  1. think it was made perfectly clear that what they were doing was poorly imitating things they'd seen on TV

As far as research, like i said in the earlier post, all he had to do was read a copy of Foleys: Foley is Good and maybe pick up a copy of the show NBC (maybe) did on backyard wrestling. I'm not saying he has to watch tapes, god know Louis Theroux didn't have a clue, but he should have got some feedback from wrestling fans not just backyarders.
But he was doing a documentary on *backyarding*, and the kids who seek acceptance by grouping together in this way, not about how it's connected to CZW or ROH or whatever. The two may be intrinsically linked in our eyes (because they are linked, obviously) but this particular show was more about the kid's need to feel part of something, not about wrestling. It dealt more with the sociological aspects, than anything to do with professional wrestling. I feel like I'm going round in circles here.

There you go then. And to say BYW can't be related to Pro-Wreslting from a non-wrestlings fans point of view is laughable because it was actually someone who never watches wrestling who texted me and told me to check it out. Hence, first thought 'oh look, wrestling on CH4'.

How somebody showing a bunch of idiots taking it upon themselves to copy something they saw on TV damages the industry is beyond me, particularly when the industry in question actively discourages it. It's in the same vein as Daily Mail style rants about banning video games because they encourage shootings, or the way every late 80s murderer used to be linked with a "video nasty" they'd seen once. Of course there's a connection, but that doesn't lay blame at the door of wrestling any more than it did at Marvel when I used used to run around my house with an oranges bag on my head and fall off of the sofa as a small child. The bottom line is: the kids are doing it of their own volition, and the legitimate wrestling industry frowns upon it. Both these points were clear, so I fail to see how any damage was done.
  2. Every single reference to what the kids were doing was called "back yarding" or some variation thereof, I don't recall them ever being referred to as wrestlers (unless they were talking about themselves), I think it was made perfectly clear that what they were doing was poorly imitating things they'd seen on TV. The participants came out looking like absolute idiots, a huge theme of the documentary was that it was a childish thing to do, something that they grew out of, and scenes such as the fat kid being chokeslammed into thistles served only to highlight how babyish they were being, pale, childish imitations of real wrestlers. I totally didn't make any connection between what these groups of deeply misguided were doing and what goes on in shows across the country, in fact I think it was made pretty clear that the legit scene looks down on backyarding. The one part I'd question was the scene with the two kids headropping like it was going out of fashion in the ring at Dropkixx. The wrestling aspect is maybe being overthought, in all the previews, the participants were being compared to Fight Club, the theme, for me anyway, was unhappy people looking for acceptence, albeit in a strange form. When it comes down to it, there's no way in hell this has done any damage to the British scene, in fact I doubt anyone besides people like us who obsess about anything remotely related to wrestling will even remember anything about it this time next week, it's not like it went out prime time on Saturday night. And it was a good documentary, as it's obviously evoked a lot of emotions, and I for one found it enjoyable watching. As far as research, maybe the guy did only make requests on forums and download a few videos, but what was he supposed to do, sit through hour upon hour of NOAH tapes? He was making a documentary about the way kids with low self esteem group together in this way, not some Dave Meltzer style analysis comparing them to ROH or whatever indy fed some of you probably hoped would get a little airtime.

  3. Basically I agree with the general opinion on this forum, I am dead against backyard wrestling, not sure how it can be considered a sport there's also obviously no technique to any of the moves, they're obviuosly just trying to copy moves they've seen on TV, hence why they look bad.Just been over to the forumUKBY and basically people are praising the backyard wrestlers which is worrying. Like this one:

first of all, i'd just like to say that everyone off the ukbyw board who featured on it(burch, selbs,NLW, the entire welshfest crew, frosty etc) that you should all be really proud, i thought you all came off really well on it,and you looked really mature and sensible, and you definatly did the community justice.seeing all of you on tv, coming across so strong and serious(non of you looked like fools) it made me really proud of you in some kind of way. and i also thought that burch and channel 4 pulled off a good looking angle, with it being quite emotional and suspenseful for the casual fan- burch retiring, and then not due to his love for the sport, good stuff

  4. The biggest joke out of all of this is the prick who made the documentary and the cocks at CH4 for actually showing it. He clearly wasn't a wrestling fan and clearly has no idea of the implications this could cause to the future of British wrestling.Maybe he should have done some proper research and looked at how badly BYW has tarnished wrestling in the US first, and while hes at it pick up a copy of Foleys second book and read the part about BYW there. Wanker. To steal a line from Moj i hope he gets cancer of the testes.

WTF?It was a cracking documentary, and showed BYW for what it was. It did no harm to the British wrestling industry, unlike past programs ie: Faking It.
  5. I found it interesting the post where someone said they would like to de-promote backyard wrestling. This just isn't going to happen. You might as well tell all the smart marks on the internet to not be so critical about pro wrestling than to try and tell these stupid twats just how damn stupid they are. I tried it a couple of years ago with a couple of columns (shill: these are still on my website) after I was approached by a Norfolk backyard group about commentating on some of their videos. Although I got a great deal of support, I also got a ton of shit from the backyarders. You guys might as well go and talk to a brick wall rather than try to talk these twats out of backyarding.

They tend to get talked out of it themselves, by puberty*Actually the feeling I got from the end of the program was that the amount of legitimate wrestling schools in the country is leading to the demise of the backyarding scene, leaving the likes of the XHW kid lonely figures.*excluding those fuckwits that were linked here a while ago, who were in their 30s, although I didn't actually see any evidence of pubic hair, I'll assume it was there..
  6. This is just what British Wrestling needs, seriously. This is showing how stupid and dangerous BYW is. Parents are watching this, and now they might take control of what the little retards are doing. This documentry has really took the piss good style. This has proved to everyone that BYW is a joke, and now people can see that BYW is not Wrestling, its kids being egged on by UKBYW forums.

    Exactly~!In the words of a certain sparkle-mouthed wrestler, that's not a bad thing, that's a good thing.
  7. There are far too many hilarious things to comment on.I was disturbed by the "federation" that had a roster of two, it looked like an excuse for experiments in sado-sexuality, but now that the frumpy ginger girl is going to wrestling school, will the fat boy she hits with light tubes have to resort to sitting alone in his room and hitting his winkie with a stop sign? When they were sitting on the floor and playing with the wrestling figures, you could have cut the sexual tension with a pizza cutter.Awesome how these little cock-ends turn into squealing babies the moment something goes wrong, there was a brief but delightful half second of legitimate hysterical crying coming from the back of the car during the segment where the kid was being driven to hospital. Funny how he claimed to proudly tell anyone who listened that he was "a wrestler" yet had to make up a story in the emergency room. The most cringe making moments though, were the cod-american accents adopted by everyone participating in the child-like chaos. Let nobody ever knock Vicky from Eastenders ever again. As far as people saying this topic should be locked, or bitching that the program was even shown, I hardly think it was good publicity for the little fuckers. They may all be excited by it now, but in a few years they?ll all be hideously embarrassed by their involvement. The saying about giving someone enough rope is extremely applicable here. I think there was more than enough distance between them and the legit British scene to do any harm, it was hardly on a par with Faking It.Tremend television, tremend.
