  1. Watching WWE for the first time in ages (WWE Superstars on Sky) and can’t believe crowds are still chanting “WHAT?!” after over ten years. Stone Cold only used that catchphrase for about a year during and just after the Alliance storyline, didn’t he?

Interesting point; I wonder if everyone chanting even realises the origin of the chant.

  2.

Hadn't the US boom ended by 92 anyway, despite still going strong in Europe. Thanks to Bret Hart obviously.

Yes with Hogan leaving the company and the bad media coverage because of the scandals and steroid abuse they got. Not to mention that Nailz almost choked the fucker to death. It's safe to say that 1992 was a year Vince would rather forget.

Absolutely, but that month was essentially a Wrestlemania so excluded from the list and a killer tour of Europe. Maybe have a look at history of WWE to see if there was small US house shows either side.

  3. The house show numbers seem a bit low at times.

Eg April 1992 was essentially Wrestlemania then a huge European tour with 2 rosters. Incredibly popular time for the company, surprised the average head count is so low.

  4. Wrestling seems to attract or breed utter weirdos in this respect.

Yesterday I checked out the contents of Curt Hawkins shoot interview, and it appears to have stories of him and Zack Ryder "having heat" for putting their bags in the locker room before the top of the locker room hierarchy, and Miz having to get changed outside the locker room for a year.

Just imagine your normal workplace some dick(s) telling you that you weren't permitted to use the staff room, or twats falling out with you for using their coat hook.

It's a very odd business we love!

  5. My assumption was, and is, that Andre probably felt insecure as he wasn't as far as I am aware as seasoned as the household names from World of Sport etc, or perhaps as good; he just happened to be the guy that opened the floodgates to the idea of opening a training school and advertising it.

I don't know if there was such an open door to the business before Andre set up his school. Before that the only way was probably to hang around at shows etc and show willing by helping with menial tasks etc and then the reward was some training then learning on the job. I say this with someone like James Mason in mind, who presumably started at a young age by ingratiating himself with All Star.

Quite odd actually; he's the one that opened the door to anyone with cash in hand for training, but from what has been said it appears he wanted to maintain the reality with the fans that paid to attend.

Andre must have been really short, as I recally a pic of him holding Fin Martin in a piledriver pose and Fin looked really tall and lanky in comparison to a short stocky Baker.

Re: Fin, even when he wrote stuff I didn't agree with I didn't think "I hate this man now" or dislike him. But he seems to have riled a lot of people - at least on these forums - to the point of hatrid, which is rather sad as I'd guess at one point everyone that was a fan pre internet was totally engrossed in what he had to say.

I'll need to listen to this.

  6. I read years ago that the infamous Enron made a bid for WWF circa 15 years ago. At the same time it had a division dedicated to pioneering home entertainment/video on demand. There probably is market for someone to take the footage off Vince's hands, including external parties like WB, I just can't see their being enough money on the table.

  7. Vince Russo publicly stated that "SpikeTV is a horrible partner." Here's Spike's Senior Vice President of Communications polite "fuck you" in response:

I want to start by saying we enjoyed a great relationship, a very collaborative relationship with Dixie Carter and her team over the years. We took TNA from a late night spot on Saturday nights, doing 500,000 viewers, to a two-hour time slot that did two million viewers over time. Spike went out of its way, not in just adhering to its contract, but above and beyond the contract. We paid Hulk Hogan, we paid Eric Bischoff, with our money. We financed many shows. We financed U.K. shows. We helped promote. We gave TNA a prime time slot of Thursdays from 9-11 p.m. I think his comments are way off base. Clearly, he doesn't know what he's talking about. He's somebody who thinks more of himself than really exists. Vince Russo never meant anything to Spike TV. He had nothing to do with negotiations. Nobody cares about Vince Russo at Spike TV. Nobody cares or knows who he is. We have a great relationship with TNA. We went above and beyond for them, as they did for us. Dixie helped promote our shows. What Vince Russo is saying is complete nonsense."

There is a lot of past tense in there about the relationship isn't there.

  8. Sure someone can confirm if it's still the case, but historically if you took on a free trial with Amazon Prime, you could cancel immediately and still enjoy the free trial period without having to worry about forgetting to cancel.

  9. I enjoyed Jericho's WCW character where he had Ralphus as a sidekick. Otherwise he irritates the shit out of me.

And I don't think he's become an arse with fame and fortune. Eg check out the infamous Jim Cornette Dairy Queen vid. Hee an utter cock in that, back in Smokey Mountain before he had a shot in the big leagues.

  10.

Apparently some Scottish promotion has Dennis Stamp appearing at their shows this weekend.

Unless the bloke happened to be on holiday in the area and offered to pop in it strikes me as an appalling waste of airfare, other than to have a giggle about him being booked, maybe even bring out a trampoline. Bloody surreal.

A smarky in-joke that'll lose them a few hundred pounds so they can giggle with each other. Real smart business.

Turns out when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer a couple of years back, they promised him a booking if he beat it.

Radio DJ Chris Duke (the man behind the NWO Takeover tour) promised to get him a booking. All he had to do was find some chumps to pay for it.

Christ I suppose if you put some thought to it someone like this would be involved somehow.

Any idea what became of the NWO Takeover tour mob? Normal service resumed in the Scottish wrestling scene?

  11. I feel a "hold pattern" has existed since the day WCW as a separate entity ended. There probably has never been a glass ceiling that can compare to the one that has existed for the last 13 and a half years.

Timing as well. Eg had the big hosses of the naughties had been around 10/20 years earlier they'd be high profile players with inflated bank balances. Instead the Snitsky's, Matt Morgan's, Jon Heidenreichs etc are barely memorable compared to a Sid Justice.

  13. Perhaps one for the question and answer thread, but do the wrestlers have to pay for their spot and profit from the money they take in?

I'd be kind of worried if I was someone like Doug Williams, but in the nicest possible way - I'm thinking he's probably posed for countless pics and signed many autographs without a charge, so the people that would be interested are already sorted.
