  1. What MMA magazines do folks here recommend? As I should be in a position to see all major UFC events from next month onwards, a bit of reading would supplement things nicely.

    Cheers my lovelies.

Fighters Only magazine is the biggest selling UK publication, and usually carries some interesting interviews, fight reports and predictions etc.

To be honest though, you should find all you need by visiting both MMA Junkie.com and Sherdog.com (the site, don't go near their forums), with MMA news.com offering some decent articles too.

    Oh, and UFC.com obviously.

    Thanks, David. :)

  2. I am currently downloading the latest episode of TNA IMPACT. I have not tuned in since they declared 'war' with the WWE, ... the show that started with that cage thing that no one could climb out of, and Hardy came down.

Has it got better or worse since then, just so I am prepared, if it could possibly get any worse?

Dead not obvious who you are.

Someone who sleeps all night and works all day, I reckon. Someone who goes shopping every Wednesday and has buttered scones for his tea.

  3. I remember watching WWF programming as a kid, I'm sure there was once a title change on a non televised show, which was announced as shock breaking news on something like All American Wrestling.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Bret Hart Vs Ric Flair perhaps?

    Bret Hart Vs The Mountie?

Wasn't the Flair to Hart title change televised, though? I can't remember which show, but there's footage of the match on the Hit Man DVD. I suppose there's a chance the bout was filmed but never broadcast, but my feeling is that the above query relates to when the Mountie beat Bret for the IC title a couple days before the '92 Rumble.

  4. Pardon my institutional racism there, it is Puerto Rico, not Mexico.

I thought you meant he was working in Mexico ASWELL as the WWC/Puerto Rico. Though admittedly I didn't see any news of Steiner south of the border. :)

  5. Where's Scott Steiner at? There were some rumours flying that he'd be back into TNA soon, but as yet no Big Poppa Pump. And yet they are releasing a doll of him...

He's the current WWC Universal Heavyweight Champion down in Puerto Rico.

Yes, Steiner is the Champion of the Universe. Quite fitting for Big Poppa, is that.

  6. Reading Bret Hart's book at the moment, though I took a break yesterday for the new PowerSlam.

I'm not all that arsed about Bret's early years, but I bet Hitman will get very good indeed when the WWF comes calling...

  7. Does anybody have any articles/press releases/general mentions of WWE's so-called 'banned words'?

Not 100% sure this is what you're referring to, but this is a list of words Vince McMahon prohibits WWE announcers from using, according to James Guttnam in his book World Wrestling Insanity:

    Belt

    Strap

    Feud

    Backstage

    Acrobatics

    Me/I

    War

Insider terms such as Blown Up, Shoot, Rib etc

    Performance

    Choreograph

    International

    Interesting

    House Show

    Title Shot(s)

    Pro Wrestling

    Pro Wrestler

  8. There is far too much Tennant love in here; I always thought the bloke was fucking awful. All gnashing of teeth and Mockney accent and smug hyperactivity... I never could figure out why he was supposedly "the best Doctor ever". He made me cringe on a weekly basis, frankly.

Smith, on the other hand, has done OK this series, and I'm sure his best is yet to come.

  9. How did WWF explain having Tazz and JR hit eachother over the face with glass jars in August 2000, and then in December, have them commentate Rebellion together?

    They didn't.

As it was only an unimportant UK PPV, WWF didn't feel the need to bring up JR and Tazz's feud. It's not like it's the first time (or last) that two bitter enemies have become working partners or even friends in the wrestling world.

  10. NJPW would have probably stipped Hernandez of the belt quick-smart. They went a bit "funny" after a TNA tag-team won their tag-belts. Was it "Beer Money"? They refused to acknowledge them, stripping them of the belts, then changed their minds and did claim them as their champs.

    I thought as much.

Didn't like three different TNA teams hold the IWGP Tag titles in 2009? I heard that New Japan were annoyed and didn'g recognise Beer Money as champs at first, but seemingly after a while they just allowed TNA to get on with it. I'd suspect they would have been far stricter if the Jr. Tag title was being passed around between guys who obviously exceeded the weight limit.

On a related note: where does the name International Wrestling Grand Prix originate from? Is it a governing body of some sort for NJPW?

  11. Do New Japan still regularly enforce strict weight limits for their Jr. Heavyweight division? Only I'm watching Lockdown '09 and during the 3-way for the IWGP Jr. Tag Team Championship, Tenay and West were making out that NJPW's Juniors were the equivalent of the X Division, hence why Hernandez was in the match.

I'm guessing that was typical TNA hyperbole, but had they booked LAX to win the belts, would NJPW have recognised them as champions? Ultimately it doesn't matter as LAX didn't win, but having a near 300 lb guy in the match seemed rather daft to me, suspecting that Japan still takes weight limits and stuff seriously.

  12. Yeah, Judgment Day '03 was a dual-brand PPV, but the last "B-level" one till the concept was axed in 2007.

I always thought that either Goldberg had some kind of limited dates deal where he only had to appear at certain PPVs in 2003, or that because Bad Blood was the following month and the first (U.S) Raw-only event, WWE didn't want to overload JD with too many Raw wrestlers and matches, and felt that certain programmes such as Goldberg vs. Jericho should be held back till June.

I don't know for sure, but they're my theories.

  13. Apparantly Flair refers to himself as a 21-time champion, though there's a couple of International World title runs in there, aswell as a handful of NWA belt switches that either weren't recognised at the time, or aren't anymore.

I'm happy enough to acknowledge the International title as a legitimate world championship, simply because of Rick Rude.

  14. Where is there a list that shows every single unrecognised WWF and WCW title changes?

By the way why does WWE blantatly refuse to acknowledge Flairs world title win at Uncensored 1999? I mean considering he held the belt for a month untill dropping it at the next PPV kinda seems a bit silly.

I didn't know WWE don't recognise Flair's title win in the (very good) main event at Uncensored '99. Actually, it's weird that for years now Flair has always been referred to as a 16-time World Champion when, if you count all the brief switches and unrecognised stints he had in the '80s, it must top 20.

The wrestling business is MEANT to over-exaggerate stuff, not play it down. Reminds me of the story I read in The Death Of WCW where Tony Schiavone said there were LESS fans in attendance at the Georgia Dome than what there legitimately was. Baffling.

  15. You may want to also consider Trans World Sport, which also covered WWF on Eurosport.

Did they? I used to watch Trans World Sport all the time on Channel 4 on Saturday mornings 15-odd years ago, I never recalled any WWF coverage. Perhaps it was even before my time.

  16. If WWE is aiming itself at an audience which requires parental guidance, why are they encouraging British viewers to vote in the General Election?

WWE still realise a massive percentage of their audience is adult, despite the so-called "PG Era".
