I may be remembering this wrongly but I believe that Darsow was portrayed as a Russian sympathiser, and certainly, at first, was never actually portrayed as being Russian. I think the JCP announcers just neglected to mention after the first few weeks/months that he was actually a Yankie...Krusher Krushchev? Was he supposed to be Russian? If he was, that's the worst Ruskie accent ever.

A possible example is when WWE did their first Hell in the Cell match on Raw - Undertaker & Austin v Foley & Kane. WCW reacted by doing a DDP v Randy Savage cage match - the difference being, this cage had a roof on. While you may argue the concept of the roof on the cage match was created by Wargames - essentially, a WCW product - this really couldn't have been anything of a coincidence (IIRC, the Page v Savage match was decent, but looked totally low rent in comparison with HitC)...

There was - The Action Zone. It debuted in late 94, going with a main event of Bret Hart v Owen Hart in their first free TV match, and followed up with a terrificly awesome tag match pitting Ramon & Kid v Diesel & Michaels the next week (the third week, by the way, was Lawler v Bob Holly). This programme had original content at first, but eventually became another clips show - albeit one that I remember as being fairly enjoyable, and much of that was down to the interplay between the hosts Todd Petengill and Doc Hendrix (Michael Hayes). For the record, I seem to remember the first Raw that Sky Sports showed was from September 95, and featured a Sid v Shawn main event (which, famously, was one of the spoilers given away by Bishoff during Nitro's early days). It may or may not have been broadcast on a Thursday evening, before settling into a Friday tea-time time slot...
I know they stopped producing All American Wrestling in 94... Not sure if there was something else besides Superstars and Mania that ran in its place, though. All American wrestling on Sunday evenings all on Sky 1.I might be remembering this all wrong though.

Not quite - he was involved in the Wargames 3 on 3 on 3 clusterfuck at Fall Brawl 98, "teaming" with Hollywood Hogan and Stevie Ray against Sting, Lex Luger & Kevin Nash, and Roddy Piper, Dallas Page and The Warrior...1) World War III (November 1998) - DDP beat Bret to retain the US Title2) Mayhem (November 1999) - Bret beat Benoit to win the World Title Tournament3) Starrcade (December 1999) - Bret went to a no-contest with Goldberg in their World Title matchThose are the only times Bret wrestled in the last match of a WCW ppv. He wrestled on 8 other WCW ppvs in mid-card matches.

I've had stuff from them within a week. Whisper it, but they've got a 30 percent off sale on at the moment...ROHWRESTLING.COM-how long do orders take

While those three were the first ones available in the shops, Summerslam 88 was also made available as a mail-order only tape at the time. All were released in the run-up to Christmas 1990, and they no doubt made a killing on them.As for WCW, I seem to remember they came out early 92, as I got my hands on HH91 as an easter present...
I don't know this for certain, but the earliest ones I remember were:Hulk Hogan - Real AmericanWrestlemania's Greatest MatchesHigh Flyerswhich were all released at the same time circa 1990.Does anybody know answers to any of these questions..Q. What was the first WWF video release here in the UK?

If this was on Sky, this would be the biggest thing in the country right now, rather than half a dozen posts on this message board. Anyways, I'm undecided as to whether, in this role, Steve Bunce is either the most entertaining thing in the sport or the most annoying. It's almost car crash at times. Not too worry, the fight we all paid to see is almost upon us...setanta are shite at boxing if this was sky there'd be a good card before the main event..too much talking

I was once told that AWA aired on ITV (or possibly just LWT) late night in the early 80s, but it's quite possible that I or the person who told me could have been confused, drunk, high, or all of the above...
AWA in itself didn't as far as I know. However, Central TV (the old Midlands ITV franchise) aired a variety of tapes in the late 80s/early 90s including Professional Wrestling from Florida (from the first half of 1989), Global Wrestling (Florida version, not the later Dallas group), and matches from the AWA/World Class/Memphis partnership of late 1988.Early 80s World Class aired here on Lifestyle (an old satellite women's-oriented channel).Did any UK television channels broadcast AWA & World Class at all?...

Glad you actually got into this one! Well done, results far better written than the barely literate version on the Observer...

Yeah, I thought the venue had a great vibe to it as well. No beer, which isn't a plus (I'm figuring that's a military thing), and they were only serving tomato pizza when I was there, but everything else was kinda cool. Too far outside of town for my liking (Murphy Rec Centre, for instance, is about a 15 minute bus ride from Market Street, while Viking Hall isn't much further), but it was all good once I actually got there. I just finished watching the show I went to, which was the Morishima title win over Homicide (Feb 17th, 2007). I don't think it came across as well on DVD as live, though I figure these things rarely do...
I know what you mean we took the train to the FTC and during the day it was still pretty dodgy. I liked the venue though and the show itself is great. Im excited to see
In all honesty, I don't blame you for opting for a cab, because when I did the trip back into Centre City after the show this time last year it wasn't the most comfortable thing. The 45 minute ride back to the Frankford Transporting Centre was on a packed bus the entire way (and I had to wait for it for nearly an hour in temperatures of well beneath zero), and I then had another half-an-hour wait for another bus which took about 45 minutes. All the while travelling through places which hardly looked that savoury. Had I not already been to Philly a few times by then, there's no way I would have done it, but stranded Englishmen can't be choosers...
There was a bus out the front of the Armory!? Motherfucker....To be fair we got a Sudan not a taxi for our buck so I'm not too bothered, the driver was a good laugh aswell. You could have got a bus right out front of the Armory. Sure, unfamiliar country in the middle of the night and all that, but it's the type of thing that puts hairs on your chest...
BLK OUT in ROH and was surprised when Sabian & Mireno turned up aswell. Could be a good feud.

Savage was in the original bunch as well. The second batch had Jake Roberts and Big Bossman in, and there were surely more (possibly Davey Boy Smith and Mr Perfect, but I'm merely speculating). WCW released their own versions, and I remember them being spectacularly shoddy. Luger and Flair's were terribly bad, IIRC...
Not as much as Bossman, he wrestled every f'n week on those shows looking back now. Seriously he was ALWAYS on it.The old WWF tonka buddys released in 1989. Warrior, Hogan and DiBiase - where there any more?Just watching some old Wrestling Challenge Shows from just before Wrestlemania 7, and I would like to ask a question about it.Why didn't Duggan have a match on the PPV? He was being pushed very strong around that time (feuding with Slaughter, teaming with Hogan, etc)Thanks.
-
Odd man out, I guess. About the only logical opponent for him would have been Slaughter, and he obviously had bigger things going on. Just about everyone else on the roster was involved in the show, but there's always going to be a few that missed out (eg. no Paul Orndorff at WM3). Duggan did, however, do commentary on the opening match, so he still got a payday...Just watching some old Wrestling Challenge Shows from just before Wrestlemania 7, and I would like to ask a question about it.Why didn't Duggan have a match on the PPV? And very good he was at it too. Someone dropped the ball on that lad somewhere...Maven ranted on the microphone for ages mid-match

Duggan also has a three second win over The Mountie. I'm sure, however, there's a quicker match (non WWE) that finished in a submission or a knockout...perhaps one of the wacky Japanese promotions or something...?
Bret Hart pinned The Mountie in an announced three seconds at MSG one time.
I dont think there's an "official" record, but i seem to remember Tazz being beaten by someone, possibly Jerry Lawler, in 3 seconds, sometime in 2000.Also whilst im here, does the record for fastest match in the WWE still stand with the Rock pinning the Big Boss Man in 4 seconds at Survivor Series 98??

I liked Juno well enough, though didn't come away from it thinking I'd just seen an Oscar winner. That said, Ellen Page is very, very good in it, and man, woman or child, you'll fall in love with her. A film with Michael Bleuth, George Michael Bleuth, CJ Cragg and Dwight Schrute in it can't be bad, and this isn't. But I didn't come away from it thinking it was going to change my life or anything (and you can actually argue that it's a pretty god-damned irresponsible film in some respects in the way the main character deals with her situation)...
-
This film's showing on Sky Premiere at the moment, and I watched it the other night. Found it very funny. Sure, it's not going to get you going back to it in the same way that Office Space will (must have watched that about 7 or 8 times, though the fact that it seems to be on somewhere or other every month adds to that), but there's more than enough in there to want to watch it more than once...IdiocracyThis film was released in 2005 in the states but due to bombing in the cinemas was only released over here on DVD last year. I was really looking forward to watching this with Mike Judge (Office Space, Beavis & Butthead) being at the helms and Luke Wilson leading. The film deals with Luke waking up from a military freezing experiment hundreds of years in the future when human-civilisation is seriously dumbed down. The set pieces are great fun to look at, such as the mountain ranges of rubbish, and the coffee shop brothels, however it all appears a little cartoony and its very VERY obvious that a budget cut had been delt Judge with some fairly sub-standard effects. Also the narrative/ script is very dry. It pans out in a very linear fashion and the story itself is boring as hell (i.e. Wilson trying to get home by getting to a forgotten time machine). However, it does have some good laughs in there, and some of the observations are funny as hell. Its a shame this movie is not as good as Judge's other stuff, if your looking for comedy gold you won't find it here.

I'd very much recommend going out of your way to see it. All of the undercard matches had something worth getting a look at in them, and the Rumble was...well, put it like this, Meltzer said it was probably one of the best they've ever done. See for yourself, you'll not regret it...
Is that possible to do? I'd say it's worth a watch.Could someone give me a brief spoiler free review of the Royal Rumble please? Worth a watch? Thanks very much

Well, not that I like to pimp my own stuff, but I did the trip from NYC to Philly this time last year, and it's pretty easy. Take a look at this...Kinda tempted to do it again soon...Ok so I'm going to be in NY for a week from the 13th and I am thinking about going over to Philly for the PPV. Realistically, how easy is it to get there? Also, ROH have a TBD Northeastern date penciled in for the night before. I'm guessing it won't be NY as the 6th anniversary show would have just taken place but what is the likelihood of a NJ show?

Jeff Warner, a Portland, Or guy. Used to team with Art Barr in the Big Juice and Beetlejuice tag team, and headed for Turnerland at the same time as Barr got there as the juicer. Finisher was a chokeslam on a running opponent, and was pretty cool to see in squash matches. Had a decent look and charisma from what I remember, but in-ring skills weren't fantastic. Got a WWF try-out in late 91, IIRC, and may have had some pedigree as a boxer...I'll be wearing a back brace by 3pm today, ain't looking forward to it all. But..Does anybody know anything about a "J.W. Storm" in WCW during 1990? He was pushed like the second coming of Big Sid on there.Cheers.

Wrestlefest 94 is the tape that must be recommended for this type of thing, containing an AWESOME Bret & Owen Hart v Rick & Scott Steiner match...
No, the Harts had turned face in early 1988.The WWF had a habit of doing face v face tag-team matches on the videotape releases around that time. Just before Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart split, there was a match between them and the Legion of Doom which was on something like World Tour 91.
Weren't the Hart Foundation still heels at that point? Probably not - my grasp of chronology is fucking awful.
Cheers for the info, i'll have to dig these out later to watch. I'm actually surprised they had more than the one match. As I don't think WWF did a lot of face v face matches back then.
Yeah. At least two are available on WWFE DVD/video. They did one on the April-ish 90 SNME, which is on the Bret Hart DVD (and is a bloody excellent match), and there's also one from around 89ish on one of the Coliseum Video releases (might have been one of the World Tour vids)...Did the Hart Foundation and Rockers ever have any other matches against each other, apart from the one that features on the new Shawn Michaels set when the top rope snaps ?

IIRC, it was a bit of a piss-take on strikes by officials in "proper" American sports (specifically, baseball I believe). I can't recall exactly the exact circumstances as to why the WWF refs walked out, however...
I can recall Harvey Wippleman and perhaps Tom Pritchard being Scab Refs for a few weeks. I can't remember the outcome of the situation though.
^Anyone? What's the full story behind the WWF's referee strike a few years back? Who were the replacement refs brought in? I know Steve Lombardi was brought in.
