  1. I'd actually say, looking at the other movies out, that Layer Cake was probably the worst movie of 2004. The Butterfly Effect was at least fun to watch at times. Maybe for the wrong reasons. ukedge didn't even mention the scenes with Evan as a child swearing like a trooper which is always good for a laugh. And where this scene leads to is just stupid. Would YOU listen to that kid if he was in your basement ? Fuck no.However, I still enjoyed it.

That's because I watched Layer Cake. Which doesn't have a single Evan or basement in i  t.
  2. So has nobody else seen The Assassination Of Jesse James?

No where was showing it round me. I might try to see if the Phoenix in Oxford are still showing it and make the trip.

Has anyone seen Ghost Rider with Nicholas Cage? I've not seen it and was wondering if it's any good? He seems an odd choice for the role.

I saw this on a flight. In any other circumstances I would have left. Add this to the list of appaling Cage films which almost shadow his excellent stuff.I've had a think and I've decided on my top films of 2007. Normally I would list 10, but I honest can't think of 10 films that I saw last year which really had an effect on me.Yes, it's in order of what I think is best.1. A Guide To Recoqnising Your Saints.2. The Lives Of Others.3. Eastern Promises.4. This Is England.5. Zodiac.Films there were good but not worthy of the list:The Darjeling LimitedHot FuzzReign Over MeSunshineFilms that might have made it on the list had I seen them:Bourne UltimatiumAssination Of Jesse JamesThe shits of 2007 (not cause they were so terrible but because they were nose dived below my expectations of them):GrindhouseAmerican GangsterI Am Legend
  3. I think people have been generous with I Am Legend. It is so unoriginal and dull, its got a few interesting bits, but for the most part I was laughing. Sure Smith's good but the plot is full of loop holes and cliches, and trys to sell itself on the back of it's great panaromic shots. The first film I've seen in the cinema in 2008 and it was not a good indication of what to expect for the rest of the year.

  4. I just wondered if anyone has seen Apocolypto made by Mel Gibson? I noticed the DVD in WH Smith today and it's interesting, it's set in ancient South or Central America it appears.

Yeah I've seen it. Its quite cool. Its really just an over blown action movie under the pretense of something important because its all in some old tribal language. Its very violent and gory so if you like that type of thing its worth a watch.
No, that Passion of The Christ your thinking of, Def. Its all about this bloke called Jesus who invents the modern table and as a cruel consquence is crucified by the very people whoose great-grandkids buy the shit from Ikea.
  5. I saw Zodiac the other night and was really blown away by it, really great film. Seeing Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jnr just riff off each was excellent (what a year Downey had for great films in 2007). Also Mark Ruffalo as the detective was really great, this film wouldn't have worked without the brillant cast. The film is as much about the people hunting the Zodiac murderer and how the case changed them, than it is an actual dective story but it works beautifully. One of the best of 2007.

  6. Perfume: The Story Of A MurdererI've just finished watching this on Sky Premiere, after remembering a

for it in the cinema and being intrigued by what little was shown. You pretty much know what to expect after reading the title, with the addition of a unique story and some dark humour/odd twists. I'd definitely say it's worth watching and would probably watch it again, just curious as to what other people make of it.
I saw this a while back, not a bad film but not as dark as it needed to be, although I did like it.Ben Whishaw is great in the lead, although apparently in the book he is meant to be really gross and disfigured, not an example of the FHM generation.Oh yeah, the execution scene at the end does tarnish the whole film.
  7. After buying the dvd a few months this morning I finally got round to watching Dead Man's Shoes.Using the index on page 200 of this topic I read through other's people's thoughts on this film, and am in total agreement with all but one reviewer (Mr. Seven) in thinking it was a great film.My only critisizm is the ending scene which failed to hold my interest, a bit of a letdown compared to the first 70 minutes.Considine was fantastic I thought. Having previously only seen him in 'Hot Fuzz' I will definitely be looking out for some other stuff he's been in.Mark Briscoe look-a-like Toby Kebbell played his part brilliantly, very believable and sympathetic. There were also some funny scenes with great lines, most of which were in the drug-dealer scenes.Best line of the film for me though, was:

Where Richard opens the suitcase to show Herbie his mate dead and chopped up inside it, he says ...

"Do you want to give him a kiss?"

    The DVD was
  8. Little Children

Apart from the irratiting narrator, this film is very good.

Released in 2006 by director Todd Field, this film starts pinpointed on one women in a classy US suburbia before expanding slowly to expose a closely knit community of people whoose lives are just as complicated and distorted.

The film relishes in the mini-crisis of everyday people and how it impacts society and individuals on a much more powerful level. If that sounds boring, thats because without the strong cast and beautiful artistic direction it has, it would be.

Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson are great as the "leads", but it is the guilt-complexion driven child flasher character of Ronnie J. McGorvey (Jackie Earle Haley) who is the film's strongest string. He is simply stunning in the role, and as the character evolves beautifully, with the chilling conclusion that is delievered you can't believe he didn't win that oscar.

  9. Totally agree with you Rob. Goodfellas is one of my all time favourites. Quality film!Having said that.. I absolutely hated Godfather 1 and 2. Wierd huh!

The Godfather part 2 is one of the best films ever - a masterpiece. It relies on none of the gimmicky devices that Goodfellas does to tell its story, and the single performance from Pacino outdoes Liotta or Pesci. Plus DeNiro is better in Godfather Part 2.Last night to get myself in the christmas spirit I watched National Lampoon Xmas Vacation, not the greatest comedy ever but raises enough smiles and christmas cheer over its 90 minutes to make it worthwhile.
  10. Went to see Hitman last night (not my choice) and it was the shits. It gets some of the feel of the game right, but giving Agent 47 a slight sense of humour and a love interest was wrong. Plus the film chooses to ignore one of the game's strongest aspects - his struggle with his conscience. The film plays out like a shoddy cop and good-guy assasin B-Movie with little to write home about.

  11. After American Gangster at the weekend, I got in a mood for another gangster flick last night. I've had Goodfellas for a while, but never got round to watching it but did so last night.

And again, I found the whole experience underwhelming considering it's widely acknowledged as one of Marty's good 'uns. American Gangster justified it's long running time, but Goodfellas seems to drag and drag after the first two hours. Every five minutes it's teasing you with a possible ending - e.g. the day inwhich Henry is busted by the feds. Plus apart from DeNiro (who is spot on as ever) the cast seem to have gone to Jim Carey's "School Of Over-Acting" - it is unbelievable how bad it is at times (especially Henry's wife Karen).

Sure the film does have its moments and tells a great story, with lots of twists, great character development and some seriously fucked up hit scenes but over-all the film lacks the all-rounded brillance of gangster films such as The Godfather. Still this is more of a gangster film than American Gangster, and its better too.
