  1. I know Bobby Heenan retired from management in 1991, but how did they deal with it on TV? Was there a segment where he gave up the Heenan family, or anything like that?

Also, Rumble 92 aside, when did Haku stop wrestling on TV for the WWF? And why?

  2. Early feedback from this episode on Dr Who forums seems to be negative. I enjoyed it much more than the pirate one. And it's nice to see the girl from At Home With the Braithwaites is still alive.

  3. Have to say I loved this weeks episode. A bit freaky in places but excellent nonetheless. Thoughts anyone?

Yup, really enjoyed it. Far better than last week's episode.

I have deliberately avoided spoilers, so today's episode came as a pleasant surprise. One thing I was disappointed with was that the 'Old Control Room' was the Ecclestone/Tennant one. I was hoping for the old style one.

  4. Recent films I've watched include Unknown, Scream (first time I've ever seen it was the other week) and the Passion of Christ. I've written some pretty extensive reviews on the blog linked in my sig if you want to check them out.

Liked your Passion review, made me laugh. I agree with most of your points too, I liked the cinematography and the attention to detail, but I don't really get the point as to why it was made. They should have put Jesus over as a face more though. Plus the Hogan-no sell to all that whipping was outrageous, he may as well have hulked up during it! I can see it now, hulking up more and more after each whiplash until finally.. "YOU!!!!!!!!".

Cheers, I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  5. It was considered though. During the 60s, one of the writers (I'm thinking Bryan Hayles of Ice Warriors fame) kept trying to get a story called 'Doctor Who and the Nazis' done but it wasn't seriously considered.

  6. You may have noticed the little 'history lesson' I did about missing episodes in the Marco Polo review.

It's a crying shame (quite literally to some) that they thoughtlessly trashed these episodes - especially when you consider that every single episode of Blue Peter exists and that clips from Doctor Who survive because they were featured on shows with no replay value whatsoever.

In time though I imagine we'll see them all reanimated, thanks to the guy who recorded all the audios from the TV.

As for getting in to the early Doctor Whos - they are among the very best. I think the biggest barrier to entry is that they are black and white. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who won't watch anything black and white.

  7. That's me now finished reviewing the entire first series of Doctor Who - An Unearthly Child through to the Reign of Terror.

For anyone who has seen them, let me know if you agree...

    You can read them here

Are your reviews published anywhere or do you just do it as a hobby?

I just started it as a hobby because I enjoy writing and its more fun to write stuff like that than marketing material (which is what I've done professionally). The original brief for the blog was to serve as a reminder for me of what films I went to see throughout the year, but people have said they enjoyed reading them so I've kept going, and also started the Doctor Who project since there will always be people out there who like to discuss that.

Having said all that, I'd love to be able to get the stuff published, but dunno how I'd go about doing it.

  9. For those who are interested, I've started reviewing Dr Who from the very beginning as part of my review blog. It can be found Here

Christ, good luck with that! Hell of a hefty project. How are you going to do the missing episodes?

    Reconstructions.

The audio for every missing episode exists and companies like Loose Cannon have made reconstructions of each of them, mostly using off-air telesnaps (screen-grabs) of the episodes.

Overall it'll take me a good couple of years to do it, but I look forward to it.

By all means, let me know what you think of the reviews. So far I've done the first story, and I also review other stuff like films I've watched at the cinema etc.

  10. It should of course be mentioned that Nicholas Courtney - aka The Brigadier - died the other day. It's a pity he never turned up in the series since it returned; especially since he made an appearance in the Sarah Jane Adventures.

  11. Quatermass is great. All of the them, whether it's the old TV show from the 50s, the Quatermass Experiment, Quatermass 2 (with a rare sight of Sid James playing a serious roll) and Quatermass & The Pit.

If you like the old Quatermass TV show, you should watch some of the William Hartnell Dr Whos, and vice verca.

Just been to see Piranha 3D, which is one of the goriest films I've seen at the cinema. I enjoyed it. Unneccessary gratuitous violence, nudity and Christopher Lloyd playing an eccentric scientist. What's not to like!

  12. Ashes to Ashes and Grey's Anatomy finales.

Surprised there hasn't been an Ashes to Ashes thread - I loved the last episode. Took my a second viewing to fully get my head around it but it was superb.

As for Grey's Anatomy - i've said it before and I'll say it again - it gets a very rough ride because people assume it's a women's show, but it's consistantly one of the best shows coming from the US. The finale was awesome. Even better than last year.

  13. by no means am i a Doctor Who fan, and ive never read this thread, but i met a Dalek the other day, thought i'd share...

I have a replica Dalek exactly the same as that in my living room.

  14. The problem with the Daleks is that they are pretty much used up as menace in Doctor Who, and really, apart from Dalek in the Eccleston series, they have been since the 1960s.

But they are iconic and sell a lot of merchandise. And inevitably their name will bring in viewing figures.

The irony is that the Cybermen have also ran their course as well.

I thought the story was good, but it could have been a two-episode affair. The Daleks masquerading as 'Ironsides' bit was far too rushed. One thing I did like though was the sets. They came under a bit of flak by TV 'Critic' Jon Wise in the People on Sunday as being cheap, and I assume he meant the Dalek spaceship, but I liked it. Very retro.

Maybe the next Dalek story though can be called Sick of the Daleks.

  15. Smith's nothing like McCoy. Smith is a good actor.

As I've said before, the one thing I love about any Dr Who thread on this forum is the amount of cock-swinging that goes on with people name dropping things being mentioned in past stories (and it's 50/50 as to whether they are actually correct, at best)

I thought it was really really good. The thing about most of the Tennant specials last year was that Tennant's acting began to overshadow the scripts because the quality of the scripts were not that good. The Next Doctor and the one with Michelle Ryan were both poor. Water on Mars was very good. The finale on the other hand wasn't. The only thing that saved that (and saved it in a big way) was the acting by both Tennant and Bernard Cribbens.

Last night's story had a freshness to it and as arguably the best Doctor Introduction story there's ever been. None of us are emminantly qualified to discuss Power of the Daleks, but it beats all the other ones hands down. The Prisoner Zero thing was - as you would expect - a background complication. The real story was about the Doctor and Amy Pond. The best compliment I can pay Matt Smith is that he immediately came across as The Doctor.

The only bad thing about the episode was the theme tune. Didn't think that was good, but then I long for the return of the 5th Doctor's tune!

Also, as a side point, you can't say 'McGann' is dark and moody because of books. You can say that the 8th Doctor is, but not McGann because he didn't act in the books. And even then you probably can't because the books aren't really considered to be 'canon' by the people who make the TV series, or by 99% of the viewer base. Big Finishes maybe. Books, no. There's been too many contradictions.

  16. I watched Premonition last night on Channel 4 as it got a recommendation in the newspaper and the synopsis looked good. On imdb it only got 5.7 or something.

Well, I really enjoyed it, even though you could predict what was going to happen.

My only problem was that the ending was terrible. They didn't follow through on what had happened earlier in the film at all.
