  1. All I've read since I was in my teens are autobiographies and history books: never a novel.

Can someone recommend me some sort of horror novel? Is there like a benchmark book that sets the standard for the genre? Is there anything like a novel equivalent to a slasher film?

  2. Just reminded me of a classic. Three of us Barrow Islanders had been having a little feud with some Walney Islanders. We were only about 14, round one of the Barrow Island lad's houses and were discussing strategy for the forthcoming fight between the two sects. One of the Barrow Island representatives was a half Chinese lad that got really sore if his race was ever mentioned at all, but suddenly, the other lad's Dad bursts into our fight strategy meeting and gives it:

"Well, you lads will be all right with Chris on your side wont you..."

**queue a puzzled silence from us lot**

    "You know... Kung-Fu"

Complete with hand movements and everything. Tight to the poor lad's face. Hard not to laugh but feel bad for Chris at the same time in a situation like that.

  3. Gamera vs. Barugon (1966). More massive monster mayhem from the Far-East. The Gamera films take place in a separate universe to the Godzilla series, but it is again a universe in which giant monsters seem intent on destroying the coastal cities of Japan. This is the 3rd of the numerous Gamera films that I've seen, and a reasonably entertaining little addition to the genre. Some potential bandits go on an expedition to steal what they think is a priceless jewel, but really, its the egg of a giant monster! Who could've predicted that?

    They did the monster mash

Storyline aside, its always cool to appreciate the work that goes into the miniature sets and cityscapes which are always destroyed by the monsters, either in their initial rampages or during the showdown battle. Gamera is quite possibly the most badass of the legendary Kaiju, and he's certainly in his finest tail whipping form in this one. I've seen better in the genre, but I've also seen far worse. A decent little effort, and one that will quench the thirst of any giant monster junkie with ease.

Richie, I assume you've seen Un Chien Andalou? The one that Dali was involved with? That's old and surreal, you should like that. Also, check out some old Russian animation, the stuff around and after the revolution is good. I saw some at an exhibition once and it started from there.

There will be a horror film festival coming up in Leeds or Sheffield (can't remember which) later in the year that will be showing plenty of obscure stuff. You'd love it.

Haven't seen the Dali one yet, no, but I've read about it. Is that the one with the eyeball cutting sequence? Thanks for the recommendations, I'll get to them all as soon as I can while I'm back into one of my film watching phases.

I'd love to go to a horror festival like that, but don't have any friends who are enthusiasts. I'd feel a bit of a sad case going to something like that on my own.

on that subject, what's the most you've crammed into a single day/sitting? I keep planning on doing a morning till night type deal but it never materialises...ive done 4 on a few occasions.

I did 4 yesterday, not to mention about 5 or 6 episodes from the first series of Thundercats (1985). I'll be on for 3 again today.

  4. Ended up going for Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964). Fantastic offering from Ishirō Honda's iconic Godzilla universe, in which an unusual meteorite strikes Japan, awakening legendary monsters Godzilla and Rodan. Eventually a 3rd classic monster turns up in Mothra, and the 3 famous giants have to put their differences to one side to fight the invading 3 headed beast King Ghidorah.

Three headed monster come from space to fuck shit up

The movie assumes familiarity with all of the existing monsters apart from Ghidorah, so it was lucky that I'd seen all of the necessary earlier films in the franchise. This one was one of the best

  5. Fire and Ice

Saw this one late last night. After about 10 minutes of non stop close ups of the princess's arse I had to nip over to xvideos to cure my puff penis. Seriously, a large portion of this film is spent appreciating the shape of the royal posterior from just about every angle possible. The animation looked very smooth, to the point that it became pretty obvious that they'd used rotoscoping techniques (not that there's anything wrong with that, the fluidity of the body movements looked really natural and realistic). Good characters, good backgrounds, decent good vs evil storyline: good film.

Typical shot of the main character.

Thanks for the heads up on that one sir, I fully enjoyed it. Cynthia Leake, who played the princess in the live action filming should get an award for the performance of her rear. It was easily the star of the film.

Those three were brilliant too, thanks for sharing the links. How do you come across stuff like this? I'm only just beginning to scratch the surface of film, having only started to develop an interest in the past couple of years, but I don't think I'd ever find out about things like this if it wasn't for you gentlemen pointing me in such directions. Really interesting stuff.

I absolutely adore this movie. The imagery is just insane.

Pretty mind blowing isn't it? Do you know of anything else similar to that? I want more. It was by far the best thing I saw yesterday.

  6. Went for a quick change of pace to try to prevent the abstract animation films losing their impact. Unfortunately, I chose Gargoyles (1972). Nothing much to see here, very little in the way of storyline and plot, though it did deliver a fix of old school live action monster costumes (fuck CGI and all that). That's about all it was good for though, no real terror or anything else of much interest here. Sadly, I can't wave my arms around recommending this one as I have done with others lately.

Can't beat a good old monster suit though, can you?

Going back to the animation then, it was Twice Upon a Time (1983) next. Strange one this, a lot of the visuals and character designs look like they are aimed at young children, but with bits of blue language and some not too subtle sexual undertones dotted throughout, it's clear that toddlers are certainly not the target audience here. Interesting animation styles and interesting concepts of transferring through different worlds, controlling dreams, nightmares and time itself, all wrapped up in a blanket of vulgar and partially slapstick comedy. Thanks for the recommendation Rosey.

Good arrows also to Jobs, Keith and G. I'll be sure to check that lot out during the course of tonight and tomorrow. Cheers.

  7. I watched one like those when I was up about 2am watching Sky Movies one time. "Fantastic Planet". It was actually quite good. Very French and very weird. Very old too, made in 1973.

Fucking hell Baz, that's some really abstract stuff right there. I've seen some weird stuff in my time but that film just about ranks as one of the most surreal thing I've seen. For the firs 5 or 10 minutes I was contemplating giving up with it and finding something else to view, but within the half hour I found myself totally absorbed into and memorised by the worlds presented to me in the film. The art style was pretty unique, and somewhat creepy, and the musical score and overall audio tone seemed to echo the surreal and distant imagery.

    FantasticPlanet7_zps57468f01.jpg

Some of the strange visuals reminded me of Salvador Dali's artwork

Really good stuff, thank you very much for pointing me in the direction of something which I would have probably never seen otherwise. I was pretty blown away by that.

  8. Thought it was very hit and miss to be honest certainly worth at least one watch though.

I liked all of the stories, personally, and really liked the take no prisoners approach to being overly sexualized and violent. To me, it set out to be completely trippy and OTT, and it achieved it. The only part that I thought didn't really fit with the rest of it was the
