  1. I never saw the reason for the Zoolander love. I saw it after my sister tried to convince me it was the funniest film ever. Ever.

The only gag I laughed at was the one about him not being able to turn right, and then doing a 270 degree turn to the left.

Obviously, it's a matter of opinion, humour always is. I wouldn't say it was the funniest movie ever, because my favourite movie of all time is Withnail & I, but I think it's pretty damn funny.

Will Ferrell in particular is brilliant - there's a hilarious bit where he just runs across a room. There's no gag or subtext, he just runs across, but he does it in such a way that you can't help but chuckle. It's one of the silliest bits of humour I've ever seen.

Now you are talking mate! My mrs introduced me to film, it's wicked!

  2. Zoolander

    - saw for 1st time the other day, bloody funny but not quite as good as the other Ben Stiller movie about the ice skating(?)

Can't say I'm familiar with a Ben Stiller ice skating movie. If you mean Blades of Glory and you're saying it's better than Zoolander, then you must be shot.

Zoolander's one of my favourite films of all time. One of the main reasons is for Will Ferrel as the awesome Mugatu.

Yep Blades of Glory was the film I'm thinking of. They are similar with the pro wrestling influences but Blades of Glory goes further. Will Ferrel is funnier Ben Stiller come to think of it.

  3. I actually loved Signs. Granted there were some glaringly questionable things like why would the Aliens even attempt to invade a planet which is 70% water - the substance which is lethal to them, and how they can master space travel but have difficulty opening a wooden door, but the general suspense of the film and the 'less is more' approach to the presence of the aliens is really gripping.

Maybe it's because you don't see the normal sci-fi 'laser beams and spaceships' stuff that so many alien films incorporate and the general feel of the film is more savoury, with a much smaller cast making it more intimate, but I'm a big fan of the film.

I reckon I ought to see it right from the beginning to see what I missed, the film did grip me til the end I must admit despite the daftness. I want to see if Joaquin's character was supposed to be a bit simple or not lol

  4. Signs - Mel Gibson + Joaquin Phoenix

Granted I didn't see it right from the beginning which can make a difference with the enjoyment of a film as it might not make sense but this was rubbish. When the alien turned up at their house towards the end they boarded up the place instead of getting tooled up. Gibson's acting was very poor, he just looked dopey as did Joaquin who seemed to be playing Gibson's backward brother. I get the impression they had all been told to under act when the alien arrived the 2 kids were unbelievably calm. Oh yeah despite the use of Joaquin's baseball bat on the alien it was good old strategically placed H2o saving the day.

The matter of Gibson's faith being questioned seemed to be the most important factor of the film. I'm presuming Gibson directed the movie himself. The best scene of the film I saw was Joaquin and the 2 kids sitting on the sofa wearing tin foil hats :p

Joaquin has been so good in other films I couldn't believe it.

Anyone else seen this, what do you reckon?

  5. Today my cousin lent me a copied DVD of a Channel 4 show which aired back in 2000 called Disinformation. It's basically a counter-culture program featuring the usual nutjobs claiming to have traveled through time or were supposedly brainwashed by government agencies and forced to do strange experiments along with interesting features on art, pornography, cults and conspiracies. A lot of the really off the wall stories were somewhat unconvincing and everyone involved in the Satanic Cult segment came off looking like total imbeciles but there's a really fascinating interview with Genesis P-Orridge (of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV fame) where he talks about his highly controversial performance art pieces, the 1970's Industrial music scene and how he was referred to in Parliament as a "wrecker of civilisation".

The real gem was on disc two which was a collection of footage from DisinfoCon 2000 which featured an inspiring forty-odd minute lecture from Scottish comic book writer and artist Grant Morrison. I wasn't familiar with Morrison or his work before this but his lecture was a real spectacle, I love it when someone I've never even heard of stands up on a stage in front of a crowd of people and talks about the kind of shit I've had floating around in my brain tank for ages. You can watch the whole lot on YouTube (part one here), he talks about Aliens and stuff in part one but don't be put off.

Thanks for sharing that, I'll have a look at that on youtube. I rarely read comics these days but Grant Morrison is one of my all time fave writers, I'm intrigued to watch that.

I saw something with Pat Mills on Controversial TV recently, he saw UFOs but was disappointed have wrote about sci-fi for years lol

  6. I'm losing Sky after the weekend so have been watching stuff I'll miss out on.

Dog the Bounty latest series on Bravo.

Hadn't seen it for a while as they kept showing repeats.

BULLSHIT - Penn and Teller, FX.

    - never seen this series before, taped a couple of those last night, seen 1st one about Walmart. It's odd I'm used to watching the old Mark Thomas programmes off Channel 4 investigating corporate scandals etc then this programme comes along with a different angle with all the positives. I reckon it'll appeal to some on here who like Screen Wipe. Oh yes and there is some bare boobies at the end :)

Well the second one was fun it was about the right to expose one's breasts! It focussed on women complaining about other women breastfeeding their babies in public and an aging biker chick campaigning for the right to go topless at Daytona beach. If you are a fan of breasts and human rights like myself then you'll enjoy it.

  8. Anyone been watching 'Sons of Anarchy'? Just started on Bravo (episode 2 is this Tuesday on Bravo) and I downloaded the Pilot from iTunes.

Seems like a good idea for a show, I wonder how much flack they are taking over the subject matter, some pretty shocking stuff in the pilot even if it is a bit messy.

    Thorughly enjoyed it.

I keep meaning to see that, looks good.

I like the sound of a new V series, loved the original in the 80s.

There are just so many US series on now, my TV mag has them all listed on one page.

  9. Just bumped this topic back up, so what are watching?

    Please share :)

Heroes is back on tonight on bbc 2, they are showing 2 eps back to back. I watched both the bbc2 and 3 episodes last time so will only need to watch the 2nd one.

For those who like documentaries last night was good on bbc2 a programme looking at how the first humans travelled out of Africa.

Channel 5 - The Man Behind the DaVinci Code. Tied in with premiere of Angels and Demons, they also showed The DaVinci Code film.

    TUF 9 on Virgin 1 +1 ;)

Anyone know when the Justin Lee Collins programme is on where he has a go at being a Luchadore?

The Sky Mag seemed to say this Tuesday but it doesn't look like it on the EPG.

  10. On Channel 4 right now Around the world in 80 trades.

Saw Heroes the other which is starting to make more sense... I think

Saw the 1st Wire but a bit dark for my taste my still it was motherfucking well made!

Otherwise I'm watching the Apprentice which has it's own thread so I'll comments for there and the junior beeb reality show - The Speaker.

  11. I've met Muhammed Ali at a book signing in the 90s then about a year ago met Jordan. A bit of a contrast :)

Both came across as nice people at the time, but when you meet someone at a book signing it is over so quick.

Also met a load comic writers and artists back in the day. John Ostrander a writer for several comics I used to read chatted with me for ages and even drew me a picture lol Another one was Pete Miligan who was really funny.

Oh yeah another I met was Tim Westwood at Notting Hill Carnival in 1995 when he first joined Radio 1. I played dumb with him and acted as if I knew nothing about him and asked if he was to do with the radio 1 road show and if Janice Long would be there. "No it's Rap man" :p

Also met Paul Weller at the 100 Club to see his support band at the time. I was just telling my mates that my dad had been working at his house that week then I saw him just behind me lol He was a nice bloke and chatted for a while about music.

  12. I gave Heroes a miss on Monday, I'm getting frustrated with watching it now :(

Stuff I have watched and enjoyed last night was the story following the Harrods Lion. Basically 2 Auzzie chaps living in London in the swinging 60s bought a Lion cub from Harrods caring for it lmuch like a huge dog then eventually releasing it into the wild. Here is a youtube video that got people interested in it.

    Reunited with the Harrods Lion

Later on I saw Shameless which I have got back into watching. I had stopped bothering with it ages as thought it was just a bit silly but found myself enjoying it.

Oh yeah following that had a chuckle at The Big Bang Theory. So all Channel 4 for me!

Don't forget The Apprentice is back on tonight!

  13. I watched Shameless last night which is good for a laugh. I did think it was too silly but now unashamedly enjoy it :)

I don't usually watch the God Channel but flicking through the channels before Shameless I see they have a conspiracy theory type programme on it with their angle being that they refer to biblical prophecy. Anyway it was intriguing stuff!

  14. Heroes is back on tonight at 9pm!

And it's looking a bit rubbish so far. :(

    What don't you like it?

I enjoyed the first series and have followed it ever since as unlike most of these different American series I'd caught it right from the beginning but it has never been as good as the first series. Perhaps the problem is with some of the characters like some modern wrestling is that you can't get behind the characters as they are not clearly defined wether they are on the side of good or evil. Nathan is one of these types but seems to have turned heel now or has he?

  15. Heroes is back on tonight at 9pm!

Anyone else see the programme about the Amish people in Pensylvania?

It was just up my street, not literally I don't live there lol

There was a good new Austrailian comedy on Dave the other day called Chandon if I remember correctly.

Other than that I've been enjoying reruns of Only Fools and Horses on GOLD :)

  16. Hey us northerners aren't all negative hate filled people you smug southern twat.

Anyway I was instructed to bring my discussion here.

    Anybody watch Argumental on Dave?

It's a quality show and I love the banter between Rufus and Marcus.

I was only joking Steve, hence the smilies :) One of my best friends is a jordy, I love his sense of humour.
