I've bought a 3DS on a whim. Aside from Mario and Zelda, what are some good games?

    • Fire Emblem: Awakening
    • The World Ends With You
    • Ghost Trick
    • Ace Attorney series (regularly in eshop sales)
    • Professor Layton series
    • Animal Crossing: New Leaf (if you're not currently playing New Horizons).

  2. I think the problem Tekken 7 has is that the standard console versions don't really do the new art style justice, it's one where you have to get a Pro or a PC to really see the jump up and the benefit. They're both said to be a bit blurry and the Xbox One runs it at 720p, whereas on the pro it's supposed to look a lot sharper and on a pc at 4K ultra settings it obviosuly looks really good, not the greatest you'll ever see but the art style looks good and the hair on Kuma & Panda looks amazing.

Any of you lot played Horizon Zero Dawn? I know it got great reviews, but that doesn't really mean anything these days. What's the general opinion of actual people who haven't been paid to say nice things about it?

Haven't played as much of it as I'd want to, but it does seem really good from what I've played of it. It so far has that familar feeling to it as it's a bit of a mesh of several different games combined (recent Far Crys, recent Tomb Raiders, Last of Us to name a few) but the world, the characters and just how it tackles some of your standard open-world tropes (such as towers) makes it seem a lot fresher then it could have felt.

  3. Regarding Street Fighter. Have they got characters on it that are locked from launch date and only available as DLC?

No locked characters at launch. One character per month DLC, starting next month with Alex. Each DLC character can be bought with money or in-game fight points.

  4. Question: I have a physical copy of Star Wars Battlefront coming from Amazon on release. I am currently downloading the game from EA Access to play the trial. When my physical copy comes, I won't now have to wait for the game to install, will I?

No, you should be able to play it straight away as both are same install pretty much so just has to change license, etc. Had the same situation with Fifa.

  5.

The Witcher 2 battle against the dragon was pretty cool. Theirs also the Darksiders series that has some cool boss fights, and wasn't the last DMC made by a UK studio? I haven't played it but the fighting/bosses in there looked pretty much the same as the old one's.

I remember reading that the DMC boss battles were thanks to Capcom. It was something along the lines of they were shocked that the original bosses that Ninja Theory came up with were all just larger versions of previous enemies so they basically had to talk them through how to make a proper boss battle. Hopefully that'll serve them well for their future games though.

I didn't enjoy how the game was mostly stealth mechanics, but the controls and feel of the game didn't match it. If you're going to put so much stealth into a game, sort out the clunky movement and dumb AI first.

How did you find the AI dumb? Thought for the most part it was quite good apart from the odd glitch, especially how you often got flanked by the humans and had to be very careful in planning when facing the infected.

  6. Looking to get a few new games, can anyone recommend me some RPGs that are similar to Oblivion, Fallout:NV etc not fussed about the world it's set in just looking for something that includes plenty of exploration, quests, choices etc that can effect the outcome of the game. Not a massive gamer but i'm a sucker for RPGs like The Elder Scrolls series.

Funnily enough, have just finished the first Dragon Age game and would definitely recommend that. I'd also suggest The Witcher 2 as well. Both have new games in the series out in the next few months so may be worth getting into either series now. Noticed there's currently a sale on the Dragon Age games in the Xbox store if you're on 360.

Outside of fantasy worlds, I'd suggest you give the Mass Effect series and also Deus Ex: Human Revolution a try if you haven't played either.

  7. Anyone here have a chromecast? Have you managed to get it working on that?

It works fine on that when I've tested it. Only problem is I can only seem to get archive stuff (old PPVs, etc) working with chrome as anything live or relatively new seems to hang whilst loading.

  8. I've done some upgrading and I've just read about the heavy shot so I'll give that a go. It's more when I'm trying to take on more than 2 ships at once and I'm getting shot from all angles.

The key thing, especially when you've not yet upgraded quite a bit, is to not be too ambitious about which ships you target. Even with a decent mid-level ship you're going to struggle against more than one ship (unless they're gunboats) so be patient and wait until you find one on it's own or straggling at the back of the pack. I think it took me until I had upgraded to the final hull armour before elite and sixteen side cannons before I could confidently take a group of more than one decent sized ship, etc. With the elite hull armour upgrade I've only just managed to take down my first man o' war.

The heavy shot is great, and remember to use the swivels when prompted after using the heavy shot. Also a good tactic to use is to concentrate on one ship, board it when you've weakened it enough, which'll give you a breather and will allow you to repair the Jackdaw once you've taken the ship and so you'll then be ready to take on the second ship. Earlier on when I had a weaker ship, the best thing I did was to explore the map and find more places with warehouses to raid, as early on this'll give you an easier way to get some wood, metal and money to be able to get the first few upgrades you'll need.

  9. If you can grab the game on PS4, do so. It's incredible. Really, it may be the best sports game I've ever played.

I said that about 2K11 when that came out and not played any of the follow ups.

I think I will have to take your advice

Remember that at the moment you can buy the PS3 version and upgrade to a digital PS4 version for

  10. that type of full on interactive play and I prefer Fifa to be something I can have a bash on if I have a spare half hour here or there, it just seems really convoluted now. Also, I had to update the squads with the latest transfers as Liverpool didn't have Sakho, Ilori or Moses and then they disappeared in the Career mode as the default squads were used automatically. I would hazard a guess that you may find Ozil missing from Arsenal in the same way.

If you download the update from the edit team menu they're all there, they're just not on the default disc version.

  11. The thing is, I can tell there's a cracking game underneath if I could just improve at it, but it doesn't look likely. This new shooting/through-ball system has killed me.

You can switch back to the classic shooting and through ball in the settings menu. I was finding as well that either a defender would usually take the ball off me as it took too much time to pick a good spot/ball or instead I'd rush it to stop it from happening and the shot/ball wouldn't go where I wanted it to.

Gameplay wise it's definitely on the right track but it does seem like you're paying to test the new engine for next years version as there are several bugs (the slowdown one in particular) and feels stripped back compared to the recent games.

  12. Just had a random event where I picked up two people who were robbing a store, and it turned out that one of them was SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

    Patrick "Packie" McReary

    .

From the in car conversation it also seems that SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

you can choose to take him on heists (plus there was a reference to the three leaf clover mission from IV)

  13. I suspect several retailers will "accidently" dispatch their copies on Saturday as planned anyway. Shopto had a fall out with Activision recently about the same sort of thing so can't see them not sending it out two days earlier for this.

  14. Has anyone been playing Saints Row 4?

I'm playing it on ps3 with surround sound speakers and the sound effects just seem either too quiet or missing completely.

Running at super speed doesn't even make a sound. Super jumps make a slight noise. It spoils it and fiddling with the sound levels doesn't help. Tried it just through my TV speakers and it was just the same. Very strange. Feels unfinished.

Can't say I've had any issues so far (360 version). That sounds very strange though. There was a day one patch so guess that wasn't fixed in that.

  15. I'm stuck on Bioshock, I think I'm near the end... SPOILER - Highlight the black box to read

Comstock's airship getting attacked by the Vox Populi. I manage to take care of the first few waves of enemies alright, targeting the gun-ships with Songbird, using possession on the RPG-guys etc, but by the time the Zeppelins come and the Patriots start dropping; I lose track of everything and fail shortly after.

It's fucking infuriating, spent the last few hours trying and failing over and over again.

Great game up until now, though. My only other big complaint with the game so far is the melee combat, the sky-hook just isn't that much fun to use on enemies, there's no real weight to it, and the 'executions' look shit (apart from that first one that happens in a cutscene). Doesn't measure up at all to the wrench and the drill from the first two games.

Let's hope I get to see how it ends one day...

As with a lot of the later parts of the game, I found that the return to sender vigor really helped on this. There is enough of the salts lying around that you shouldn't need to worry about using it fairly often. I also found the patriots were fixated more on destroying the parts of the ship leaving you free to go round the back of them for some easy shots. The way I did it was set the songbird on a gunship, use a shotgun and return to sender to go to where the dropped troops were and take them out and then head back to where you started to take out the patriots from behind. I luckily managed to do that section first time without dying, admittedly only on normal, so that strategy definitely worked for me. The important thing is to remember to use the songbird on a ship/zeppelin as soon as it's available to use as they cause more damage than the ground troops.

  16. Finished Bioshock Infinite this evening, and all I can say is wow. What a game.

I think it looks great on a console, and although it's obviously bound to look better on a higher resolution PC it's still very impressive. Columbia is such a beautiful looking place at times and a nice change from Rapture. The soundtrack is great throughout as well, and really adds to the whole experience, especially in the opening part of the game.

It was also a nice surprise to suddenly hear versions of songs like 'Girls just want to have fun', as well as some original versions, at various points in the game.

I definitely agree that Elizabeth is fantastic. She never gets in the way or outstays her welcome and is always helpful when in combat. Everything about her, from her voice acting to her mannerisms are very well done. A great example of how to get a companion character right and I'm sure in almost ten years time she'll be remembered as fondly as someone like Alyx Vance still is now.

The pacing was much definitely better than in Bioshock, though as some reviews I've seen have pointed out it does seem a bit padded out at times in the middle sections, but nothing major overall. The slow start was a great setup into the world of Columbia as well.

From the row to the lighthouse, the religious overtones when you first arrive and then to the fairground it was a great first hour so. The beach was another good change of pace later on as well

In terms of action, my favourite parts were:

<-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler

Escaping from the tower with Elizabeth whilst being hounded by the songbird. It was a brilliant action sequence, again aided by the soundtrack hyping up the tension and the drama.

The battle near the end where you're defending the airship with the help of the songbird felt pretty epic at times. Especially the moment when the songbird becomes available to use again and you're able to see it swoop in and take out the gun ship that's been bothering you.

The combat was an improvement on Bioshock. Some of the new vigors were quite fun to use, but later on in the game

<-- click on 'spoiler' to show/hide the spoiler

once you find the return to sender vigor, at times most other plasmids suddenly seemed pretty useless, particularly towards the end. If you weren't using it, the game also often suggested that you did and it did seem a tad overpowered at times.

I won't put any spoilers about the ending, as there's always the temptation for people to peek at ending spoilers before they've completed a game (if they haven't looked it up already elsewhere) and I don't want to spoil it for people, but I will say that I thought the ending was good as well.

  17. Recently finished Tomb Raider. As others have said, it's very good and an encouraging reboot of the series. The graphics are great and the combat is good (albeit with a few cover issues and the lack of blind fire/shooting from the hip). Not a few minutes go by though without something making you think of Uncharted, and although Uncharted was inspired in part by Tomb Raider this is much more of a copy of Uncharted than Uncharted was a copy of the original Tomb Raiders (with a little bit of Resident Evil 4 thrown in). That's not a bad thing though, as although the last three games in the series ranged from good to very good, the Tomb Raider formula did need freshening up. I do also like that you can go back and revisit areas after the story has finished to find the remaining collectibles and missed tombs as you get to concentrate more on platforming then.

Must disagree with LaGoosh about the characters though. They've done a very good job with Lara, particularly earlier on in the game, but the majority of your crew and the rest of the characters are pretty bad, with a lot just being lazy stereotypes. The storyline wasn't amazing either, was very predictable in parts and the other characters' dialogue was pretty cheesy at times.

For instance, Whitman being bad was pretty obvious from early on. It was also pretty obvious that the nerdy guy was going to be toast once you found out he had a crush on Lara.

Have also being playing the Citadel DLC for Mass Effect 3. It's excellent, and definitely gives Lair of the Shadow Broker a run for it's money as the best Mass Effect DLC. If you're a big fan of the series, it's a must buy.
