I'm wondering if they'll do an angle where the Riots start the Iron Fist match a fall down or something, as punishment for Rob Lynch attacking Chris Roberts after JD being pinned by Paul Robinson here.

Full write-up on the show to follow at some point this afternoon...

So, then.. pretty much one year on from the announcement that shows in Sittingbourne would no longer be under the IPW:UK banner, what has become the regular, albeit smaller scale home of IPW:UK, the White Oak Leisure Centre in Swanley hosted "Extreme Measures 2013", the first ever tag team version of the old IPW:UK staple. The Extreme Measures format remained the same, with four first round matches leading to an elimination match featuring the winning teams, though the prize for the tournament winners, an Iron Fist match against the tag team champions The London Riots, would not be held on the night, but sensibly held back for the "9th Anniversary Show" on the grand stage of Broxbourne Civic Hall.

We started off with the Magnums ('Dirty' Dick Riley & 'Filthy' Chris Walker), against the popular products of the IPW:UK training school, the Whizz Kids (Lance Lawrence & Joel Martinengo). I've seen the Whizz Kids a couple of times this year, and been impressed by their plucky underdog act. The Magnums were new to me, but I was struck by how Walker brought the sleaze and the trash talking, while Riley was more impressive on the in-ring side of things. Unsurprisingly, the Magnums were able to control most of the bout by isolating Lance Lawrence, leaving his partner Martinengo on the apron to get the crowd going and desperately wait for the tag. In the past I've seen the younger Martinengo take the beating while Lawrence lives every part of his beating from the apron, which is perhaps a bit more effective. Anyhow, the tag eventually came, Joel cleaned house, some chaos ensued and the Whizz Kids were able to advance courtesy of a Martinengo roll-up at the 8:36 mark.

Next out were the IPW:UK champion Sha Samuels and his regular partner in the New Firm, Paul Ryker. Their opponents, the Bhangra Knights, have been the overall most popular act on most of the Swanley shows I've seen in 2013, but they haven't been very successful against the New Firm in battles of the past. Here, any chance of a fair fight went straight out the window, as Ryker sat in the crowd near the entranceway, and jumped Darrell Allen as the Knights made their entrance. A long beating of both Darrell and RJ Singh ensued, but eventually Singh made it into the ring and insisted that the bell be rung, so the match finally got under way. Having already sat through a prolonged beating, it was hard to get into another five minutes of Samuels and Ryker pounding Singh down. RJ did eventually make his own comeback and get Darrell involved, but just as it looked like Sha might get into trouble, Ryker used a loaded punch in full view of the referee, and that drew the disqualification at 7:04. The association of Samuels, Ryker and the London Riots means the continued effort to eliminate the Bhangra Knights by any means necessary made storyline sense, but overall this wasn't very compelling viewing and seemed to drag on for ages.

The mood was lightened by the beginning parts of the third first round bout, as Mexican Justice (the usually entertaining Mexican Eagle and the "Warden" Phil Ward) took on the WWA. I didn't catch the individual names announced for the WWA, but the Wrestlers With Attitude (!) and their Vanilla Ice style mid-90s clothing and entrance raised more than a chuckle, and the rap battle that started proceedings even featured a cameo from referee Chris Hatch (!!) that left the crowd in awe and ringside photographer Sarah doing her best to hide. The match itself was fairly simple yet inoffensive.. one half of the WWA lost most of his facial disguise, which left eagle eyed fans able to recognise Jonathan Windsor moonlighting from this usual position as Lord. Mexican Eagle was able to cheat in the end, giving Mexican Justice the cheap pinfall victory at 9:37.

The best of the in-ring action came in the final of our first round bouts, as Super Crazy continued his UK tour, teaming with "Aerial Assassin" Will Ospreay, who is rapidly increasing in profile across the south-east of the country, against the reunited Thrillers team of "Star Attraction" Mark Haskins and "Irresistible" Iestyn Rees. While this wasn't the feature attraction that the originally announced Crazy vs Haskins would have been, it was a lot of fun and allowed for plenty of advancement. Haskins and Ospreay had some particularly nice exchanges, and Super Crazy certainly played his part. In the end, Haskins accidentally superkicked his partner Rees, Crazy hit Haskins with a brainbuster (I think), and Ospreay was able to capitalise with a corkscrew swanton for the pin on Haskins at 11:15. That was a great finish.

After the match, an irate Rees claimed Haskins was no different from the many "Skinny Boys" he's been beating in challenge matches on these Swanley cards, and tried to lay a beating on the Star Attraction, but Haskins was able to escape and lay down the challenge for the 9th Anniversary Show. The battle of the Thrillers is set!

Following a slightly extended interval due to Super Crazy not being ready for photographs, Ashley Reed came out to talk about his shoulder injury, which sadly requires a second surgery and leaves Reed unable to say if or when he could come back. Reed then was forced to withdraw from the British National Championship, but he was allowed to pick his own replacement. After introducing Jamie Farrell from the IPW:UK training school, the men responsible for Reed's injury, the London Riots came out. The Riots took out Farrell swiftly, and Reed tried to defend himself, which brought Paul Robinson out for the save.

Robinson's scheduled match against James Davis of the Riots naturally started immediately from there, but didn't get chance to become anything particularly noteworthy before Robinson picked up a victory with his Shooting Star Press in 6:42. After Robinson left celebrating his win, the Riots began picking on referee Chris Roberts, claiming they "don't lose". Rob Lynch even squashed Roberts in the corner, which seemed to be leading to some sort of sanctions against the Riots from IPW:UK management.

Main event time was up next, the Four Team Elimination Match to determine the Extreme Measures winner. I was surprised to see the Bhangra Knights emerge to take their place in the line-up here, figuring that if they made it into the match at all, it would be while it was in progress at best. It seems the New Firm and the London Riots still have reasons to be worried here. Mexican Justice quickly talked themselves into trouble, with verbal abuse of all the other teams leading to a flurry of superkicks from everyone, and Ospreay hit his corkscrew swanton once again for the first elimination at just 0:25. That left us with three fan favourite teams to battle it out in the Whizz Kids, the Bhangra Knights and Super Crazy Mental, and there were some good exchanges before the two experienced teams began working over the youngsters, eventually leading to the Whizz Kids' elimination at 7:52, once again due to Ospreay and his corkscrew swanton. Sadly, there wasn't much left to the bout from there, with the Bhangra Knights overcoming the odds and pinning Ospreay with the Bhangra Buster. Time of fall: just 9:08 total.

Overall, Extreme Measures 2013 was a reasonable little set up show. The Iron Fist match between the London Riots and the Bhangra Knights will definitely benefit from the big stage of the 9th Anniversary Show, and Mark Haskins, who is truly excelling in whatever role is asked of him across the country, will hopefully get to show Iestyn Rees that he's not a Skinny Boy pushover.

It was also announced that Sha Samuels will be defending his IPW:UK Championship against Drake Younger at the Broxbourne Civic Hall. Who knows what to expect from that one? Also announced are Grado and CZW Champion Drew Gulak, while fans following IPW:UK in recent times must be wondering who else will make the cut.

I look forward to being in Broxbourne to find out.
