  1. a few films to kick off the new year for me -

Antlers - this bored me too tears, good premise but poorly executed and what's with keeping everything dark so you can barley see the monster once it finally appears

American Assassin - this type of film is right up my street, dumb actioner where you can switch you're brain off and have fun . Won't be for everyone but i enjoyed and Michael Keaton gives a top performance

Blue Steel - some one recommended this too me last year, finally got round to watching it today. Wow, this was brilliant .... Jamie Lee Curtis stalked (where have we seen this one before?) by serial killing madman Ron Silver who turns in an absolutely insane performance.  A real gritty, brutal film. I've never seen a Kathryn Bigelow film before but ive been told by a friend to check out her other films so ill definitely be doing that now. Highly recommend this too you guys if you havent seen it before

I watched Blue Steel on IMDB TV, never browsed their selection before until today and they have a great ranging choice of films especially 90's and 80's movies, plus its free which is a bonus

  2. i posted this in the movie review talk thread & thought id also post here for abit more discussion

Now onto the first 4 Hellraiser films for me the first is a really good film, i know loads old it to a high esteem in horror circles. Maybe i don't hold it to that high level as i didnt see it as kid, i dont know but still a real good film. Infact the first 3 films i gave ***1/2 too on Letterboxd. Now for the 4th film (*** i rated it), Bloodline. This was good but, i think there was a really great film in here somewhere which could have been to the point am at the best in series. And as i suspected after doing some reading up, script changes, budget cuts and director changes seem to have changed what the original premise/vision for the film was. Such a shame

  3. got through a fair few films this weekend

Kill List - the reviews i read painted this out to be a great film, my god i was bored too tears, what a load of rubbish. when it come to the 'shocking' ending i just didnt care as i was that bored by the time it reached its conclusion.

12 Angry Men - first time watch for me, absolutely fantastic film. Loved it!

  4. has anyone watched The Kid Detective yet? just watched it tonight and i don't know what to make of it i enjoyed but, going by reviews & especially ratings on letterboxd i didnt enjoy it has much as the majority.

To be honest, i didn't really know what to make of it, i think am going to have to watch it again in the not too distant future for another take on it.

  5. just finished the brilliant Strike Back this afternoon. I never saw it during it's initial 8 season run, which surprises me as it is something that is right up my street. Anyways its a tonne of fun, something you can just put on and enjoy without overthinking, plenty of violence and sex scenes throughout. Co-produced by cinemax who made Banshee so if you have seen that then you know what to expect with Strike Back ha!

Following The Block Island Sound, I caught another couple of really decent new horror films today too.

    Lucky (Shudder)

The themes in this feel very close to the bone considering the events surrounding Sarah Everard, and it's as much a drama about gaslighting as it is a slasher film. It's very good at both these things though, and Brea Grant is quickly becoming one of the very best horror actors around.

    Come True (pirate)

It was sad this had such a dogshit ending but the rest of it, about a dream study that starts to go badly wrong, is really good. The dream scenes are brilliant and Julia Sarah Stone is great in the lead. Just maybe end it 5 minutes early.

i watched Lucky yesterday, didn't like it at all. Thought it was trying too be way clever for its own good. Maybe i missed the point totally on this one.

Also watched Bliss, loved it. What a crazy movie with beautiful visuals.

On a bit of a shudder watch with my trial ending in a couple of weeks, whats good on there to watch people ?

  7. so, i watched the In Search of the Last Action Heroes documentary yesterday, Really enjoyed, its gave me a few titles to check out but, am also after you guys recommendations you know them films that went straight to VHS. I've over the past couple months been watching a few like the Martial Law series which i thoroughly enjoyed, it also introduced me to Cynthia Rothrock, Jeff Wincott and Matthaius Hues so am hoping to check out more of their films. So, yeah any recommendations from the 80's to 90's or even 2000's Direct to dvd Gems would be much appreciated. Also if you could post any links or where to watch your recommendations that would be awesome as well, i don't want alot do i ha ha

Also in the documentary they said when going to a video store in the early 90's you had the sly and arnie section at the top, seagal and JCVD just underneath and below the direct to vhs action/martial arts films, anyone who got to experience this i really do envy you, this would be my heaven that.

  8. finished Oz this afternoon, what a ride! loved it.

First 3 seasons were fantastic, yeah the quality dropped around half way through the 4th season but, it was still great television. What's all the hate for Omar White?, i thought he was a brilliant character, also the first execution attempt on Cyrill was edge of your sit television, a whirl wind of emotions, the bit that got me was when he fastens the belt on the electrocution chair himself he 100% thought he was getting ECT treatment ... then the two phonecalls, the first teasing us, just brilliant i thought. The series finale was good up until the ending, that was piss poor, i would have liked to have seen Beecher character get a conclusion

Beecher vs Schillinger is one of the best feuds ever in tv, them two along with Cyril were my favorite characters throughout the series. Oh and McManus was a dick! i gave your podcast a follow as well @WyattSheepMask this afternoon, ill try listen to a few eps in the coming weeks!

  9. Sorry to bump the post but, i started watching Oz for the first time a week today. Am already half way through the 3rd season, to say am hooked would be an understatement. Its gritty, absolutely brutal and down right grim at times but, i can't stop watching!

the only thing i don't like is the Augustus Hill commentary every ep, i find that a bit tedious at times.

I've been watching Harper's/Harpers'/Harpers Island and I have to say, it's really ramped up to a mix of Scream and Prison Break, and the final stretch is brainlessly wonderful and entertaining.
Elaine Cassidy is absolutely wonderful and I love the couple of Cal and Chloe.
Everyone is a shit B movie version of another actor in boot cut jeans too, which is a fun game to play in matching them up, along with the murder/mystery that's going on.

what have you been watching this on pal? remember watching this when it aired on one of the bbc channels I think it was, great show

Slashers are my bag to. I recommend The Collector, Deep Red, Maniac Cop, Bloody Birthday, A Bay of Blood, Blood Rage, The Mutilator, Death Walks In High Heels, Don't Go In The Woods (so bad it's amazing) and to a lesser extent Sorority Row.

    cheers, ill check them out!

I watched Revenge on Shudder the other night. I thought it was great especially the last 20mins, very tense stuff . What let it down from being a all time classic for me was the length, could have done with maybe 15/20 mins shaving off

The Horror Noire documentary is superb. Pontypool and One Cut of the Dead are great takes on the zombie movie. It would probably be easier if you told us what kind of thing you are looking for.

to be honest I enjoy all types of horror, slashers being my favourite

  13. I had posted this in the dvd and film thread, this however is probably the best place to ask. So, any recommendations for shudder channel what too watch, took advantage of there 99p a month for the next 3 months offer

  14. watched Lady Bloodfight this afternoon on Amazon Prime, stars Amy Johnston who is more known in film as a stuntwoman on major films like captain America and also a multiple time world kickboxing champ. Anyhow if you loved old school Van Damme films especially Kickboxer and Bloodsport this will be right up you're street. Basically the plot follows the same path to Bloodsport, as Johnstone goes to Hong Kong to compete in the Kumite for females, and seeks training by a female martial arts master. Its basically a mash up of Bloodsport and Kickboxer, I loved it, like a say if you loved the old school JCVD you're in for a treat.
