  1. I saw the Fry in America thing and, while I enjoyed it I can't help but feel they've hacked a 26-part series down to three or four episodes. He seemed to whizz through half-a-dozen states in an hour and it all felt a bit rushed and perfunctory.

While I agree there were times when it felt really rushed, at the other end of the spectrum it's debateable whether there's really that much that is either culturally interesting or, perhaps more importantly, recognisible to the average viewer about each one. Most of the New England states are incredibly small and don't really carry the same romanticism that you have with the Deep South, Mid-west or West Coast regions thus by condensing them into little snippits it stops the show dragging too much. It's a difficult balancing act trying to feature enough without it starting to drag, although to be honest I think three or four is a bit short. A six or seven would have been my personal preference but i'm still really looking forward to the next one.I'm currently also enjoying the other series about America that's airing in Fridays. I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head but I enjoyed last weeks on water and the mid-west. It compliments the more light hearted Fry series perfectly for me. Takes me back to my uni course. Memories...Pretty much the only other new thing I watch regularly is Buzzcocks. I didn't think Mark Ronson was as bad as everyone claims he was. Granted he wasn't as good as Stephen Fry the new week but then his team didn't exactly help him in that department.
  2. Boosting this back up to share with you all the wonders of 12 Stone Toddler. I was introduced to them late last year and have just picked up the album, which is rather cool. They mix a rock/metally sound with blues, funk and swing and the result is pretty fantastic. The vocalist at times sounds very Mike Patton, particularly in the 3rd song here, and they carry the stong bassline of FNM in several songs also. Here be a wee selection for you to enjoy:12 Stone Toddler - Twang12 Stone Toddler - The Rabbit12 Stone Toddler - Precious CargoThere's a good chance i've monged up at least one of the links as I usually seem to do so let me know if something doesn't work.

Any chance of a re-up of those songs, my good man? I've just heard The Rabbit and a few more of their songs and they are stupidly awesome.

Any chance of uploading The Rabbit again?
12 Stone Toddler - The RabbitVideo's pretty cool if you fancy looking that up. I, however, have a new I'm from Barcelona album to listen to...
  3. Boosting this back up as I heard a cracking piece of American indie on Zan Lowe earlier while cooking my dinner. Reminds me a lot of the Silversun Pickups, which isn't a bad thing at all. The band name sucks but if you look past that you'll find a really nice little song.

  6. Not a teacher in the essense your thinking, I don't work in a school, I'm not a academic teacher. Don't want to give too much away, I'm a practitioner in my feild.

    Do you give motivational speeches?TE_RM.JPG
 Whenever I see Mab post now all i'll be able to see is Ronald McDonald in full garb typing away pulling nobby faces.
  7. I'm with Baz, this thread needs new life.

I recently got a paid so a big pile of CD's arrived as a result. Here be a couple of highlights for the time being. Let me know if i've monged anything up linkwise as I have a habit of doing:

The Bees - Got To Let Go

Really like this, it's like a hip hop bed with some occasional "normal" vocals over the top.

Mark Ronson - Apply Some Pressure

The whole album is a serious contender for my AOTY but I love the horns towards the end of the song. Maximo Park cover if you hadn't guessed.

Apollo 440 - Stadium Parking Lot

Picked up Gettin' High On Your Own Supply as part of the binge and it's a cool album. This song's more rap leaning than DnB with what sounds like The Beastie Boys rapping on near the start. Maybe a bit close to nu metal but still a decent tune.

  8. Cheers for The Pretender, saved me 79p there.

Right, fingers crossed i've got the right files here as they aren't labeled in my itunes folder having been ripped before my internet started working again and thus lacked proper track information.

Nine Black Alps - Not Everyone

My favourite band of recent times. Sound relatively Nirvana-esq grungy.

Taylor hawkins & The Coattailriders - Louise

Drummer from the Foo's side project. Foo's sound is still there but it also has a bit more jam session style sound in many of the tracks.

Hurricane #1 - Step Into My World

In honour of the football tonight some old school match of the day music.

  9. Certainly shall.I love Postal Service and think Give Up is an exceptional album with so many great tunes on it, here's a selection...The Postal Service - Such Great HeightsThe Postal Service - Sleeping InThe Postal Service - We Will Become Silhouettesalso as a bonus treat here's a couple of covers...Iron and Wine - Such Great HeightsThe Shins - We Will Become Silhouettes

Gratzi. I'm liking those other PS tracks, reminds me a bit of Dirty Vegas and Leftfield with vocals. I'm sure it reminds me of someone else as well but I can't for the life of me remember who it is. Still not sure which version of Such Great Heights I like better. It used to be the Iron and Wine one all the way but after hearing it all the time on that advert I got a bit bored of it.I'll have to have a think tonight and stick something else up tomorrow.
  10. Unfortunately those first two tracks can't be found, any chance of a re-up?EDIT - I just listened to the Fields' track and thought it was very arresting and grabbed my attention but did nothing once it had my attention, still I'd like to hear some more though.

First two should work now (I managed to confuse '0' with 'o' in the first one and for some reason put an extra '1' in the second). Here's a couple more Fields. There's one song they have called "If You Fail, We All Fail" which i'll sort out a bit later as I need to upload it off the CD as the one I have on me pooter at the mo I got from itunes and so won't work on other machines but you can hear it on the music player on the website here.Fields - You Don't Need This SongFields - The Death
I really, really liked that 'You Don't Need This Song', very good stuff. I'm just giving a listen to The Maps and will definitely check out some more Fields. They've both got that Postal Service vibe going on don't they?
I haven't heard a lot of Postal Service but I get what you mean. From what I remember of PS i'd say fields were a bit smoother in that they tend to favour instruments over the electronic stuff. Any chance you could upload a few tracks, I can remember Such Great Heights but thats about it.

  12. Having got many a decent tune from this thread I figured I'd try to give something back so I give you:

    ObedientBone - Lost It

UK based Drum 'n' Bass group who use a female vocalist and tend to sound quite punkish/metally at the same time. The won the Diesel New Music Prize for Urban music back in I think 2005. This tune is the first song of their self titled album and is my personal favourite

Maps - So Low, So High

Nominated for this year's Mercury Prize, it's a kind of ambient electronica with some really nice use of guitar and faint vocals that produce a really nice sound. The link might not work as I can't read my own handwriting as to whether it ends in a 'v' or a 'u' but it's defintely one of them. Unless it's a really shit 'c'...

Fields - Song For The Fields

First song from my favourite album of the year and now one of my favourite albums period. They sound a bit like the Editors in terms of using the keyboard effects but with a much softer sound and duelling male/female vocals.

Everything's in mp4 and there shouldn't be any copy guards on them so enjoy.

  13. I'd go back through the thread if I was you. I've proved contact with the SkyDome, my backer, Alex Shane and Len Davies.

You've proved contact with the Skydome, but you haven't proved that there was a booking, the backer I know little about, you've proved contact with Alex and Len, but you've also proved that you decieved them and that they (or at least Len) want nothing to do with you. Therefore you have proved nothing.

The closest I've read was that she slept with Dave Rayne. Which would've been impressive, because they've never been alone in a room together.

I don't believe anyone suggested they had been alone in a room together.Since it's been brought up, where did the pimping story come from?
I admitted to deceiving Alex and Len. The question was about contact. I also only showed you about a fifth of that last e-mail from Len. It goes on to say that if things go well with APW, we can discuss working together in the future. I don't post whole e-mails as a professional courtesy and never have.I'd love to hear this pimping story as well though. I'm espescially interested to know where I was at the time.
Hang on - you posted an email saying he wanted nothing to do with you that went on to say he may work with you in the future if you're sucessful but you stopped at the part where he wanted nothing to do with you out of professional courtesy thus making you look bad? You do realise how utterly, utterly stupid that sounds for someone who is trying to look less incompitent?
  14. OK, i'm too lazy to plough through 11 pages of this but here's my 2 cents after seeing the documentry last night and seeing some of the posts on here about it.It seems really apparent to me that Backyard wrestlers obviously have a lot of passion and love for wrestling. The extent to which they want to immitate the professionals shows that, as does the extent to which they go to make video's look as professional as possible and the fact they're willing to physically hurt themselves by using light tubes etc. To be fair to them in this sense, they are just wanting to do what the pro, the people they look up to and idolise, just as some people play football at the local ground as people have said. However, while it is comparable to football in this sense, there are a lot more risks and it is a lot more dangerous that say going for a kickabout as you are going out to "hurt" your opponent. It is much, much easier to seriously injure yourself backyarding that it is playing football and i'm sure no backyarder would disagree with me here. Fair enough, they say they know the risks and I'm pretty sure they do to a certain extent but is it really worth the risks? I think that fat guy from PCWA's reaction when he nearly got glass shards in his eye showed that maybe they don't realise until a situation like that came along. I'd have to ask Mr. Birch if he or any of his mates had second thoughts after he was rushed to hospital with that great big gash on his head and I wonder how Tony Scarlo reacted when he saw it. Does it take something serious like that to really drive it home how dangerous it actually is outside of a controlled environment away from professionals and the professional set up because i'd have to think that it would be.Picking up on something Elisar said that I did read, just saying backyarding is wrong is not going to stop people doing it. Smokers get told time and time again that smoking is bad for your health and the vast majority know that, but they still don't stop. As I said at the start, it's obvious that they have a lot of passion for the wrestling business, I think that it's more of a matter of utilising that passion in a positive way ie. proper training. As was mentioned in the program, and i think earlier in this thread, the backyarders themselves are realising that just smashing eachother with weapons isn't the way to go and that "technical" matches are the way forward. Now, surely in this case it'd be much better to do it in a proper ring than in a field somewhere on some grass as a) You'd be working in a ring as the professionals do and b) it's in a controlled environment so if something does happen (which would be less likely at a school anyway) you've got the professional help on hand. Granted, you wouldn't have the freedom you would in the backyard and it'd take work, but once you master the basics you'd be working in a proper ring, all your moves would be much slicker and more professional looking. There'd also be more chance of perfoming in front of a bigger crowd and surely that'd be better than performing in front of a few kids.I'm going to stop typing now because i'm starting to waffle and i've forgotten some of the other points I started out with so i'll finish off with this - While backyarders do only do backyard wrestling for fun, they need to realise that their actions could hurt the professional wrestling business as a whole. I can understand it's just a bit of fun and obviously you get to meet a lot of new people across the country, but you also need to remember that if something does go wrong and you do seriously hurt someone, people who aren't fans or who are just looking for an excuse to slag off wrestling are going to come down on the industry as a whole and it's going to be the people you look up to and enjoy watching that will suffer. I admire the passion, but i'd advise that you apply that passion in a positive way.
