Malaga dominated early on and scored with their first attack straight from the kickoff when Julio Baptista's cross was headed in by Santi Cazorla at the far post. Malaga had several good chances after that but couldn't score a second. Atletico didn't have their first effort on goal until midway through the first half. Malaga went two up in the 37th minute when a freekick was pumped up the field and a Atletico defender headed the ball straight to Santi Cazorla who brought the ball forward and scored. Atletico were handed a lifeline in injury time after the ref gave a slightly controversial penalty. Although there was contact that made the Atletico forward stumble slightly, the ref seemed to play advantage and the Atletico player continued on and powered a shot wide. it was only after that, that the ref called the play back for a penalty. Falcao took full advantage and sent the 'keeper the wrong way.  After some technical trouble early in the second half the game restarted. It's always said that it's dangerous for a team to pull one back just before half time and this proved right again as Atletico were a different side second half. Just as Malaga dominated a lot of the first half, Atletico dominated most of the second half. Malaga held onto the lead, sometimes fortuitously, such as when Falcao's shot from a cutback hit either post, stayed out, and then a defender on the goal line cleared the ball against an Atletico player and it bounced against the crossbar until it finally fell into the greatful arms of Willy Caballero. Diego equalised for Atletico in the 69th minute and eleven minutes later Falcao broke through and scored the winner. Malaga had a couple of chances late on but the ball just wouldn't fall kindly to them in the box. Overall, neither side would have been too disheartened with a draw but it was Atletico's strong showing in the second half that sealed the win.  Malaga goals: Santi Cazorla (2', 37')  Atletico Madrid goals: Falcao (45' pen, 80'), Diego (69') Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
