Are there any Excel gurus here?

Basically I have a spreadsheet with staff names and their date of birth. I want to be able to open this spreadsheet on a Monday morning and it highlight the data in some way to say which staff have a birthday in the next 7 days. I'm guessing conditional formatting is the way forward but I can't work it out!

I'm sat in a Denny's somewhere in AZ, but...

Use a combination of Datedif (or Datediff - one is for VBA) and Today(), with their DOB.

For the DOB though you'll have to spoof the year portion - so =DATE(2024, MID(A1, 4,2),  LEFT(A1,2)

    Basically something like

    =DATEDIF(DATE(2024, MID(A1, 4, 2, LEFT(A1, 2)), TODAY(), "d")

Depends on the format of the date of course.

You can then use this in conditional formatting

    Probably 🧐

    Edit - or filters 🤓

36 years old, 18 stone and a dickie ticker? Good grief. Where did it all go so wrong? (Not a question that needs answering, you bastards).

I was 34 when I was diagnosed with a heart issue, and in a similar situation (I was about 18 stone, playing football regularly). My condition turned out to be atrial fibrillation though (my heart didn’t stop, it just went really quickly and really erratically) and I remember the time between it happening and being diagnosed was awful so you have my full sympathy.

The worst element was knowing that I needed to exercise to lose the weight to help prevent occurrences, but not wanting to exercise in case it set off an occurrence and I ended up back in hospital and that remains to this day.

I’d genuinely forgotten this but it got pretty bad for a while and is probably the cause of my anxiety issues now.

I’m now 53, still 18 stone and still have a couple of episodes a year and I’m starting to see that this post might not be the win I was hoping for 🧐

Anyway, I genuinely hope it all works out for you, and always happy to talk through my experience.

  3. I am the back end of ticking write a book off my bucket list (its been 20 years in the making so its about time)

When I started I used the snowflake method to help me structure something (https://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/articles/snowflake-method/) but after a while just started writing whatever came into my head.

In the last year or so I've used the 27 Chapter method to give my work a bit more structure and flow (https://livingwriter.com/blog/27-chapter-method-made-easy)

And now I'm nearly done I use Quillbot to (https://quillbot.com/) to help with my grammar and some paraphrasing work. It also has a co-writer function that I've just looked at which seems pretty cool if you're starting out.

Oh and Google Docs. Means I can write on my Laptop, Phone, iPad. Really made a difference to my output.

  4. Quick heads up if you happen to work in the NHS (or know anyone that does).

Inspired by the last few post I decided to sign up for DDP Yoga this afternoon.

I decided to try my luck with the Military/First Responders discount and to my surprise it worked. You have to jump through a couple of hoops to prove you work for the NHS but 50% discount!

Hopefully someone can make use of this info.

  5. Crossed the border in to Somerset last night to watch the Quarter Finals of the T20 with my lad.

It was his first game of cricket and he couldn't have been less interested 😐

It was fantastic to be back in a ground though and the atmosphere was something that I've really missed, only having been to local Devon non-league football in the last 18months. From inside the (admittedly partisan) stadium Somerset absolutely hammered Lancashire as well although I have to confess, watching Livingstone smash the ball around for a few overs was something else.

I've arranged a work 'meeting' for my team in a couple of weeks for the England vs New Zealand Woman's T20 which should be good.

Just need to Bears to win tonight now  😁

This reminds me of when my brother in law who works in IT for a finance company got his MDs pay by mistake once due to their employee number being digits apart. I think he got roughly £70,000 and obviously had to give it back.

I'd have left the country before they'd even noticed. Can always get another job innit?

Someone else once got my bonus as we had the same Surname and HR couldn't work out how Vlookups worked.

Ironically my job was as an Excel Developer 😐

  7. For my 40th my wife took me to London for the weekend (we lived in rural Devon so this is actually a lot grander than it sounds).

She'd bought tickets for the Legally Blonde musical and also went to watch a Richard Herring show, along with all the usual tourist stuff.

The only downside to the weekend was that Mrs Pistol was feeling quite unwell for the whole time and  she told me she thought it might have been the flu (or swine flu which was a thing at the time)

A few weeks later the actual reason became apparent and 10 years later I'm now 50 and I've just finished another school run.

    Not the worst birthday present.

Got my first vaccine booked for next week. A McDonalds will follow.

Had my first jab last week and as seems to be customary, headed straight to McDonalds afterwards.

Ordered Pancakes for my wife and they managed to mess the order up and instead give her a Sausage and Egg McMuffin. With no Muffin.....

Not a side effect I was expecting.

  9. I see Matt Hancock has stated that the NHS is ready to roll out the vaccine when and if it becomes available.

What he seems to have missed is that the one thing that we need to get this done (and done properly) is a functioning workforce - what we have is a workforce caught in the middle of a 2nd wave of the pandemic where the number of people off for Covid related reasons has doubled in the last 14 days (in the region I work in at least - which is one of the least affected).

NHS are talking about about training all sorts of people to be able to administer the jab (leisure centre worker is my current favorite) but until we get on top of wave 2 I fear that this might not be the immediate fix that we want (and need).

  10. Just picked up some Wilson Launch Pad irons in the Amazon Prime sale for £348.

Was looking to get a set of Hybrid/Irons and it was between these and the Cleveland Launcher HB Turbos but the £100 saving swung it.

It also allowed me to pick up this beaut from Druids Golf.

I now define 'all the gear, no idea'

Absolute shocker today. 52 over, and even worse when I kneeled to tie my golf shoes on in the car park before we checked in I split my trousers from arse to cock and had to play 18 holes with half a hairy brain hanging out. 12 shots on the 340yds 10th was a special highlight.

It was a fourball as well so I took 3 sides of banter.

Im blaming that bracing wind hitting my pants.

I'm slightly bemused that someone hasn't made a joke about why you should always take two pairs of trousers when you play golf (spoiler - it's in case you get a 'Hole in One') (c) my 9 year old son.

On the 12 shots, so far as I can work out the new scoring system means that the maximum you can score is a net double bogey (your supposed to pick the ball up at that point apparently). So assuming your normally a 36 Handicap and it was a Par 4 you should only put 8 on your scorecard.

Well, Thursday night's lesson worked well yesterday, hitting the ball solidly, today not do much.

Currently using every available radiator to dry my gear out 😂 Looking forward to the winter to work more on my swing. First season in four without a trophy which is disappointing so need to get myself back on track.

Anyone else venture out in the monsoon this morning?

I drove up to Bristol for a round yesterday and got absolutely battered by the rain for the first 12 holes before it mellowed into an annoying drizzle.

It was an 18 hole par 3 course and I was on fire. Back 9 was 5 over par and front 9 only got ruined because I tried be clever and use a recovery wood off the tee. Twice 😒

For me it comes back to my previous post - Ended up 16 Over but know that if it was a full length course that would have been at least an extra shot a hole (in addition to the extra par) and would have ended up 38 or so over.

I think I might heed the advice above and spend the winter on the driving range with my big clubs and take some lessons.

Excuse the pun but that should let me come out swinging next year.

  13. I'm fortunate that my little village in Devon has its own 9 hole par 3 course so I've been playing that once or twice a week and my score is down from the mid 40s to the mid 30s and I've also become a member so have my first official handicap (9N).

The upside is that my short game has become pretty good and I bought a decent putter which makes a difference.

The downside of course is that it really doesn't translate to 18 hole golf and I'm still pretty consistently hitting 38 over which tells me that I need to get to the driving range and hit something bigger than a 5 iron!

I'm currently playing with a set of Benross clubs which do a good enough job but I'm looking to upgrade to some of the Cleveland Launcher HB Turbos in the not too distant. People rave about them being easier to hit but then won't play them because of the way they look which is just odd. My number one club at the moment is a chipper (or cheating as I've been accused of!) so I have no illusions of looking like a proper golfer - I just want to get round in as few a shots as possible.

  14. I've just taken up golf again after many years and it's both glorious and horrific in equal measure.

My advice, for what it's worth, is that you can save your game with a decent short game and some dustbin lid putting.

By way of example I can top, chunk and loop the first 3 shots off the tee and so long as they go straight I'm usually okay.

Then assuming I don't have to go over or out of a bunker I'll grab the trusty 7 iron and chip it in the general direction of the hole. What I'll never do, unless absolutely necessary, is try a flop or a wedge; there's an absolute certainty I'll top it and it will end up further from the hole. Its a boring but effective strategy.

And with putting just don't look at the hole.

I have my first 18 holes on a proper course tomorrow for several years.

    I'm aiming to break 110.
