Anyone a fan of Richard Linklater's films? I've been on a right kick with him recently, Waking Life is awesome. The visuals are amazing, its freaky, dreamlike and a strange wandering through the imagination. Also, Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are interesting little flicks. Slacker's another fine example, although the student film look and shite acting can get annoying.
been meaning to watch more Linklater films, i have Slacker but i still ain't watched it. I'll get on it!
I much prefer Slacker to Waking Life. Visuals aside, I thought he went up his own arse a bit with that one. Sunrise/Sunset are the best, although I quite liked Tape, Suburbia and School of Rock too. Dazed and Confused is overrated.
Â
Yeah, I found Dazed and Confused very overrated too. And Waking Life clearly isn't the worst film ever made, purely on any technical level. You don't have to like it, but the visuals are clearly stunning.
Â
Except they aren't. They're disorientating and annoying. The film itself is nothing but pretentious monologues about nothing. Anyone who actually thinks Waking Life has something to say or connects with it on any level needs to throw themselves in front of a train.
Â
They're meant to be disorientating considering its all one long dream. At first I found them exactly that was put off by the visuals, but slowly I became dragged into the film through those visuals. I took it for what it was, a technical experimentation linked with some of Linklater's favourite ramblings and philosophies, which are common in most of his films. I get that the monologues are pretentious, but so what. It all fit with the dream-like structure of the film.
Â
I'll be checking the train timetable for a swift and painless exit.

Watched Easy Rider yesterday, what a film that is. Loved the acting, the scenery, the music, the bikes, the drugs. Awesome.

Fuck, yeah I forgot the soundtrack. That is so intense. I was slowly being drawn in with the use of sound and felt like I was going insane myself. Class film.

Watched Darren Aronofsky's Pi recently too. I'm a big fan of Requiem for a Dream and this was another astounding piece of film, the disintegration of the human mind was so involving.

It's quite poor quality, it's a live recording, but still it's Arcade Fire doing Springsteen...
Â
Â
Good to see a fellow Springsteen fan and Nebraska's an interesting choice for favourite Springsteen album, although I personally find it difficult to overlook Born to Run every hour of every day, and my choice cut from his more sombre, acoustic, stripped down albums is Devils and Dust.
-
Merci for Yellow.Canada's got a long way to go on the Springsteen front, but they've got a TONNE of great artists at the moment who are doing there own thing, Montreal is absolutely buzzing currently, and even Arcade Fire take elements of The Boss. I think I've got a cover of them doing a Springsteen tune (yep, I've got them doing State Trooper, which I think is from Nebraska).
-
I'd be interested in that Yellow version, I'm a cover freak. I'd dare not go near saying he's the Canadian Springsteen, I've got If I Had A Rocket Launcher, and it's a decent enough tune, but doesn't get me excited in the slightest.I've got her version of 'Yellow' by Coldplay if anyone wants it.Thanks for Don't Stop Believin', as a Journey superfan it interests me greatly.Anyway, here's a couple of songs from the Canadian Springsteen, a guy called Bruce Cockburn (it's pronounced Co-burn). He has an absolutely phenomenal gift for writing lyrics, and these two in particular are stunning. These two songs blow every other "anti-[something]" song I've ever heard right out of the water. Bruce hits pretty hard and pulls no punches when he's attacking something. He's also a pretty good guitarist. If I Had A Rocket Launcher (iTunes required)Call It Democracy (iTunes required)

I only have that track. I'd never even heard of the woman before I got it.
Do you by any chance have the complete Guilt By Association album or just d/l that track? And here's a cover of Journey's Don't Stop Believing...Petra Haden - Don't Stop Believing
-
I challenge anyone to stay still whilst listening to this tune...

Jackie Wilson - Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want To Meet)
Â
And here's a cover of Journey's Don't Stop Believing...

Some soul is needed. This is by a guy called Arthur Alexander, described as Country Soul, whatever the fuck that means, but apparantly his singing style was adopted by Paul McCartney and influenced The Beatles songwriting techniques early on too. This is a top notch song...

His repartee with Chevy Chase in their only scene together is fucking goldmine. Also, his monologue about the Dalai Lama (most of which, if not all was improvised) is classic. I think, as far as pure comedic roles go, it's one of Murray's best.I'd like to bum Bill a lot too.I think it's probably Bill Murray's most over-rated role. And that comes from a guy who would pretty much bum Murray.
-
Here is the most perfect example of Springsteen's live power, prowess and presence. This song is fucking IMMENSE.
Â
-
Certainly shall.
Â
I love Postal Service and think Give Up is an exceptional album with so many great tunes on it, here's a selection...
Â
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
The Postal Service - Sleeping In
The Postal Service - We Will Become Silhouettes
Â
also as a bonus treat here's a couple of covers...
Â
-
I really, really liked that 'You Don't Need This Song', very good stuff. I'm just giving a listen to The Maps and will definitely check out some more Fields. They've both got that Postal Service vibe going on don't they?
First two should work now (I managed to confuse '0' with 'o' in the first one and for some reason put an extra '1' in the second). Here's a couple more Fields. There's one song they have called "If You Fail, We All Fail" which i'll sort out a bit later as I need to upload it off the CD as the one I have on me pooter at the mo I got from itunes and so won't work on other machines but you can hear it on the music player on the website here.Fields - You Don't Need This SongFields - The DeathUnfortunately those first two tracks can't be found, any chance of a re-up?EDIT - I just listened to the Fields' track and thought it was very arresting and grabbed my attention but did nothing once it had my attention, still I'd like to hear some more though.

Count me as a fan of Andrew Bird as well. Heretics be my favourite song from the album. Here's my favourite track of the moment, not the stuff I usually like (I don't want to shame myself again, but I think it's kind of Hip Hoppy), if there's more stuff like this or someone could point me that vague direction I'd be very happy. MIA - Paper Planes
We're in good company - no less than Danny DeVito is a big fan :duh:Got any non-Armchair Apocrypha tracks pwetty pwease?Yeah, that Andrew Bird album is pretty stellar. I can't figure out why people like Jack Johnson are famous and he isn't, especially when it's not like he's too ugly to be famous or anything..
-
Certianly not overestimating myself there. Glad you liked the track. This is an old blues track from a compilation called 'Banged Up - American Jailhouse Songs 1920s-1950s', I'm sure that indicates enough to know the type of sound it will be...Lonesome Pine Fiddlers - Twenty One Years
No kidding. "Fuck Da Police" was by N.W.A. not Public Enemy. Good track anyway. This song to me sounds like really early kind of hip-hop (I'm no expert on hip-hop by any means), reminescent of Public Enemy's Fuck Da Police,
-
That looks like quite a nice set actually. Here's another of my favourites Blam Blam Fever - The Valentines This song to me sounds like really early kind of hip-hop (I'm no expert on hip-hop by any means), reminescent of Public Enemy's Fuck Da Police, but a lot less aggressive, the message is clearly similar though.
Cheers man... I already had the Lord Tanamo one (the only stuff I have is this double album), but I enjoyed the other one. I have heard a cover of it before (maybe on a Give Em the Boot cd?), so it was good to hear the original...
My 3 disc box-set came today and needless to say I've already wanked all over it (metaphorically of course), and will be filtering a few tracks from it up on here in the coming few days, lets start from the start and get you In The Mood For Ska - Lord Tanamo PHOENIX CITY - Roland AlphonsoSee how that does for you and I'll get back with some more in due course. To recap quickly - yes, HB Andy, please upload some old school ska - I have some and would very much like to hear more.

Great song. I'm a big fan of Two Gallants and this song tops them off. I think Steady Rolling is somewhere else in this thread which is another excellent song. Their themes of death, murder and being imprisoned are really great.EDIT - I've just downloaded the Blues Comp. It looks like wank material mate, nice one. Also, how are people with ska, reggae and rocksteady? I've just ordered a fat ass muthafucking Trojan boxset of some nice old school ska. What are people's thoughts on the whole genre? I'm ratehr a fan I'd say.Two Gallants - 'Las Cruces Jail'I think Chilly and others who don't like what I usually post will like this. I find it tough to describe. It's a jail song, it's a little bit country and a little bit rockabilly, or at least what I believe rockabilly to be. It may not infact, on reflection, be anything approaching that amusingly named genre. Regardless, give it a shot, because it's absolutely brilliant.
-
To continue with The Beatles theme, I'm a big fan of practically any Beatles cover, this being a good 'un...
Â
-
After downloading this I must say I am loving this choice. Unfortunately I couldn't get your 'blind comp' but I'd love to have the opportunity to at some point in the future...!Heres another fantastic blues/folk song. One of my all-time favourate songs from one of my all-time favourate singers.Leadbelly - John HardyVito, any thoughts on my previous post? I uploaded those songs for you buddy, give 'em a listen and let me know what you think. Oh, and if all goes well, my Blues compilation will be uploaded soon.

This is the song from my film of the year as well as soundtrack of the year...
Â
Percy Sledge - Dark End Of The Street
Â
A beautiful soul record full of desperation yet never erring from the chocolatey smooth. Delicious stuff.
Â
EDIT - Oh, this was in This Is England by the way.

I recently watched the Bob Dylan bio-pic, I'm Not There. The thing was, it was really quite excellent in some places, Cate Blanchett especially enraptured me with her depiction of Dylan (although she definitely got the luck of the draw in terms or roles) and the young Dylan as Woody Guthrie was marvellous, the rest was tiresome, drawn out and labourious. Other than that, if you're a fan of Dylan, the music was sensational and kept the pace steady. I'd give it a 7/10. Nearly there, but not quite good enough. I'd rather recommend reading his chronicles, then you get THE great Dylan voice worming it's way into your brain.
