On the May 2nd, 2005 edition of Monday Night RAW, General Manager Eric Bischoff announced a brand new tournament to determine the new number one contender to the RAW World Heavyweight Championship.Eight wrestlers were announced for the tournament, but as a stipulation, Bischoff said that the wrestlers wouldn't know who their opponent would be until they came to the ring. The eight wrestlers that competed in the tournement were Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Christian, Triple H, Shelton Benjamin, Shawn Michaels, Kane, and Edge. The First RoundThe first round of matches for the tourament took place on the same evening that it was announced, on May 2, 2005, live on RAW. Four matches took place, with four wrestlers being eliminated and four wrestlers advancing forward.Match #1: Kane vs ChristianWinner: Kane.Match #2: Shelton Benjamin vs Shawn MichaelsWinner: Shawn Michaels, after a midair Superkick to Shelton Benjamin's face.Match #3: Edge vs Chris JerichoWinner: Edge.Match #4: Triple H vs Chris BenoitWinner: Chris BenoitMatch note: Chris Benoit won by making Triple H tap out in a sharpshooter.Additional note: A controversial, but popular win, as Batista provided heavy interference towards the very end of the match. Batista entered and swung the momentum to Chris Benoit, who locked Triple H into the Sharpshooter finisher. Although Triple H reached the ropes, Batista pulled them out of reach, and he was forced to tap out.The Second RoundThe second round of matches took place on May 9, 2005, live on RAW. Two matches took place, with two wrestlers being eliminated and two wrestlers advancing forward.Match #5: Kane vs Chris BenoitWinner: KaneMatch note: Kane put Benoit in a chokeslam and pinned for the win.Match #6: Shawn Michaels vs EdgeWinner: EdgeMatch note: Michaels was attempting to Sunset flip on Edge, Edge recovered his Money in the Bank briefcase, and struck Shawn Michaels with it, knocking him out for the pin.The Final RoundMatch #7: Edge vs KaneWinner: EdgeMatch Note: Lita, who is the storyline wife to Kane, turned on Kane, allowing Edge to use the Money in the Bank briefcase and get the pin.The Leadup to the Championship MatchEdge, suspecting he may need ringside 'help' in the Championship match against "The Animal", enlisted the aid of Christian, and his "Problem Solver".The Championship MatchThe Championship Match to took place on RAW on May 23, 2005. It featured Batista against the winner of the Tournament, Edge. Batista was able to successfully defend his title, despite heavy interference from Christian, Tyson Tomko, and Lita. Upon this match turning into a four-on-one, Ric Flair entered the ring, and aided Batista in defending the title. With the losers running from a victorious Batista, Batista embraced Ric Flair, who still lay on the mat.The AftermathThe taste of victory would be short for Batista. The entrance music changed, and Triple H entered the stadium, carrying a sledgehammer. While Batista was distracted, Ric Flair delivered a low blow from behind. As Batista nursed this injury, Flair helped Triple H brutalize the wounded animal, Batista. Triple H struck him repeatedly with the sledgehammer, causing him to bleed, and evoking images of Randy Orton from less than a year ago. Over the bleeding and semi-conscious Batista, Triple H challenged Batista to a Hell in a Cell match. In a final, symbolic gesture, Triple H laid the World Heavyweight belt onto the mat, locked Batista into the Pedigree, and Pedigreed him into the belt. This led to a Hell in a Cell match between Batista and Triple H at WWE Vengeance on June 26, 2005, in which Batista was able to retain the title, becoming the first person to defeat Triple H in such a match.
