  1. I'm deeply saddened by this. I learnt about Stew's passing on Twitter and immediately started welling up, which I rarely do even for relatives.

I knew he'd been in poor health recently but was sure he'd make a full recovery. Sadly, that wasn't to be.

I'll always remember him as a humble, polite and utterly decent person who loved his wrestling, and if anything, he was able to leave us with his favourite promotion - New Japan Pro Wrestling - arguably being the hottest promotion around.

    Farewell amigo.

  3. Because if he didn't hate them, he wouldn't publish the article.

Bull. SWM has been writing controversial columns for years, for better or worse. His page has always stood out as his own piece of the magazine, aside from the other opinions.

If you had issues with the comments, fair dues. But it's not Fins comments.

But he's the editor, Mo, and therefore responsible for its content. Come on, you're a writer, you must understand this process.

Somebody contacted me about this. Just to clarify, I'm not LEGIT. I don't know if he's another writer at the mag or not but it's not me.

  4. I'm coming towards the end of completing my 'best matches of 2010' like (I've only got a few more shows to get through, once they become available), but my list is looking like this. For MOTY contenders, I'd say that the ****3/4 and ***** matches are the ones I'd nominate (matches in date order):

    *****

The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels WWE 28/03/2010 *****

    ****

  5. Overall, a disappointing season for me. There were a few highlights, and Bellator XXXIII was my favourite show, but there was too much mediocrity and it all felt very flat. If they can't strike a deal with Strikeforce, they might not return for another season because I'm sure they're losing neat sums of money and there are no signs that'll change anytime soon. If they do call it a day, they have a good six/eight guys who can go elsewhere and be quite competitive, and Lombard, Askren and Conrad are the three I think UFC would be most interested (the latter not so much because he's really good, but rather because he's mates with Brock and that's just the way these things work sometimes).

  6. That was a great performance. My enjoyment was slightly tempered by the fact the batting was led and dominated by a trio of South Africans, but still, England won! It's always great to see the Aussies get stuffed, so it made the result even sweeter.

Expect politicians to take credit for the result within the next 24 hours. :(

  7. 14 was decent.

The Askren/Thomas submission was ridiculous. I can see what the ref was saying, but i can't remember another time a fight has been waved off like that, nuts. It was looking to be a good scrap too, Thomas looked dangerous from the bottom. Can't really say much for Askren at this point, wrestling looks great as expected, submissions are there too, but this was abit of a non-fight.

Pat Curran's right hand was a nice way to start the night too, stiff little punch.

At this point i dont see Huerta having much trouble taking home the 155 tourney though.

Next week's show is gonna be a cracker.

The season hasn't really clicked into gear and started producing fights as good as we saw during season one, but to be fair, it's still early days.

Re: the Thomas stoppage, I don't think it was that bad a call. Ryan's face turned purple and he did look out just as the ref called it off, and I'm sure the fighter and his corner will at least understand the ref's point of view.

Now if he had just done what I think Herb Dean did a few weeks back and lifted the arm to see if the fighter in peril was able to Hulk up, then there wouldn't have been an issue.

EDIT: Oh, and in keeping with the Hendo mockery from the Strikeforce thread, LOL x 1,000,000 at Huerta. After appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and having a few good fights, he got really big headed and asked UFC for pay-per-view share deals (which only a select few fighters have, and this despite Huerta never headlining a pay-per-view and not having proven any kind of drawing credentials). Now he's working for Bellator probably making a lot less than what he'd have made had he just stuck in UFC. Tool.

  8. Our economy wasn't doing well either pre-Iraq or pre-global crisis hit. Brown, quite literally, spent the family silver, or in this case gold, Even now he still hasn't got the common decency to tell us how far in the hole we are by adding the PFI numbers onto the national debt figures.

Well, they're going to come on balance sheet once International Financial Reporting Standards are implemented across the public sector over the next couple of years.

By then, of course, it will be a Conservative problem.

  9. Many congratulations Mo, do you have a name yet?

Thanks geezer. Yep, we've gone with Owais. It's a fairly obscure name but it sounds nice to us so hopefully he'll agree when he's older.

Time flies so quickly, can't believe it's almost 9 months since Lucas was born and tomorrow he goes to his one day a week nursery for the second time.

9 months already? Time does fly. It won't be long before he's walking- that's when the games will begin!

  10. How did the second birth compare to the first in terms of workrate? Did it capture the magic of the first or was it more of a 6/6/97?

The selling wasn't as good as 17/2/05 but the pacing was better which resulted in a stronger finish. The epidural control segment was particularly engrossing. :nerd:

In all seriousness though, congratulations Momo, you fertile individual.

Me - the genetic jackhammer of the UKFF~!

  11. Just as a suggestion, I think we need to split this award into two next year; one for WWE matches and another for the rest. None of the nominated matches would even crack my top twenty of the year and of others here and at other boards who've watched lots of stuff outside the WWE, they've probably got no more than two WWE matches in their top twenty, and nobody has a WWE match as their MOTY.

Edge vs Undertaker at SummerSlam and Hardy vs Bourne at Cyber Sunday only got 5 nominations each.

So it's not like the followers of wrestling other than WWE and TNA have a massive mountain to climb in getting their favourites in the final top 10 choices.

Having two weeks to post nominations is more than enough time for all regular UKFF visiters to list their favourites but it seems some (including you Mo) didn't post any nominations.

Yeah, but because this award is always so dominated by WWE matches, people like myself don't bother with this. I could've nominated a bunch of non-WWE matches but it wouldn't have made a jot of difference. Clearly, others who also watch matches from non-WWE promotions having the same attitude doesn't help, but even if great matches get enough nominations to reach this stage, they'll still receive far fewer votes than what are usually inferior WWE matches.

If we have a separate award for non-WWE matches, at least it would get me and others who watch non-WWE stuff incentive to nominate stuff from NOAH, ROH, PWG, New Japan, etc.

On a semi-related point, it's also clear that UKFFers seem to be less interested in watching the best stuff from these non-WWE promotions, compared to four or five years back. Maybe a thread on the main forum on hot matches would generate discussion about matches from these other promotions, and thereby encourage everyone to stop being so apathetic about the wider wrestling scene.

I know lots of UKFFers are all meh about wrestling but this poll really shows how bad the situation has become.
