  1. Depends on your definition of "heavy."

To me, heaviness incorporates an element of catchiness. It's not about making the lowest, loudest, fastest or most disturbing sound possible, it's about creating the desired mood, whether that's aggression, despair, hatred or whatever.

At the moment, on that basis, I'd be likely to go for "Lashed to the Slave Stick" by Nile. Ask me tomorrow and you'll probably get a completely different answer.

  2. I co-promoted a sepultura show in london, also not bragging or anything....

I knocked back a Sepultura show in Glasgow. Also also not bragging or anything...

Anyway, nobody has addressed the issue of Dreamweaver or History of a Time to Come!

For my money, History had better tracks in terms of one-off, four or five minute, head down, full on thrash. You can listen to any track on the album and it stands on its own merit. Dreamweaver, on the other hand, is a great album when taken in its entirety. It's the kind of album you listen to from start to finish or not at all.

I was shocked (shocked!) to hear Skyclad on Radio 2 of all things the other day.

Big fan of both bands. Some of the most intelligent lyrics and wordplay in metal.

Anyone else have specific playlists for different gym days, or is that a personal peculiarity?

  3. Exodus' 'Bonded by Blood'

    Doubleplus good!

Can't say I like the stuff with the new vocalist. Zetro fucking slayed, but the rest of the band seem to think he was a complete cunt. Tempo of the Damned is another bloody good album. One or two low points, but Sealed with a Fist, Shroud of Urine, Scar Spangled Banner, Culling the Herd and War is my Shepherd are great tracks.

    Any love for Vital Remains?

  4. 'Tallica:

    For Whom the Bell Tolls

    One

    Disposable Heroes

    Maiden:

    Recorded:

    The Trooper

    Powerslave

    Aces High

    2 Minutes to Midnight

    Sunlight on Steel

    Running Free

However there are some tracks that you need to experience live if you want to appreciate them fully. Foremost are Fear of the Dark and Hallowed be Thy Name.

    Anyway...

At the moment I'm listening to a lot of Deicide. Bastard of Christ, Father Baker's, Bible Basher, Scars of the Crucifix and The Gift that Keeps on Giving are on heavy rotation.

I'm also enjoying a lot of Sabbat and Skyclad at the moment. Really enjoy the depth of some of the lyrics.

Melechesh are fucking awesome. They tend to be labelled as black metal, but they're not really. They have that raspy vocal style, but there the similarity ends. Catchy death metal heavily influenced by Middle Eastern music - much more so than Nile.

  5. I can heartily recommend the Nokia N900.

Cool apps include the console emulators (pair them up with the TV out cable and you're onto a winner), Qik (live video streaming from your phone plus automatic uploading to Youtube, Facebook, Myspace and wherever else you put your videos), gPodder (podcatcher - get all of your favourite podcasts without syncing with your computer), zootube (Youtube frontend - again, the TV out cable is your friend!), and a devilishly addictive little game called Angry Birds.

And you can even download EasyDeb, which lets you run "mainstream" Linux apps not designed for phones!

  6. Submitted for your consideration: Veronica Freeman of Benedictum

    v4.jpg

In an era of shitty opera metal bands, Benedictum are something of a breath of fresh air. Veronica's previous experience was in a Dio tribute act, and she has a powerful traditional metal vocal style. None of your poncing around in a flowing gown squeaking about summer rain, or nicking material from children's films..

  7. You're all entitled to your opinions, of course, but how the fuck you managed to get this far along in the thread without mentioning Doro Pesch (45) from Warlock is beyond me.

  8. Debate in the sense of head to head verbal argument with the BNP won't work. They use similar persuasive techniques to the evolution deniers in the States - they just blatantly make shit up. They put some bullshit fact or figure out there, like 99.79% of council houses in the UK are occupied by asylum seekers, and go straight on to some other topic before anyone has a chance to call them on it.

In the wider social discussion, the fuckers don't stand a chance. Given time to prove their claims false, anyone of any intelligence could demolish the BNP. Unfortunately, the people who vote BNP aren't very intelligent.

By all means, I think that we need strong free speech legislation in this country and that people should be able to hold and express any views that they like. If the practice of those beliefs is to the harm or disadvantage of anyone else, that is grounds for regulation. So specifically, the BNP as a registered political party is not allowed to restrict membership on the grounds of race, just as an employer isn't allowed to racially discriminate in hiring practices.

  9. I can see why people are surprised at the Butcher coming in above Adam Shame. Adam was a deserving champion who had some fantastic matches and had his run with the belt finish far too early due to a horrible injury. I think what may have edged Butcher ahead in many peoples' minds is the simple fact that wherever he goes, he's instantly insanely over. He can walk into a hall where nobody knows him and walk out as everybody's favourite wrestler. It's remarkable.

  10. The Butcher has been one of the most consistently awesome things in Scotland. Credible physique, awesome selling, believable aggression. I reckon he deserves such a good placing. So how much does Scotland rock then?

  11. You know, fun as this has been, it highlights an important point.Someone had an idea. Some might think it's a great idea, some might think otherwise, but at the very least it had some significant upsides. The fans in Coventry get to see workers that they might not have seen before, guys from different promotions get exposure to a new audience, introductions are made, networking is conducted, deals are done and British wrestling gets that little bit stronger. Now someone's taken that idea and exposed it to the public before it was prepared. This could have been done very nicely - good marketing, good PR, press coverage, the lot. Instead it trickles out to a handful of fans on a forum.People say that the internet damages wrestling. Wrong. Idiots damage wrestling. The internet is just a tool they use to chip away at its fraying edges.:(
