    Because the Cardiologist said so.

Less than 24 hours after having the Astrazennaca jab her heart rate soared to around 170 BPM and she was struggling to breath. When tested the increased heart rate was due to her blood clotting, advanced further by the heart beating faster. Quite the cycle. Blood thinners sorted it.

I don't think anyone is going to dispute the order of events. It doesn't mean that the vaccine caused the clotting though, and the cardiologist isn't in a position to say that it did- as has been mentioned, you'd need to compare outcomes from the millions of vaccine recipients to the background rate of blood clotting in the population.

I've got Christmas spends and want to invest in some graphic novels. I've not collected anything for years now and an wondering if people have read and would recommend civil war 2 and the marvel rebooted Star Wars series?

Open to suggestions - Fan of Batman, Cable, Wolverine, Punisher...

    TIA

Civil War 2 was not well received and was criticised for giving characters unbelievable motivations and taking non-sensical actions. I read the whole thing as it was published but had to look it up just now to remind myself of what it was all about. You can do much better.

I've not read much of the rebooted Star Wars stuff except Doctor Aphra, which I've thoroughly enjoyed. She's basically an amoral Indiana Jones in space- even more than Han already is. It features characters who are essentially evil versions of R2 and C3PO who regularly steal the show.

Has anyone been reading this series. Thus cover has really caught my eye. What's the story like?

    Transformers 26 (1)__scaled_600.jpg

It's ok. I think it suffers by comparison to the previous continuity and it really took a while to get going. Perhaps they were a bit over ambitious in terms of scope as they immediately launch into quite wide ranging stories with loads of characters in different groups and settings. The sister comic, Transformers: Galaxies is telling smaller, more personal and more self contained stories, which I think might have been a better way to go while they establish the new universe.

It's not bad by any means, so give it a go and see whether you like it. Any competent Transformers content is better than none, right?

  4. I don't understand people wanting to be more cautious over potential long term effects (for which there is no evidence at present) of a vaccine, but are willing to take their chances with the long term effects of Covid (for which there is already plenty of evidence.)

Full disclosure, my opinion may be influenced by the fact that I'm currently sick with the virus and paranoid about whether I'm going to be feeling the effects weeks, months or years later.

I appreciate that vaccine development has been fast tracked and I'll admit that I haven't done any digging into the subject but is there any reason to believe that any significant number of people have suffered any genuine adverse effects from any vaccines of any kind?

  5. For anyone within range of Hackney Wick, I can't recommend the Hogless Roast highly enough. They usually operate as a touring food van and I first came across them at a vegan market at Coventry's Fargo Village. They were giving away free samples of their hash brown bites and basically everyone who tried one went and bought a full order (the hash brown bites are sprinkled with Tubby Tom's Dragon Salt, which has since become a bit of an addiction for my girlfriend and I.) We now go out of our way any time they are anywhere nearby.

Speaking of Fargo Village, anyone in Cov who hasn't tried Dirty Kitsch needs to get down there and have some of their vegan fried chicken. I'd recommend getting a side of garlic mash with it. Delicious!

Just a request before it starts, but can we keep to spoiler rules in here? With it being days between Japanese and English language uploads, it could be an awkward one. It's my first G1 and I'd like to talk about it, but avoid spoilers at the same time.

    Seconded!

I usually fall a way behind and try to read some of the discussion later. It's more or less possible to skip back and not read posts made after the last show I watched, but what always scuppers this is the points totals being edited retrospectively to include later shows.

  7. You're unlikely to have any option but to go into the office or leave the job unfortunately. You barely have any rights in the first 2 years of employment unless you can show that your treatment is unfair because it disadvantages you as a result of you being part of a protected category (disability, ethnic minority, religion etc.)

The government is about to launch a campaign encouraging people to return to the office and threatening that they may be easier to sack if they work from home, so unfortunately things are not looking encouraging for workers wanting to work from home unless it's also something the employer is keen on.

There's been a recent reboot of the comics line, which ended MTMTE etc - I've tried it, and got bored after a few issues. Happy to hear why I should give anything a second chance though.

It's not terrible, but it's lacking the sense of fun that MTMTE in particular had and very few of the (massive) cast of characters have been defined in anything other than very broad strokes. The spin off Galaxies comic does a bit more character work and there was a recent story about Cliffjumper living in Bumblebee's shadow which felt like a step in the right direction. The main comic is currently very much about Cybertronian politics, which I assume is building up to the Autobot vs Decepticon war, but it suffers from the fact that everything seems quite transparent- even secret plots are not kept secret from the reader, so there is not much intrigue.

  9. If you're all in on Lost Light, I would 100% recommend going back to the start of More Than Meets The Eye before you continue. There are storylines and mysteries paid off in the final issues of Lost Light which had been teased or set up since very beginning of MTMTE. It's a very rewarding read and really impressive given that it's been a single writer through the entire run.

Having recently come across the 'Metal' series from DC. What is the correct order to read them in? And what's the concept?

Are they to be read before a certain range of issues? If I'm correct in what (admittedly) little research I've done, they're to be read before Scott Snyder's Justice League run. Is it the same for other titles too?

I've been out of the loop the last several months or so, these have seemingly cropped up on me out of the blue.

I think you're right that Snyder went on to justice league immediately afterwards. I don't know if there's anything particular to read in preparation. If I'm honest I found Metal a real slog but a lot of people seemed to enjoy it a lot.

  11. The Vision (2015) by Tom King is a 12 issue standalone series which I can't recommend highly enough.

The Unbelievable Gwenpool (2016) is a bit longer but can be enjoyed in isolation and is far better than it had any right to be given its LOL-Deadpool-origins.

I'm struggling to think of anything too Garth Ennis-y that I've read but if you've got any time for Warren Ellis, he did a 6 issue standalone series called Karnak, which I really enjoyed and which I don't think needs any prior knowledge going in.

EDIT: The original run of Exiles from 2001 might be worth a go. It's like a Marvel Comics version of the old Sliders tv series with a team of heroes hopping dimensions and having no impact or interaction with the main continuity. As a result it's quite free and easy with offing characters left, right and centre.

Has anyone just jacked in what they were doing for whatever reason and took up a new career?

Has anyone thought fuck it and trained up in anything new? I'm only 32 so still young but nervous at stepping out of my comfort zone, especially now with a mortgage to pay.

I have, sort of. I went to university to study drama, but a bout of depression in my third year meant that I mostly sat around in my pants at home for about 6 months and emerged at the end without a degree. After the rest of my classmates graduated, I bummed around for a bit doing temp data entry and admin type roles until I got a job in the civil service.

As one of the few young men in an office full of middle aged women, I ended up being the de facto IT "expert" because I was "good with computers." This mostly meant that people would come to me and I would use the help function to find out how to change Outlook settings or Google Excel functions. Eventually, this kind of innovative thinking got me promoted to team leader and I started to think that I could make my way higher in the Civil Service, enjoying the flexi time and generous holiday allowance before retiring on a pension which would go some way to making up for the uncompetitive wages.

Along the way, my continued Googling began to edge me closer to actually being quite good with Excel, and not just by the low standards of the office. When I realised that my team were having to make the same amendments to standard letters dozens of times a day, deleting sections of text and either pasting in new sections or typing them by hand, I started to learn how to record and edit macros, allowing me to partially automate a few things here and there.

Unfortunately, a few factors meant that at the same time, I started to get more and more dissatisfied with the job. The government's austerity measures meant that our pay was frozen and yearly incremental rises became a thing of the past. Changes to the pension scheme made a long term civil service career seem less appealing. Recruitment bans meant that the prospect of promotion seemed remote. At the same time, I was having to manage several people who mainly seemed motivated to get away with doing as little work as possible. Depression took hold again and I started to neglect some of my responsibilities, but I was still well thought of by management because of my previous good performance.

When my manager moved on, however, she was replaced by someone else who hadn't been around when I'd been doing well and couldn't see why I had a good reputation. In my first monthly performance review, in November 2015, she told me that from what she'd seen, I wasn't pulling my weight.

I knew that she was right, but I couldn't imagine a future where I was motivated enough to turn things around. I suspected that there were other duties which I'd not been properly attending to which would eventually come to light as well. The situation was probably salvageable if I'd been in a healthy state of mind, but I wasn't. A few days later, I handed in my resignation and went back to sitting around in my pants at home for a few months.

After a while, I ran out of money and went back to working for an agency, who got me a job in July 2016 working in the warehouse of an engineering company. It was a reduction in pay compared to my Civil Service job (17K instead of 20K,) but I wasn't in a position to be too picky and it did at least seem like the kind of company where progression was possible and where they were keen to develop their staff.

I got a couple of opportunities to show that I knew what I was doing with Excel and that I had a bit of potential. When a new materials planner role was being created on the materials/purchasing team, I was moved from the warehouse into the office for a couple of weeks to be an extra pair of hands and cover until they could bring someone in to do it. They ended up offering the job to me without having to interview. It came with a 5K payrise, and soon after, I was handed a further 3K payrise. I couldn't believe it- I was now on 5K more than I had been in the Civil Service, I was enjoying work a hell of a lot more and my boss seemed genuinely interested in helping me to progress, with a view to eventually succeeding him. On top of this, I was now being actively encouraged to pursue my interest in Excel and VBA and to build up my skills in that area.

In Summer 2017, I got a message from a school friend of mine who knew what I was doing, asking how much it would take for me to consider moving jobs. I told him that I was happy where I was and that I'd only been there for a year, but that a significant pay rise of 5K or so would be something I'd struggle to turn down. He brought me in to interview for a couple of roles and the company ended up offering me a 40K a year contract as a data analyst! I was astounded, but kind of apprehensive because I'd been treated brilliantly where I was and thought a lot of my boss and the company, but I would be a fool to turn down a 15K salary uplift. When I went to my boss to explain the situation, he came back from senior management with an offer of a 35K contract. I would have stayed, on the basis that starting somewhere new would be a risk and that I wasn't really sure I was qualified for the job my friend had put me up for, but the other company counter offered, adding another 5K to the salary and that was that.

Looking back on the past 3 years or so, it's crazy to think that I went from what had basically become a dead end, low paying job that I hated, to earning more than double in a job I find interesting. I've been so incredibly lucky that I ended up somewhere it was possible to progress, lucky that people there saw some potential in me and that I happened to have picked up some skills I could develop and which had some value in the job market. I'm not sure what advice I can give as I know that it doesn't work that way for everyone and that I'm particularly fortunate as these things have more or less fallen in my lap, but my experience since jacking in my Civil Service job has been hugely, hugely positive.

Previously, I could never imagine having a job that I actively enjoyed. I used to try to work out what the absolute minimum I could live on was and so how many hours I could reduce my working week to. I am so much happier now that I'm not spending my working week making myself miserable. That sounds obvious, of course, but I always used to see work as just a necessary evil to survive. Don't get me wrong, it's still not the highlight of my week, but I don't dread it now. I know that at some point, depression might strike again and I'll have to find some way to deal with that, hopefully without sabotaging my career, but for now I'm happy.

Apologies for all of the salary talk. I know it's a little bit vulgar, but I thought the details were necessary.

Anyone know the job guy in Tyson T Bones first match? He looked nails, must be something for him to do.

His name is Jake Constantinou, a 3-0 pro MMA fighter who was also Andrade Cien Almas's opponent in Almas's Smackdown debut. He was trained to wrestle by Gareth Harris at From The Ground Up School of Wrestling in Leicester.

  14. The current run of the Vision by Tom King is absolutely fantastic. I think there are 2-3 issues left as he has been contracted by DC to write the ongoing Batman series.

I'll also agree with the praise for Transformers MTMTE. Excellent series.

Has anyone been reading Ringside? It's ostensibly about pro wrestling although there's not been much of it featured so far.

  15. I'm making my way through Progress from the start on Demand at the moment. In terms of storylines, will I miss anything if I stick to the Chapter shows and skip Endvr, World Cup, Download and so on? If not, are any of the non-Chapter shows essential viewing for other reasons- great matches, special appearances etc?

  16. Over the last few years my feet have shrunk from an 11 to a 8 and 3/4 so I did not know my size which is why I used to feet measuring equipment at the store which they told me I was a 8 and 3/4.

I don't understand why nobody is questioning this element to the story. I mean, what the fuck? Did you slice your toes off?
  17. I didn't put any nominations in, but this would have been near the top of any favourite movies list for me. I've probably seen it more times than any other film- I loved this as a kid and still do now. It's a kids' movie where half of the cast end up dead, which was pretty mind-blowing at the time. If I came to it fresh, having not been a fan as a child, it wouldn't get near my top ten, admittedly, but as a slice of nostalgia, it's brilliant. The soundtrack, regardless of whether you watched the film as a child or not, is absolutely top notch, too.

  18. When ever an account that's been quiet for years suddenly goes on a mong spree, I always assume it's someone's 2nd account. Who wakes up one morning and thinks "hmm, haven't posted on the UKFF in 3 years, think I'll pop on now and be a massive bender".

    It's not Family Guy PMSL.

On a completely unrelated note, any BritWres experts know who was behind the PWA company based in Hull?

I think PWA was run by Urban Warrior of Shitarse 50 fame. Either that or one of his former trainees.
