  1. The shows grows in scope as the seasons go on, and it gets very big in scope. The hand isn't revealed in episode 16 but that was the first episode where I got the sense that I was watching a great piece of television. Before that point it was a perfectly watchable show in the way network shows are. Monster of the week. The main characters on the side of good etc. Episode 16 is where I think for the first time it realises its potential.

  2. The Good Wife might be the best show on TV. Over the years it's become so much more than I could have ever imagined. Fleas (Episode 16 of Season 1) was the first moment where it became something more than a watchable network show and over the following four seasons (Season 5 just finished) it has hit that high mark again and again. It's by far the best legal drama I've ever seen. It a show where they aren't afraid to have the characters change and evolve and they are comfortable with the characters being less than good. It's not a show about a bunch of lawyers who are fighting the good fight. Things are nuanced and subtle and difficult in a way that few network shows are. They also aren't afraid to burn the whole thing down at times and for that to have geuine consequences for the characters and the story.

Over the years The Good Wife has been a truly special show.

The New Yorker website has a piece entitled The Greatness of

  3. Hector Alfredo Avila is a good opponent for Joshua and he did go nine rounds with Chisora. That said it was a bored and disinterested Chisora who was coming off a series of fights with name opponents and who wasn't up for a fight with an opponent who he seemed to perceive as some random bloke from Argentina.

  4. I believe one of the main reasons for Naz's retirement was that he had a lot of trouble with his hands.

    According to himself...

..So why did he quit after only one defeat in 37 fights? "I was 28 when I had my last fight and I'd been 21 years boxing. I know fighters these days go on to 35 or 40 but one of the main things for me was that my hands just couldn't hold up, they were giving me serious pain. I had to have cortisone injections before virtually every fight in the later stages. They are no joke...
  5. I should preface by saying that by gambling is all nickle and dime level...

God bless Chris Arroela. I had money on him to win and money on him to win by KO.

Paddy Power are pretty great. I had bet on Ricky Burns to win however when I saw Beltran walking to the ring, seeing how confident and relaxed he was, I made a bigger bet on him to win. Despite the decision, I logged into my Paddy Power account just now and have seen that I have received a "R Beltran Justice Payout". So, they've paid out on a Beltran win.

  6. There is no way that fight was a draw or a Burns win. Or if there was I didn't see it. I had it 116-112 for Beltran.

Burns was also allowed to hold all night without getting even so much as a warning.

  7. Bit crooked. Clean though. He's married to a lawyer so it's not exactly a barrier to him having a life. He's very out-going, unlike myself.

I hope it's not a new DWP rule where they can basically slag off your appearance? Would be rather out of order. Especially if they say that kind of shit to the vulnerable.

I have great teeth, and the reason I have great teeth is because I had braces for years when I was a teenager. You don't just go to the dentist and come out fifteen minutes later with a Hollywood smile. So, what does the job adviser expect your brother to do?

I'm baffled by the fact your brother's teeth came up. Surely that kind of shit can't be the norm. I can understand the job advisers telling people to not to go to interviews in their pants etc but telling people to, for instance, lose weight or get their teeth straighten seems like a bit of a liberty.

  8. Low Winder Sun, which is a new AMC show, looks like it might be good. It's based on a two part BBC drama which aired back in 2006. The first season of the US remake runs for 10 episodes.

It's about corrupt police type chaps in Detroit.

Mark Strong who was the lead in original BBC show is once again the lead in this version. Only in this version he is pretending to be an American. Lennie James also has a big role. I like Lennie James and try to check out most of the things he does. Lennie is also pretending to be an American. This bodes well. Normally when an American cable show features a British actor pretending to be an American it means that it will be a good show. Off the top of my head Oz, The Wire, Homeland, Sons of Anarchy, Deadwood and The Walking Dead all feature a British actor pretending to be an American. Hell, The Wire, The Walking Dead and Homeland each have two British actors pretending to be Americans. Low Winter Sun also has two. This puts it in great company.

It premiers tonight in the US. Over here it's being shown on Friday (16/08) on Fox.

A link to the trailer is below.

  9. How was Lebedev's eye after the fight? Did he have any long lasting effects? His eye was grotesque by the stage they finally stopped the fight. I think he looked the worst I have ever seen anyone look.

  10. DVDVR are having some issues. I used to go there a lot in years past and still wander over there on occasion. Though nowadays my visits are infrequent. Still, I would be sad to see the place disappear from the web.

Judging by the message of their front page it seems that though they are down they aren't out and will rise again.

    Hi There

Yes - nothing else but this page is working. It has been nothing but a comedy of errors. We aren't dead. We are stubborn so we are keeping this most unlikely party going (as long continue to ignore how long I have known some of you fuckers now).

There have been a lot of expenses paid out in a short period of time so if anyone is feeling frisky and wants to throw some shine our way (is that what the kids say? shine? I have no idea. I am old and white) find me the way you have already been stalking me (Facebook, Twitter (@philrippa - shockingly creative I know), E-mail) and I can shoot you a paypal account. We will reward folks with something. What? I have no idea. It won't be porn. Don't get your hopes up. And if you don't - that's cool. We rarely ask since it kinda makes our skin crawl but times are a changing...

Long story short. Apparently old host couldn't handle the traffic the site/board generated. We have switched to a new host company and have upgraded the type of server we are using (VPS for those who are nerdy and really really want to know.) The process of moving has been a fiasco mainly since old host company is... not the easiest to work with. However - these changes should make it so that the constant downtime is no more. Plus we are trying to build in some flexibility in case we need to expand again.

In regards to the actual main site - everything is currently missing because it might have been deleted for reasons I can't explain by our exes (or the possibility exists that we broke our own website. Are you really surprised by this idea?). I have a lot of stuff spread across countless computers and flash drives. I am just trying to avoid that headache so we are waiting to see if the Anna Benson of web hosts can find our stuff.

In regards to the board - we appear to have all the old posts. We just have to purchase an actual new board to house everything. So the possibility that we will start fresh exists. Right now our goal is to just get everything up and running since I can assure you Dean and I are tired of dealing with it.

And, yes I am getting a kick out of the fact that my Norton's keeps trying to block the site despite there being no content on it whatsoever. Stupid Technology.

I will posts updates when I have them or the board will just start working. Who the fuck knows? - Rippa

  11. Thompson did some announcing with Bunce and co last week. He's got a ton of personality.

I wrote this on another forum (and maybe here as well) after the first Thompson/Price fight. I think it applies again.

...There is a narrative espoused by some British boxing folks (like Frank Maloney) that the Klits' opponents are terrible. When those people make that argument there's also a tacit suggestion that when a real fighter comes along that he's going to expose those Ukrainian clowns. So, those British boxing folks do end up with egg on their face when, for instance, David Price gets TKOed by someone Wlad thoroughly outclassed and stopped twice or David Haye goes over to Germany and, well, gets treated like every other Wlad opponent...
  12. I think more than anything this shows that the fighters Wlad completely shuts down (and he shut Thomspon down twice) are a lot better than people like Steve Bunce and Frank Maloney give them credit for. Maloney has been telling people for years that Wlad is a hype job who beats up incompetent cans.

All that said, I do feel bad for Price.

  13. Muslim World Network (Sky channel 857), which is a new channel aimed at British Muslims. I find it fascinating.

The channel hasn't officially launched yet (that happens July 1) however at 10pm everyday they have a live studio phone in show normally fronted by Jawad (from London - who as far as I can gather converted to Islam in 1996 or rededicated himself to Islam in 1996; I had assumed that he was a black guy and was a convert but I think I heard him mention that he's Pakistani so it's possible that he was born a Muslim and strayed from his faith) and Faruq (a white convert from Essex - who actually isn't on tonight) They are usually joined by various other guests as well. I discovered the channel by accident and I find myself flicking to it most evenings if I have nothing to watch. I don't know why I find it so interesting. It's probably because it's a view in to a world I know nothing about. The channel isn't slick. I think they do have something though, and Jawad especially comes across as very likable and is somewhat charismatic in a kind of subdued British way.

Also, the other week I discovered Donnie Swaggert, a christian evangelist. He's the son of Jimmy Swaggert. Swaggert senior being the preacher who famously got caught with a hooker, said sorry on TV and then got caught in the company of another hooker.

I'm not religious at all but I find Brother Donnie ridiculously entertaining. The man is the best promo I have ever seen. There is no professional wrestler (and I find the theatrical preaching of Brother Donnie entertaining in the same way I do pro-wresting) who can touch Donnie, and I mean no pro wrestler. I find him so entertaining that I watched a one hour You Tube video of him on Saturday. It was just him preaching. The man is a wonderful performer. I can't begrudge him one dime. Donnie cuts money promos and so Donnie makes money. He deserves every cent. He can be found on the Sonlife (Sky 596) or You Tube and such.

  14. In the video hype piece before his fight on Channel 5 Degale was talking about how he'd beat Carl Froch. He then went on to say something like, "Look at the fighters he's lost to. Andre Ward, Dirrrell and Taylor. He can't deal with movement." All well and good aside from the fact that Froch beat Dirrell and Taylor.
