  1. 'On the subject of British wrestlers, William Regal would be a huge star if he debuted in 2024; with Japan, AEW and WWE all viable options for the guy. He has the potential to be incredibly menacing, comedic and generally likeable - his style of wrestling would fit in well; although given how influential he's been in wrestling, it's interesting to consider what wrestling might look like in terms of style and personnel if he hadn't been around.'

Regal has so many 'what ifs' around how far he could have gone if he'd been sober in the mid-late nineties, and if he hadn't failed that wellness test in 2008.

In terms of this specific question, if he canw along now, I'm hoping we will see a similar trajectory from his son, Charlie Dempsey, who is already impressing in NXT. I see big things for his future, and hopefully his dad can be there to help him along the way.

  2. Just regarding Barrett, I remember him having some really good matches with Sheamus, when he had the Bull Hammer gimmick before the Bad News one. I went to a TV taping at Birmingham in 2012 I think, where the best match of the night by far was this one, and I'm sure they did it a few times on TV. Think the one we saw ended up on Superstars or something. They also had a vignette for him where he was fighting in a garage or something. Thought it could have gone somewhere, albeit the Bad News Barrett character certainly caught on more with the crowds.

perhaps my favourite thing about that match is babyface Scott Steiner wearing the stars and stripes in Canada, and nobody thinking that might be at least part of the reason the crowd are shitting on it.

Wasn't this the No Way Out match? I recall both being pretty poor but the Rumble one was the entertainingly bad one!

In fairness I love Scott Steiner and him as a singles or Steiner Bros is pretty much always my go to if I can't think of anything else to watch. Such a shame that he was so banged up and poorly treated for most of his 02-04 WWE run, as his WCW latter days character could have been an absolute winner there at the time. I was pleased he was able to redeem himself somewhat in TNA with some banging main event matches with Joe and Lashley, plus the brilliant promo stuff too 😍

  4. I'm not sure if it was accidental or not, but Vince vs Zack Gowen from Vengeance 2003 was also a bloodbath. The blood was literally squirting from Vince's head, but I don't recall if it was because Gowen caught him at a funny angle when he kicked a chair at him or something...

  5. I think there was a time when it seemed they started regularly having celebrities on it, particularly playing themselves, and it just seemed a bit lazy.

Love seasons 1-9 though, but was astounded, watching them through lockdown with my children, getting to season 20 and there still being so much more to come. We just gave up.

  6. I have the PS4 crash issue, and you can play the game if you switch off wireless connectivity for the console.

As someone who stayed up all night to unlock Andre the Giant on No Mercy back in 2000, only to have the cart wipe itself shortly afterwards, I did wonder if this was a homage to the original release 😉

  7. Are there any rough estimates on how much tickets are going to be? I've never been to Wembley Stadium before and while it's good that it's likely tickets will be available for a while due to the capacity of the venue, I'd love to know how much to budget for etc!

Has anyone read Stan Hansen's The Last Outlaw?

Yes I've read that, it's really good, and covers a long period of time from quite a unique perspective.

I've also just read Scott Norton's book, which was a big surprise. Very well written and he comes across as a really nice guy.

I couldn't find a more recent thread than the pre-covid one, so I'm starting a new thread for holidays!

    Anyone off anywhere nice?

We're off to the Isle of Wight in a week or so. Anyone got any recommendations of things to do? Have been before about 5 years ago, but going with the kids this time (aged 4 and 2), so any ideas that are family friendly and age appropriate would be much appreciated.

Blackgang Chine has got to be done if you've got children and visiting IOW.

Shanklin Chine is nice,  weather dependent.

    Ditto Ventnor Botanical Gardens

There's a great little park and playground called Puckpool Park near Seaview,  with an accessible walk to Ryde.

The hovercraft to Portsmouth and HMS Victory is also good fun.

Probably Kamala vs Umaga! I'm sure Umaga would hold up his end Kamala was never Randy Savage. Though I'd love those two for the characters alone (out savaging each other!) I can just imagine Kamala bug eyed as Umaga does a table run splash spot!

This actually happened on Raw in 2006, see link below:

I'm not sure about that. Most King adaptations are terrible because usually they are made on the cheap by crap filmmakers, they are based on long books and get cut down to the point that there's barely a story left and because a lot of Kings best ideas just don't naturally translate very well to a visual medium. A psychic battle with a transdimensional spider made of endless orange light or a rhyme battle against an insane evil train across an apocalyptic wasteland works on the page but will never work on screen.

I think the King adaptations that have worked have worked because a) they are based on his smaller scale simpler more straightforward books (Misery, Carrie) or short stories (Shawshank, The Fog, Green Mile, The Body) and b) proper filmmakers like Frank Darabont, Rob Reiner, David Cronenberg and Brian De Palma have made them.

Oh and Ultimate Hitman please shut up you fucking weirdo.

Totally agree with all of this. And I think there are tons more of his short stories out there that could be well-adapted with the right treatment.

I haven't seen any of the fairly recent TV adaptions of his work, like Mr Mercedes etc  - these are pretty grounded and the books are decent - are they any good?

And has anyone seen the Midnight Mass series on Netflix by Mike Flanagan - I know he's directed various King works to varying successes, but this to me was a cracking little series that could very easily have been a Stephen King book or adaption if I didn't know otherwise.

I've never read a Stephen King short story, even though I prefer the form over novels.

For the King aficinados, which collection is best?

I would instinctively go with Skeleton Crew, which was the first of his collections that I read, and has The Mist, The Jaunt, The Raft, among others in it, a really good variety of work.

Also Graveyard Shift and Nightmares and Dreamscapes from his earlier collections.

If you count his collections of slightly longer novellas, Different Seasons has The Body (Stand By Me), Apt Pupil, and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption in it, and his more recent Full Dark No Stars is a really underrated collection.

It's fascinating. Cena wasn't a main event talent at the time, so I can understand Brock vs him being a midcard match... IF you had something like Undertaker vs Big Show in the main event. Did Taker have a sudden injury at the time that would've messed up plans?

Even with injuries to top names like Undertaker and Angle, I can't fathom how the main events on that tour were decided. Given the stars on there, Brock Lesnar vs Big Show should've been main eventing every night - or if Brock was still wrecked from the shooting star press at WrestleMania and they didn't want him doing a proper main event singles match, something like him, Benoit and Rey vs Big Show, Cena and Hardy. And yet almost every night, it was a Rikishi tag match that went on last. They must have had some reason for it.

Undertaker took the tour off because his wife was about to give birth IIRC. Maybe this led to a card reshuffle?

  14. I love ‘Doctor of Thuganomics’ John Cena. His boss entrance music, no fucks-attitude, rap promos (homophobia aside) all entertain me greatly. However, I’ve only seen his match against Taker from Vengeance 2003 and his bit in the Rumble of 2004 (the pop when he comes out is mental) from this time.

Does anyone have any recommendations for memorable matches of this era Cena I should watch?

I’m looking for stuff from before Wrestlemania 21 if possible, cheers!

Cena also had a good mini programme with Brian Kendrick/Spanky in 2003, a couple of really good matches with Eddie in August/September 2003, (one in El Paso with Eddie's official face turn, and one which was a parking lot brawl a few weeks later, a good match with Mysterio on November '03 and a really good match with Benoit in December '03

Also liked his stuff with Angle from No Mercy 2003 and against Angle and Show from No Way Out 2004. Not a big fan of him from his US Title run onwards until he won the belt at WM21, particularly his stuff with Dupree and Booker T.
