebedev went down in 11th and that was it. Stunning Jones win.

  9. Nah, the last time I read the Green Party manifesto it seemed well meaning but impractical. I was wondering about how many seats they have as I wanted some perspective on just how important UKIP's newly acquired council seats were in the grand scheme of things.

  10. Khan/Diaz was a good fight. Man, Khan looked vulnerable but came through on points, just. I thought that the judging was good. I was expecting some ridiculous hometown scores but was pleasantly surprised. I had it 114-113 and the judges scores were in that kind of area (I think one was 114-113 and two were 115-112.

I do wonder though if the fight were in the US if Khan might have been warned for holding.

  11. Hughie Fury (Tyson's cousin) had his second pro fight on the card. Hughie is an eighteen year old heavyweight who is a former world amateur champion. He looks like a prospect.

Tyson is a big, hard cunt who likes to have a ruck, and while I am not sold on Tyson as someone who

  12. Tyson is entertaining and he's got heart, I will give him this.

He'll lose to Pulev, who is supposed to fight the winner. Kubrat Pulev is a tough muthafucker and while Cunningham was just too small Pulev goes six-four, two-fifty. He's going to come at Tyson, Tyson won't be able to keep him off and that will be a wrap for Tyson.
