  1. Does anyone know why Pillman, Z-man and the Road Warriors wore tassled armbands at WrestleWar 90?

I can't read the writing on them so I'm not sure if it's some stupid Herd-era merch or an actual tribute to someone who died.

They were Sting armbands, Sting had been injured at the Clash of the Champions and couldn't win his first world title from Ric Flair (as was scheduled for WrestleWar '90) and a bunch of top babyfaces were showing their support by wearing the armbands. Lex Luger did a quickie babyface turn at the 11th hour and challenged Flair in a thrilling match (and another at Capital Combat '90 which further enhanced Luger's 'choker' status when it came to winning the big one). Sting returned and won the belt at Great American Bash '90.

It's a bit like in D.C. comics after Doomsday had killed Superman, all the other Justice League characters wore armbands with the iconic "S" logo in their own unrelated strips.

RING OF HONOR, BOOKER ADAM PEARCE PART WAYS

By Mike Johnson on 2010-08-15 19:41:49

Ring of Honor and booker Adam Pearce parted ways earlier today in what sources what told me was a decision made by ROH owner Cary Silkin. Pearce took over the book for the promotion in October 2008 after the departure of Gabe Sapolsky.

One source has told me that Delirious, with heavy input from Jim Cornette, will be handling the booking for the company going forward. I have not 100% confirmed that but it is making the rounds.

I have left word for both Cary Silkin and Adam Pearce and hope to get some sort of official comment from either when possible.

Wow. Imagine being a fly on the wall in a booking meeting with Cornette and Delirious. At least JC could probably get more sense out of him than a booking meeting with Vince Russo and Dixie Carter but either way.

  3. The Dixie Carter one was on before Raw on Monday. It's not really funny or anything, but it's really informative and she does a decent job of defending TNA's problems. One that stood out was when questioned why they give away big matches on Impact, she answered that why are the fans moaning, would they rather pay for it? Which is a way i've never thought about it before.

So unequivocal proof that she hasn't got clue fucking one about the wrestling business then. Well done Dixie.

  4. I think I also thought of Jay as the babyface because he's the older one, where you can play the younger Mark as being "led astray".

Like he was by Chris Daniels eight years ago, when he joined The Prophecy.

    Continuity AND consistency of character.

I would go for El Generico or Steve Corino as my left field choice! El Generico because he can have a main event caliber match against pretty much anyone And Cornio could play a heat drawing heel and carry a feud with his mic skills!

If it's only 2 or 3 months I suppose but I just don't 'feel' Generico in that role, and I wouldn't have Steve Corino in that role in a supposedly forward thinking workrate-minded promotion. As far as Hero taking the belt, I don't think he's the worst choice but it'd be a crime to break up the Kings at this point, there's plenty of mileage in them yet.

Jay Briscoe and Bryan Danielson remain my choices!

  5. I just think he'd be accepted and an instant main event level star which they're really gonna need soon, whereas Strong would feel forced, Richards would feel like a placeholder, Aries a rehash etc.

I think I also thought of Jay as the babyface because he's the older one, where you can play the younger Mark as being "led astray".

  6. Having a think about who can replace Tyler and fact that if you can either go with Davey (who's possibly leaving if not working the fans, and if he is going will feel like a temporary solution) or Roderick Strong (who if he wins will have the stigma of only having won the belt because the champion was leaving). Giving it to Hero or Claudio means breaking up one of the best acts in wrestling at the moment (suppose they could make Hero champion and put Claudio with Ares). Austin Aries has been there twice and in a promotion with longer title reigns than most, it doesn't feel like five minutes since Aries was champion anyway.

So, my left-field choice - Jay Briscoe. Sick of the Briscoes really (though not as much as I used to be when Gabe was cramming them down everyone's throats), I've long wanted them to break up because I think Jay's good enough to be at that level for ROH. I'd have Mark go heel (back in the day I'd have put him in Sweet and Sour) but I'd not do the traditional turn, I don't think anyone would really believe a Briscoe vs. Briscoe feud at this point, I'd just have Mark join the Kings or the House of Truth and have Jay tell him he loves him, he's his brother, but fuck he's hanging around with a bunch of morons. Down the line you know someone from one of those factions is gonna get into a feud with Jay over the belt and then you have the dynamic of Mark being on the opposite side but having the brotherly connection, and if they never feud, it's easy to put them back together in a year or two's time if they're still around.

All that said...isn't a certain someone's TV/iPPV no-compete up around the time of Tyler's farewell? Hmmmm.

  7. I'd love it if his idea of remaining inconspicuous was to walk around in full Kane regalia, just sans-mask.

On a CHIKARA show I watched recently, Player Dos defended the Young Lions Cup. About two matches later, a guy the same height and same build but wet, topless, wearing jeans (i.e. full-on post-match "I'm a pro-wrestler" attire) was walking about...carrying the Young Lions Cup. Dudes don't even try any more.

  8. Why couldn't he just come out as Mark Callaway?

Kayfabe dill, Kayfabe! The same reason Kane didnt come out without his mask for the Owen tribute or the Pillman tribute.

If he didn't have his mask on, how would anybody know it was him?

  9. What ever happened to Larry Sweeney ? He seemed like a fella really headed in the right direction a few years ago?

Didn't he go Mental a year or so ago?

Oh yeah, forgot about him. Turns out he is bipolar, he stopped getting booked by ROH after a few incidents.

He had some problems but I think he's ok now. He was brought back as a surprise for the first ROH iPPV, Final Battle 2009 but the audio was messed up and re-dubbed for DVD without him. You can see him sitting at ringside with Dave Prazak though, and from all accounts he got a really god response when he showed up.

  10. How far back is TNA on Bravo?

Flicking through Sky earlier and Bravo 2 were showing Impact. They still had a 6 sided ring!

Thursday's Impact (US airing) airs first run Saturday nights on Bravo, repeated on Sunday night and the following Saturday morning. Bravo 2 shows TNA from about 2008 (I think) on mornings and afternoons.

  11. I get what you're saying but I just find it lacking where you have Yoda and Mace Windu who basically suspect him to be evil but he just comes across like a nice amiable 9 year old. I actually quite like Jake Lloyd in it but he's just too nice to convincingly be the guy who's supposed to grow into Darth Vader for my taste. Call it sledgehammer of plot if you will but not making more of a point like that just leaves things too vague and underwhelming.

I also don't think we're "supposed to be shocked" by it either given that pretty much everyone watching, even in sequential order, are aware that he's destined to become Vader but there's barely anything to suggest he's got it in him. A different actor, some better dialogue and a tighter, more concise script would have helped that I think.

I dunno, maybe it comes out more in II and III, I've never got round to watching those properly.

  12. They Live - Roddy Piper machine gunning aliens. Class.

Ferris Beuller's Day Off - Five times I've put this on and I still haven't made it all the way through. Apart from the montage in the museum with instrumental Smiths in the background, one of the most overrated films I've ever encountered. The principal has been alright but Ferris and Cameron are two of the most unintentionally dislikeable characters I've ever come across and their acting is horrendous. Shame really because Breakfast Club is ace.

The Phantom Menace - Watched it properly for the first time in eleven years. Decent ideas messily produced. Ewan McGregor is completely wooden and Anakin Skywalker in no way comes across like the underlying sinister bastard he's supposed to be. Too long as well for the story being told, should have been tighter. And Jar Jar Binks? I don't hate him like everyone else does.
