Your impression of Nigel McGuinness was an unexpected pleasure.
Â
Another British wrestling book is welcome. I'll probably order that when it comes out. Can't believe she tracked down Casper from Faking It.
Thanks mate. From the samples I've read, the book is actually very good - you can tell it's been written by somebody who clearly really likes British wrestling, but isn't naive enough to be swallowed into all the seedy stuff sometimes associated with it. That Faking It episode was terrific.

Did you listen to that 3 hour mailbag show Meltzer and Mike Sempervive did? It was excellent. I sent a shitload of questions in as well, which he answered, so that was pretty fun. Its mental how he can sit there and answer questions in massive detail that people were sending in minutes before he started recording.
He really is a top boy. I interviewed him for my dissertation (which you can read here if you get bored - http://martinhines.com/2013/01/12/my-wrestling-dissertation/ and he pretty much gave me all the quotes I needed, which was a massive relief as I only managed to secure the interview about three days before my deadline.
Â
If he was a journalist in any other field other than pro wrestling he would be feted as one of the best journalists of all time.
-
I think he came across as somebody who felt very entitled, and was almost shocked that he never made it to WWE, despite the fact he a) doesn't fit their mould and b) even when he got offered the gig it was screwed up mostly in part to his lifestyle and wrestling choices he personally had made.
Â
Also, from a film perspective, there was no light and shade at all, it was just all darkness. Every minute of the film, apart from the clips of him wrestling consisted of Nigel a) looking into the camera moaning b) listening to people talk about how great he is and then c) moaning again.
Â
At no point in the film, rather than at the end, was there anything other than him looking down. Did a minute go by without him talking about how he had failed, or how disappointed he was that he'd never made it. I respect that that was the entire point of the film, but perhaps it would have worked better as a ten minute short rather than an hour and a half of exactly the same thing.

The Last Of McGuinness is one of the worst documentaries I have ever seen encompassing any subject and any genre. One of the most bitter and joyless documentaries around, with very little joy in there at all.
-
Could a gent possibly direct me to that Wrestlemania stats thread? I'm making a Wrestlemania betting preview show this week for my work, and it would come in rather handy.
-
Episode Six of the show with Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins which covered the length and breadth of Corgan

Interview with Barry went well, managed to ask your questions and he was a gent. This weeks episode was with Paul Nicholson, the darts player. All info here on how to listen and subscribe - http://bit.ly/XJnbK2

If he kept in touch with Dennis Stamp!
Yeah deffo keen to ask about Dennis Stamp. Also want to ask him whether he genuinely thought New Jack could have made it in Hollywood. How different life could be for everyone if he had made it.
-
Interviewing Barry Blaustein (writer/director of Beyond The Mat) tonight for my podcast.. Anyone got any questions for him?
-
What's the consensus on Richie George? I'd never seen him play before this tournament, and thought his entry would just be a gimmick, but he's through to the semi-finals. He's not a world-beater at the moment by any means, but obviously he's pretty young - he's six years younger than his dad was before he even started playing darts properly. Any of you connoisseurs see any potential in him? Particularly impressed with his doubles under pressure.
-
Never heard the expression wanting to 'ball' someone before. Superb.
-
Victor from Big Brother would definitely do it as well. He always does podcasts and stuff like this, and a wrestling one would be right up his street.
Asked him on twitter earlier and he's up for it, that'd be entertaining. Might see if I can do that one in person, would be an event for sure.
-
Who else is on your list? Thought about this a bit, Rufus Hound has said on several shows he's a fan (maybe just of the older stuff) He was asked who he thinks he looks like and answered Hulk Hogan deadpan. Jack Whitehall was/is a fan did some training as well. I'm sure I went to a TNA show where they announced maybe an olympic cyclist in attendance. Pretty tricky to interview but I was told Amy Winehouse was a fan, any truth to this. There was the bloke from this morning on take me out who said he collected Hasbros, which suggests he's a fan of some sort. Billi from Big Brother of course. Johnathon Ross did a match with Lucha Britannia and Lembit Opik did stuff with Welsh Wrestling. Who else is there?
Paul Nicholson, the darts player is a big fan. Alex Corbisiero, England and London Irish rugby player. Mike Carlson - NFL pundit over here. There's quite a few but a lot try to keep it under wraps as they find it a bit embarrassing to admit!
Â
I'd love to find some scientists/philosophers who admit to loving a bit of grappling. I was delighted when I managed to reference Roland Barthes in my dissertation as he wrote a great essay about wrestling once. Like Winehouse though, he might be a bit hard to track down.

That's an excellent idea for a podcast. It's always cool to find out that someone you've seen on TV on and off for years is actually a fan. Was it Kieron Dyer who was on a tv show a few years ago where he talked about being a wrestling fan, and specifically lusting over Torrie Wilson? Think he was shown going to a house show too.
Yeah I remember that - it was on a documentary wasn't he? I remember it was the first time I'd ever heard his voice, and was amazed at how high pitched it was.
-
Please get Victor off Big Brother 5!
That's a good shout! Got a few names in the bag already, but if anyone can think of some interesting folk who are wrestling fans that'd be great
-
Just started a podcast with the premise of getting celebrities/people who have done stuff with their lives who are wrestling fans, and learning about why they're wrestling fans etc. First episode here with Anthony Ogogo http://martinhines.wordpress.com/2012/12/2...-anthony-ogogo/

Couple of new episodes of the show. First with MMA journalist and broadcaster Brad Wharton where we talked about pretty much every MMA/pro wrestling crossover that there has been. Link here - http://martinhines.com/2013/06/08/interest...9-brad-wharton/
Â
And secondly with Des Delgadillo, who has been blind since he was three years old. Now 20, it's a great show hearing how he perceives wrestling as a massive fan - http://martinhines.com/2013/06/21/interest...des-delgadillo/
