  1. Couple of new episodes of the show. First with MMA journalist and broadcaster Brad Wharton where we talked about pretty much every MMA/pro wrestling crossover that there has been. Link here - http://martinhines.com/2013/06/08/interest...9-brad-wharton/

And secondly with Des Delgadillo, who has been blind since he was three years old. Now 20, it's a great show hearing how he perceives wrestling as a massive fan - http://martinhines.com/2013/06/21/interest...des-delgadillo/

  2. Your impression of Nigel McGuinness was an unexpected pleasure.

Another British wrestling book is welcome. I'll probably order that when it comes out. Can't believe she tracked down Casper from Faking It.

Thanks mate. From the samples I've read, the book is actually very good - you can tell it's been written by somebody who clearly really likes British wrestling, but isn't naive enough to be swallowed into all the seedy stuff sometimes associated with it. That Faking It episode was terrific.

  3. Did you listen to that 3 hour mailbag show Meltzer and Mike Sempervive did? It was excellent. I sent a shitload of questions in as well, which he answered, so that was pretty fun. Its mental how he can sit there and answer questions in massive detail that people were sending in minutes before he started recording.

He really is a top boy. I interviewed him for my dissertation (which you can read here if you get bored - http://martinhines.com/2013/01/12/my-wrestling-dissertation/ and he pretty much gave me all the quotes I needed, which was a massive relief as I only managed to secure the interview about three days before my deadline.

If he was a journalist in any other field other than pro wrestling he would be feted as one of the best journalists of all time.

  4. I think he came across as somebody who felt very entitled, and was almost shocked that he never made it to WWE, despite the fact he a) doesn't fit their mould and b) even when he got offered the gig it was screwed up mostly in part to his lifestyle and wrestling choices he personally had made.

Also, from a film perspective, there was no light and shade at all, it was just all darkness. Every minute of the film, apart from the clips of him wrestling consisted of Nigel a) looking into the camera moaning b) listening to people talk about how great he is and then c) moaning again.

At no point in the film, rather than at the end, was there anything other than him looking down. Did a minute go by without him talking about how he had failed, or how disappointed he was that he'd never made it. I respect that that was the entire point of the film, but perhaps it would have worked better as a ten minute short rather than an hour and a half of exactly the same thing.

  5. Episode five of Interesting People Talking Wrestling with NFL broadcaster/journalist Mike Carlson, talking all sorts, including:

What similarities the NFL and wrestling have

    His thoughts on the XFL

Thoughts on the concussion issues currently being talked about hugely in both wrestling and football

    Some of his wrestling impressions

    Some old school WWWF chat

His favourite wrestlers and matches of all time

His admiration of the female Japanese wrestling scene in the late eighties/early nineties

Which NFL athletes would make good wrestlers

If anyone in US sport could be compared to Vince McMahon

How The Wrestling Observer turned him into a serious wrestling fan

All the info on how to listen/subscribe is here: http://wp.me/psVQF-6I

  6. Latest episode of Interesting People Talking Wrestling up with Barry Blaustein, chatting about a lot of topics including:

Who he still keeps in touch with from the film

    His friendship with Jesse Ventura

His first hand account of the legit fight between Vader and Paul Orndorff back in 1995

Why The Undertaker did not feature in Beyond The Mat

Whether New Jack could ever have made it as an actor

His thoughts and memories of Dennis Stamp

    How Paul Heyman

  7. What's the consensus on Richie George? I'd never seen him play before this tournament, and thought his entry would just be a gimmick, but he's through to the semi-finals. He's not a world-beater at the moment by any means, but obviously he's pretty young - he's six years younger than his dad was before he even started playing darts properly. Any of you connoisseurs see any potential in him? Particularly impressed with his doubles under pressure.

  8. Victor from Big Brother would definitely do it as well. He always does podcasts and stuff like this, and a wrestling one would be right up his street.

Asked him on twitter earlier and he's up for it, that'd be entertaining. Might see if I can do that one in person, would be an event for sure.

  9. Who else is on your list? Thought about this a bit, Rufus Hound has said on several shows he's a fan (maybe just of the older stuff) He was asked who he thinks he looks like and answered Hulk Hogan deadpan. Jack Whitehall was/is a fan did some training as well. I'm sure I went to a TNA show where they announced maybe an olympic cyclist in attendance. Pretty tricky to interview but I was told Amy Winehouse was a fan, any truth to this. There was the bloke from this morning on take me out who said he collected Hasbros, which suggests he's a fan of some sort. Billi from Big Brother of course. Johnathon Ross did a match with Lucha Britannia and Lembit Opik did stuff with Welsh Wrestling. Who else is there?

Paul Nicholson, the darts player is a big fan. Alex Corbisiero, England and London Irish rugby player. Mike Carlson - NFL pundit over here. There's quite a few but a lot try to keep it under wraps as they find it a bit embarrassing to admit!

I'd love to find some scientists/philosophers who admit to loving a bit of grappling. I was delighted when I managed to reference Roland Barthes in my dissertation as he wrote a great essay about wrestling once. Like Winehouse though, he might be a bit hard to track down.

  10. That's an excellent idea for a podcast. It's always cool to find out that someone you've seen on TV on and off for years is actually a fan. Was it Kieron Dyer who was on a tv show a few years ago where he talked about being a wrestling fan, and specifically lusting over Torrie Wilson? Think he was shown going to a house show too.

Yeah I remember that - it was on a documentary wasn't he? I remember it was the first time I'd ever heard his voice, and was amazed at how high pitched it was.

  11.
