Former ROH World Champion "American Wolf" Davey Richards joined Harry and Jon of ROHWorld yesterday as part of an interview for the forty-fifth episode of ROHCast. In the interview Davey discusses the reasoning for his current absence from Ring of Honor, when he plans to return, his run as ROH World Champion, whether an American Wolf reunion is possible, what beholds him in the future, plus much, much more!

Here are some of the highlights:

What were some of your favorite matches and moments while you held the belt?: "I really enjoyed the match with Michael Elgin, I really enjoyed the match with Adam Cole, you know Ring of Honor was in the middle of a transitional period at that time, hadn't had as many singles matches as I would have liked but you know I don't book the shows.

"I know it's the kind of thing that'd come under fire but in-terms of my title reign and Kevin Steen you know, it's fantastic he could defend the belt twenty times a night but it doesn't mean anything to quality or anything, I don't feel like he can even touch the quality of one of my matches... in my eyes nowhere near my title reign.

"But you know, God bless, but I would have liked to have defended it more."

Despite having great chemistry, do you and Roderick Strong hate each other in real life?: "Yeah, more or less, I don't get along with Roderick he doesn't get along with me, you know, we don't need to air all our dirty laundry, we've never made friends we're never going to be friends, you know he says in the ring we're both good at what we do we're both professionals but outside the ring you won't find us going to the bar on a Saturday night."

Was you being lumped in with Camp Cornette beneficial to you or the company?: "No it was totally brought up by Kevin Steen... and the whole MMA thing, I've never once said, I've never once represented an MMA fighter, ehm all this crap;.. I mean we talk about my credibility as being a pro-wrestler I mean I'm the best wrestler in the world and I say not because I'm trying to be arrogant or because some company puts it on a t-shirt or puts it on a television screen.

"I'm the best wrestler in the world because I'm doing wrestling the way it should have been done which is why I'm in the back of a car travelling ten hours to go wrestle in Atlanta, Georgia and then fly back to Chicago and then go to Puerto Rico.

"I've lived in Japanese dojos, I've trained and wrestled all over the world. My job is not to get over, my job is to get better which is what Bryan Danielson told me, a professional wrestlers job is to be the best athlete."

Is there truth to the rumor you turned down a WWE deal in the past?: "Yeah, their wrestlers are fantastic, I enjoy their product, but to me it's not fair for me to take a spot in FCW when I really don't want to be there and that takes a spot from someone, who has that dream cause I know deep down I'm not going to be able to handle that kind of road schedule.

I don't have it in me, I'm a home bug I get homesick really easy, so you know I won't take the contract knowing my heart isn't really in it."

  2. By the way does anyone know the best place to get up to date ROH DVD's? ie shows from the last few months?

Either ROHwrestling.com shop for the latest releases, (although of course it's from th states) or Amerchandise.co.uk in the UK!

ROH's official shop is the best, especially if you have the Ringside Membership as you get 15% off.

You'd end up paying more if you bought from Amerchandise, or at least when I've worked it out, they've always been more expensive.

  3. I'm still not sure on Bennett. Character wise he has it but his matches are just generally 'meh'. Even when in the ring with somebody like TJP who makes everybody look good, he fails to shine. I'm not one of the 'omg he sucks' brigade but I think he has a lot of improving to do before he gets anywhere near the main event.

In terms of the main event, it does need freshening up, but who's out there? There's nobody in the US who could come in full-time and fit right into the top of the card, or at least I can't think of any. On a positive note, they are pushing the likes of Elgin and Cole who IMO will be consistently near the top of the card by the end of the year.

  4. I think Ciampa v Lethal was the only disappointing match for me. Just a few minutes into the match, you could tell it as going to go to a draw which was a shame. I like Ciampa but this draw does nothing for either man. Lethal should have dropped the TV title by now, I was surprised Bennett didn't win it at Final Battle but even more so that Ciampa didn't take it last night.

The main event was especially good. Much better than I expected as they refrained from making it long for the sake of it and it didn't get into overkill territory. I've always liked Adam Cole too so I really enjoyed the finish. All in all, a great show and fantastic value.

  5. What is Grizzly Redwood actually for? Truly one of the most pointless and shit things I have seen in wrestling for ages and yet he's been booked by ROH for years now, hasn't he?

He came through the ROH Wrestling school so I think there is some blind loyalty involved. I can't see him sticking around for much longer, Andy Ridge is slightly better and does just as well in the jobber role.

  6. What a strange thing to say. Don't we always hope there are no injuries?

With an iPPV coming the following night, injuries could ruin a potential match/matches.

I'll be watching the next iPPV, out of interest to see if anythings improved since December. I watched the last one and thought the wrestlers efforts were tainted by the way ROH paced and produced the card. ROH needs someone who can produce the show (because the sound, lighting, onscreen graphics were all fucked up), someone who knows how to pace the show to accommodate a 2012 audience (four and a half fucking hours, with a 40 minute main event?!!!) and they also need road agents to help some of the matches make more sense. They'll never progress with the way they currently run their shows. I thought Cornette was supposed to know what he was doing?

Final Battle was definitely overkill. The tag team gauntlet went way too long, the tag title match was a dragged out mess and nobody cared for the main event because as you said, it was the wrong match for the situation. The first half of FB was brilliant but after the intermission, it went quickly downhill.

  7. The actual WrestleMania weekend events (which aren't even in Miami..) seem to be a bigger focus, though I can't link the actual cards at the moment. When was Homicide's last appearance for ROH before this?

Death Before Dishonor 9? Lethal and Homicide vs The Embassy.

Im quite pumped for the card, Hope that WGTT vs ANX doesn't go too long. Bucks vs Briscoes should be great, as should Steen vs Jacobs. Looking forward to Perkins and Red teaming up! Also the main-event should be awesome if one team turns heel. As much as i want to see Cole as a heel i would rather Team Ambition turn into dickheads, As Davey is a natural!

Pretty much my thoughts. While this show might not be '10th Anniversary' worthy, as a card, it looks very promising. The main event should be a good match if they keep it under 30 mins - I'm also hoping for some kind of storyline advancement too although Davey as heel? Not sure they'd want that with Steen winning the belt next.

Briscoes/Bucks should be awesome, so should TJP/Red v HoT and Steen/Jacobs. I'm hoping Lethal v Ciampa will be better than people expect and the other two matches while not being spectacular will hopefully be solid. I always pop when I see Homicide, even if he's only been away for a few months!

    All in all, for

  8. The 10th Anniversary Show is slowly becoming a great card. The newly announced tag match should be great, the Tag Title match will be awesome, I'm looking forward to Ciampa/Lethal and even the main event should be good despite the awful build-up.

    $10 is an absolute steal.

  9. Thanks for the info on the show. Really looking forward to receiving it this week in the post.

As for reviews, what's the best site to go off for reviews on events/dvd releases? Preferably not too smarky or work-rate perverts

All depends, for old shows, I find 411mania to be pretty good.

Ring of Honor had teased in a recent newswires that they were in negotiations with a 'surprise name' for the 'Showdown in the Sun' events on Wrestlemania weekend.

While he may not be that man, it was confirmed on this week's edition of ROH TV (if you've not seen it yet, read the report here) that former WWE, WCW and ECW star Lance Storm will be facing off against 'The Prodigy' Mike Bennett on Night One of the double header.

Storm has won a multitude of championships across the major promotions in the United States. He has particularly succeeded in tag team competition, winning the ECW World tag team championships on three occasions as well as winning the WWE World tag team titles four times. Add those to a WWF Intercontinental title, a WCW Hardcore championship and the WCW United States heavyweight belt three times, and Storm has an impressive r

  11. Not that interested in seeing Storm again to be honest, especially against Bennett.

Masters would be a good shout depending on how much he wanted. Another name I've seen thrown around is MVP and I just hope they don't bring him in as the stuff I've seen of him in Japan isn't pretty.

  12. In the past 12 months I can remember (one-on-one) Manhattan Mayhem IV where Eddie won the title and the Ringmaster's Challenge match from Death Before Dishonor IX. Forgot they also had the rematch for the title at Supercard of Honor VI.

  13. I thought some of you might be interested in this.

We interviewed Mike Mondo (current ROH wrestler and of Spirit Squad fame) about his time so far in ROH, what he hopes to achieve in the future and how Ring of Honor differs from WWE both inside the ring and behind the curtain.
