  1. Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb

An insane general starts a process to nuclear holocaust that a war room of politicians and generals frantically try to stop.

Dr. Strangelove, Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film, is very topical as it satires Cold War paranoia. It's actually quite unique in the sense that it's somewhat more intricate than your average comedy and doesn't play out in the same way as older ones, like Young Frankenstein and Airplane. Instead of a non-stop laughs, Dr. Strangelove provides jokes that are nicely built-up through its plot and is considerably darker, too. From what I've heard about it, I was expecting a great amount of slapstick from this film. That wasn't the case, however. Fundamentally, everything is played rather straight, with a combination of sometimes silly dialogue, absurd situations and irony, which works well. The scene in which President Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers) is on the phone to a drunken Kissoff exemplifies this and is, in my opinion, one of the funniest parts of the film.Peter Sellers is nothing short of great throughout, though. He plays three different characters and does so flawlessly. Each of them are funny in their own way and he always appears to have exceptional chemistry with his co-stars. Unfortunately, Dr. Strangelove is very dated now. It's not only because of the subject matter; the pacing seems far to slow at times, especially during the beginning. I'm assuming that audiences were a lot easier to entertain in the 1960s.Nevertheless, this is a good comedy that is definitely worthwile.
Strange movie. Not actually very good. The critical acclaim came from somwhere, but I'm not sure WHERE it came from. Not a bad movie, but nothing special.
  2. The Untouchables - Believe it or not the first time I've seen this film was last night and it's over 20 years old. I thought it was amazing, Kevin Coster looked soooo young!

Outside of the fact that I thought some of the acting was a little too cheesy, I absolutely love this movie. My only gripe was Sean Connery's character. I thought they went on overkill with the idea of him being wise.
  3. DuelThis is absolutely stunning stuff. I wish I could go into a big review like some people to describe it's awesomeness. I didn't expect the movie I got here. Steven Spielberg isn't everyone's favourite director, but I think everyone should see this movie. It's a thriller that definately surpasses what he did with Jaws.

  4. Finally watched the Dragon Gate Six Man from SoH.Absolutely breathtaking to watch at times. I wouldn't go as far as to say one of the best matches ever, but it's definately my match of the year so far, although I haven't seen even CLOSE to a lot of the good matches this year.

  5. The Scottish have invaded the UKFF 50 !I'm actually amazed that Red Lightning made the 50. He's not been the most over exposed wrestler in the UK right now, so he must be pretty good to be in the position that he's in. We still have the likes of Darkside, Conscience, Falcon and Jay Phoenix to come out of the list.

  6. I seen Kid Richie and Chris Whitton up in Bishopton last year. That day, they looked pretty damn good, so I'm not at all surprised by their appearance in this list.I can't wait to see Darkside's placing in here. I was actually thinking that with the exposure he's getting, and with how good he is, he could end up in a VERY strong position.

  7. Baz, have you seen the trailer for the remake? It's scandalous!

What ?!?!Where is this trailer that you speak of ?
It's like the original never existed...
I'm gonna keep an open mind ... but extreme 'ugh' goes to this.Loved the original, my favourite horror movie ever, and definately one of my top 3 movies ever too. I'll go and see the new one with an open mind, in the hope that it surprises me, but I'm not holding any hope after that trailer.
  8. Thank You For SmokingThat was a lot of fun. Not a lot of laugh out loud moments though. Most of the laughs, for me, came from people's reactions to stuff. Especially Nick, which is a character that's gonna stick in my head for ages. Probably my favourite movie character for a long time.Adam Brody was actually great, and his 'I'm gonna impale your ...' speech was one of the laugh out loud moments I was talking about. I'd recommend it.

  9. Lost Highway

Umm ... what the fuck ?!?!

I actually really enjoyed this movie, but there was just something really buggered up about it. That pale looking guy scared the crap out of me. I didn't get it at all, and before anyone asked what I never got ... probably all of it. Ah well, for some reason, I still enjoyed it a hell of a lot.

  10. Watched two more movies last night.

    16 Blocks

First off, I never want to see or hear Mos Def in a movie ever again. His voice was the most irritating voice I have come across in a movie. Outside of that, this was actually a pretty enjoyable movie. Bruce Willis is decent as the alcoholic cop, but there seemed to be more dimensions than usual added onto this one. Mos Def's performance was fine, but as I say, that voice is annoying. The performance that REALLY stood out for me though was David Morse as the crooked cop. That guy deserves a lot more exposure than he seems to get.

    When a Stranger Calls

Hits a lot of the usual horror movie cliches. This movie pulled them off well though, and there was a pretty eerie atmosphere throughout the movie. The fact that you couldn't see ANYTHING that wasn't happening around the main character added a little bit to it. The phonecalls get a bit tedious after a while though.
