  1. I'm trying to get my girlfriend into comics at the moment, and I'm not sure whether to try and hook her with Fables or Y:The Last Man. Anyone have an opinion?

Both are all kinds of awesome but I'd choose Fables out of the two. I'd also go with Strangers in Paradise for a GF recommendation. Part soap, part crime, part humour and all very addictive.

  2. Now I am on to DMZ v2 and just a few pages in and things have taken a particulalry interesting turn.

    Gets better :)

It certainly does - I have almost finished v3 and it is a riveting series. I have been recommended this series several times over the last year, just glad I took notice at last!

  3. Just finished The Boys v3 which I enjoyed but being very shallow, I wanted a bit more action, as the first 2 TPBs got me accustomed to! On the flipside of that it was to get some history on VA, I'd like to know Butcher's story too at some point. Really like the realtionship between 'him' and 'her' and the ramifications that will have. Very good series, now I just have to wait a long till v4!

  4. Has anyone bought any of the Watchmen Motion Comics on iTunes? I've read reviews which are pretty favourable, aside from the complaints of one guy reading all male and female parts. The concept didn't really appeal to me but the feedback has me intrigued, just not sure I want to pay

  5. I got volume 11 of Fables for Christmas and it didn't disappoint - still the best comic series I have ever read. Be interesting to see what happens next as the main story arc has come to an end. Interestingly I read that a pilot of Fables is being made in view of becoming a TV series - it'll be fascinating to see how that works out.

Fables is so consistantly brilliant it's hard to talk about it meaningfully! The Jack Of Fables spin off is great, too...A TV show though...Not convinced. As far as what happens when the main arc is over, the latest issue has a BIG change of status quo.

I'm a trade paperback buyer so I have a long time to wait until I get another taste of Fables, Always feels very tempting when I'm in a comic book shop and I see the next single issue of a series I follow. As for Jack of Fables, at first I didn't warm to his character in the Fables story but as time went on I found him more endearing and by the time he was ready to split I couldn't think of anyone better to have a spin-off series. I did read that Cinderella was going to have a 6 issue spin-off too, but I haven't heard any more on that.

  6. What issues does the first TPB cover, Zuesy? I could check but I'm OH SO lazy. Because I'd advise not bothering with Authority after issue 12.

It covers issues 1-8, good knowing that it deteriorates after issue 12. There are so many other titles I want to read too from recommendations, such as Jonah Hex, Loveless and Powers - I'll trawl eBay and second hand shops for Powers as it seems to be so expensive on the usual book websites.

Volume 3 of The Boys has just been despatched by Waterstones - I've really been enjoying this series and Billy Butcher reminds me a little bit of Jack Hawksmoor.

  7. I'm half way through volume 1 of DMZ and the strength of what I have read so far I have ordered volumes 2-5.

The whole storyline based around the main character, Matty Roth, seems like an absolutely fascinating one so far and I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops and how his character develops alongside the storyline. The artwork is very gritty and quite harrowing at times.

Also just read The Authority Vol. 1: Relentless -

enjoyed this, though I felt they overcame their adversaries a little too quickly. In this one TPB two planet threatening forces were sent packing and there is no real urgency for me to buy vol 2. I probably will buy the subsequent volumes as I like the characters, but others will take precedence.

  8. I really enjoyed Ultimates and Ultimates 2, especially the second volume of Ultimates 2 (Grand Theft America). Though I haven't delved too far for fear of spoilers, I have been hearing lots of people say that Ultimates 3 has seen the series take a massive nose-dive in quality. Then again, a fair few seemed to dislike Grand Theft America so there could be hope for me yet.

I'm currently reading Fables Vol. 9: Sons of Empire which is continuing the fantastic quality of this immense series, both in artwork and story. I love they way they evolve the characters from the simple childhood memories we have of them. Hansel is the latest to have his stopry revealed since the days of the Gingerbread House - great stuff.

  9. I gave up waiting for Play to deliver Y:The Last Man vol 10 and got it from Forbidden Planet. It was a great end to a fantastic series. Funny, moving and superbly written and illustrated. Certain events in vol 10 that spanned just a few pages had my emotions swap from happy to sad in a way that I only dream films could achieve.

Just finished Jack of Fables vol 3 which, unsurprisingly, is the spin off series to the amazingly great Fables series and maintains the high quality level in all areas. I am just about to start the Fables prequel 1001 Nights of Snowfall

I am very tempted to read The Boys Garth Ennis being involved is enough of a selling point for me.

  10. It is indeed a great time. When I go in to his room in the morning when he has just woken up, his eyes gradually focus and then he sees me and gives me the biggest smile - that's all I need to see me through the day. He's only been around for 3 months but it is hard to remember a time without him!

  11. No, Lucas is our first. Just had a week off and it was the most time I have spent with him aside from the two weeks off I had when he was born. I usually see him for 10 mins before I go to work and by the time I get back he's usually asleep so it was nice to seem him properly for 9 straight days.

  12. Congratulations Mo, how is your first born doing?Lucas will be 3 months old tomorrow and he's a star - changed my life competely, but for the better and I enjoy every minute I spend with him, and miss every one when I'm away from him.

  13. Got my Gameboy Advance down from the loft and I've been playing Mario Kart - about the only game I've ever been good at and the only one that holds my interest for more than a few minutes. I think it's uncomplicated nature appeals to me.
