  1. I watched Miles From Home last night.

It's a 1988 drama about a couple of brothers who run the family farm. Hard times happen and the bank inevitably comes to take it away from them. The elder brother (played by Richard Gere) does not take this well and a little bit of mayhem ensues.

It's not a life-changing film or anything, but it's a real hidden gem and I enjoyed it a lot. There were quite a few Reagan-era films about the struggle of farm and ranch folks in the heartland and this is certainly one of the better ones.

It's beautifully shot and a few other famous faces (like Helen Hunt and John Malkovich) pop in for a scene or two.

  2. Put a coat on Bruce, you lunatic! Glad you had a good time, Harmy. Had a couple of mates at the show who said it was a belter despite the weather - and one of them losing their wallet (which has since been found and turned in).

And yeah, hopefully just a bad cold but I dunno. Bad feeling they'll also postpone the Prague show.

UPDATE: the show in Prague is postponed, as are the two scheduled for the San Siro after it. Gutted, but what can you do?

  3. The big man has had to cancel the show tonight in Marseille due to vocal issues/doctor's orders.

Basically, his voice is fucked and it became apparent at soundcheck that he couldn't suffer through a set. It makes Prague on Tuesday look tenuous, which is shit since I've got a mate flying over for it and we've got hotels booked etc. but I just hope Bruce is feeling food again soon (ideally as soon as Tuesday, but hey!).

I know he's a marathon man and all, but doing regular three-hour shows at his age in all sorts of weather conditions and with that much travelling involved was bound to catch up with him eventually (especially after his health issues last year).

  4. Maybe one for On Topic, but I didn't see a relevant thread there.

  5. So... how was everyone's season, then?

Given all the talk of it being one of the 'most exciting title races in recent memory', the inevitability of City winning it yet again just took away any sense of drama.

I really am bored by City now. However, as a Newcastle fan, I will be heartily cheering them on in the FA Cup final so that we get a spot in the Europa Conference League.

Speaking of Newcastle, it was a mixed season for us overall. It was great to be in the Champion's League for the first time in twenty years and thrashing PSG at home was a real highlight. Knocking Sunderland out of the FA Cup (in Sunderland) was also sweet, considering their years of doing us in prior to their relegation(s).

But we were completely done in by an unprecedented injury crisis, as well as Sandro Tonali's ban for betting offences. Considering how many players we had on the treatment table, Eddie Howe and the lads have done very well to finish seventh and on the verge of a second consecutive season in Europe.

We definitely need to have a squad clearout this summer and get some new, quality players in. It will be hard with FFP and all that, but I'm confident we can continue to be there or thereabouts as long as we have the likes of Isak, Gordon and Bruno available, as well as a couple of additions.

It started with the obvious "ohhh yeeees" and "my undertaker" but it evolved in to just randomness to try and cause embarrassment. Once brought a new girlfriend home "ohhhhh, are you going for a meeeaal". My mates fell about laughing. It was like his go to for cheap pops with the kids. Top notch fatha stuff.

    What a worker!

Few years back I watched them all (or the ones I could find) and found so many good to great films. This movement is a huge favourite of mine too. Highly recommend diving into this list.

I bookmarked the Letterboxd version of that a few weeks ago! I've seen quite a few of them, but there's some obscure gems in there that I'll be adding to the list for sure.

Looking at it makes me nostalgic for the days (about 20 years ago now) of randomly discovering films like Prime Cut, Scarecrow and Straight Time thanks to TCM and, later, MGM HD.

The Mummy - the 1999 one. What a fun old romp. Maybe I’m being the old man yelling at clouds, but these sort of films seem very rare nowadays. A funny, big budget summer blockbuster with charismatic and preposterously good looking leads, where you can clearly hear the dialogue and there’s actual lighting used in darker scenes. No mumbly talking and murky visuals. Fucking hell, I’m actually pining for the days of Stephen Sommers films. 4/5

It's not exactly the same kind of film, but I had similar feelings after recently rewatching Men in Black for the first time in an absolute age. Just a really entertaining, funny blockbuster that didn't take itself too seriously and was over and done with in 90 mins. Great family fun.

I also happened to see Marathon Man for the first time in yonks and liked it for different reasons. The Hollywood New Wave/New Hollywood is my favourite era of filmmaking ever and, while this isn't a stone-cold classic or anything, it has a lot of the things in it that I love so much about that particular era.

When the biggest companies on the British scene can't stay afloat paying their talent and venues based on their audience, is there really a business here anymore?

Probably not a 'boom period' like there was a decade or so ago, but I'm willing to bet there are still plenty of companies (and wrestlers) making alright money on the UK indie scene.

The likes of Megaslam, for example, tour the country pretty much full-time and always seem to draw healthy houses.

Genuinely can't believe it the main episode of this season I was into and what a absolutely pointless topic in honesty. If you look at most the topics over all the seasons this wasn't even tame it was fucking nothing whatsoever. He's a legendary figure in this world for the shit he did in ecw but Christ the entire world knows he's a drunk that was his entire fucking foundation the entire career.

I do like this show and documentary talking about the awful shit within the industry that have been kept quiet and brushed away but jesus this one was a waste

Conversely, I thought it was really good.

They had the right talking heads in the form of his wife and kids, Fonzie, Sabu, RVD, Tod Gordon and the like and I thought it did a commendable job in showing just why The Sandman was as popular as he was.

Granted, there wasn't much as far as major revelations, but I didn't know about him spending tens of thousands and 'roids and HGH for his WCW run and subsequently becoming a violent domestic abuser.

I ended up feeling particularly bad for his son Tyler, who not only missed having his dad around but also seemed to resent being roped into the angle between The Sandman and Raven.

  11. I've really enjoyed this series. Like Pat said, the Chris Colt episode was a highlight and I agree that more episodes on obscure figures would be welcome.

In saying that, I am really looking forward to the episode on Sherri Martel. Just seen the trailer and they have her ex-husband appearing as a talking head, as their run of getting the right people to tell the stories continues.

  12. I'm sure many have already read it, but there's an NBC article on what Vince McMahon is up to these days (besides talking to lawyers).

Apparently he's going to his barbers, eating at nice restaurants and going on holiday (where he comes back with cats as gifts for people). Per the article, he's still in contact with Trump, Dwayne Johnson and John Cena.

Here's what Janel Grant's lawyer Ann Callis thinks of that last part:

Callis also said there have been no settlement talks, despite McMahon believing it will end up being settled before going to trial. They're still adding to their mountain of evidence, speaking to past victims etc...
