  1. Sandow. Adam Bomb. Natural Disasters. Joy Giovanni. (Not a boy, but same principle.)

I also LOVED Adam Rose in his brief NXT run, and still maintain that changing his theme was the beginning of the end. First one was impossible not to chant along to.

  2. If pushed right, he has all the tools to be a decent midcard draw in WWE. The problem is, they give up on anyone not called Ryback after five minutes if they don't instantly get over.

What a load of shit. He might have improved since, but he was absolutely useless in WWE. He gave Vince McMahon a finisher at WrestleMania, was allied with Bret Hart during Bret's return run, and had the tag titles for about six months. And not one person gave a lazy wank about him. Because he was utter shit. Fair play to him if he's alright now, but it's nonsense to make out he was great and hard done by in WWE. He was given far more there than his abilities warranted.

I meant if he were to come back with a bit of fire in his belly and the booking team behind him. Absolutely wasn't referring to his previous run, where as you say he was shite.

  3. I've been watching the Wrestle Kingdom 7 show and what's happened to Harry Smith? He's intense as fuck now. He's got ring presence and his facial expressions are pretty good. Is he always like this or was he having an good night? Doesn't even seem like the same planned chubby faced goon we saw in the WWE. He wears a big red skull mask on the way to the ring as well. And he's managed by Taka Michinoku which is always cool.

I like how he kicks exactly like his dad. Like when Davey Boy Smith used to throw his left leg up and jump before kicking someone. Nice touch. He's now got his Dad's suntan as well as his haircut so it looks really weird from a distance.

Saw him wrestle Finlay the day before Mania this year and thought the same thing - has a real intensity to him now (the fact that they were stiffing the fuck out of each other despite wrestling in front of about 60 people helped).

  4. Does anyone have any idea about the magazine's circulation? Whatever it is I'm sure Fin must make a decent living off it, compared to now trying to obtain "real work".

I have no clue about numbers but I'm sure Fin has written before that every single issue has been profitable. That'd suggest to me that he's doing alright, since there would be no need to impose excessive restraint on the editor's pay unless costs hadn't been covered for a period. I don't think anybody knowingly underpays the editor of a money-generating enterprise, at any rate.

The last line made me smile ironically.

To say any more would be unprofessional... :)

  5. Buying an ad should never mean you're immune from criticism.

Buying an ad in a publication that does nothing but attack your product kind of proves you're dismissive of and impervious to criticism, if not immune. If someone publishes a shit game and advertises it in your magazine, then they are doing so with confidence that their ad will mean more to your readership than your negative review of the game will. I don't know if your attitude in such scenarios is more "lol stupid publisher doesn't realise my readers will never buy this game when they see the score we give it, keep lining my pockets, fools" or "fuck, our reviews are ultimately meaningless, I'm depressed" or whether you're not involved with the ad sales and don't think about it. But I know PowerSlam's pretty much a one-man shop, so Fin'll be whacking the Royal Rumble DVD advert into his Microsoft Publisher* file for the next issue at the same time as he's writing about how it was terrible and Daniel Bryan should've done the clean double. It's got to be a bit soul-destroying for him to know that Silver Vision reckon his readership might be entertained by his opinions, but definitely won't be swayed by them.

*I can't imagine PowerSlam is put together with anything else.

Actually a former colleague and good friend of mine, Oliver Hurley, writes the DVD reviews. And he's given plenty of four- and five-star reviews to SilverVision/WWE products.

I agree Fin can be overly negative for no apparent reason at times, but it's not quite as black and white as you suggest.

  6. Exactly. Like a celebrity who takes drugs, then takes money to do anti-drug adverts, then keeps taking drugs.

The concept of advertising in Power Slam is mad anyway. On one page, there'll be a full-page ad for the latest WWE pay-per-view on DVD, then overleaf, Fin doing four pages on how shit that pay-per-view is. Silver Vision must think that, even to PS readers, a picture of a DVD carries more weight than the editor's opinion of a show.

Buying an ad should never mean you're immune from criticism.

I edit the UK's official PlayStation mag, in which publishers take out ads for their upcoming releases very month. Doesn't affect the scores because our responsibility is to our readership, not them. (And they understand and accept that.)

Sure it's the same where Fin and Power Slam are concerned.

  7. Due to the fact that you should pay for it, and no one can be bothered to type it all up, no. The gist seems to be the note, that Benoit had serious drug problems (see GHB rumours), that Johnny Grunge was a peacemaker in Chris and Nancy's relationship, didn't help when he died, that the police believe he killed Daniel with the Crossface, that Benoit was a regular contributor of rumours to the sheets.

Thanks Daniel.I have been reporting on this case for The Sun/Sun Online and am desperate to get everything as accurate as possible, which is why I need to see what Meltzer said in full rather than a summary.
I was hoping you'd say it wasn't you who'd been reporting the updates in The Sun, Simon. I've been really disappointed in its coverage of the Benoit story over the last week given how well you know your wrestling. I realise you've got an editor to satisfy and need to have a sensationalist edge because that's how the tabs work, but the 'roid rage' links have been particularly disappointing - it's obvious to any wrestling fan that while a link to steroids can't be ruled out, this is very unlikely to be an act based solely upon a fit of steroid-induced anger. :(See you soon - hopefully to talk about something other than this.BW
  8. This is my last post here. To all those saying "rot in hell Benoit" or holding to that sentiment I say you are a bunch of cunts! How the fuck do you know what was going on in his mind to push him over the edge? I'm not saying that he is innocent, the evidence clearly suggests otherwise. I'm not saying that it's not a tragedy that Nancy and Daniel died, of course if is! But, as I have said before, this guy was clearly not naturally persuaded towards killing his kids or wife, otherwise this would have happened sooner. What has clearly happened is something has happened to affect Benoit and he has reacted in the worst way possible. That doesn't make him a bad man, it just makes this an awful thing to happen and I pray for all 3 of them, that they find peace after death.I think Big Dave said it best:"RIP Nancy (who was a criminally underated manager) and Daniel neither of them deserved to get caught up in this and I really do hope that Chris can find some kind of peace."Now please, can the idiots stop overreacting, let those who are still in shock deal with it as best they can and respect the fact that 3 people died this past weekend in tragic circumstances. Even though it looks like Benoit did it, it doesn't make his final hours or death any less tragic!

I appreciate the sentiments you're offering, but are people really overreacting? To two murders?!!! It doesn't matter what's going on in someone's mind, there is simply no way to justify extinguishing the lives of your wife and child. If the front page of a newspaper tomorrow was about Andy Average killing his wife and seven year old son then committing suicide, he'd be condemned as scum, regardless of whether he'd gone a bit loopy or not. There's no excuse for what Benoit did, none whatsover, whatever his mindset was. And as a massive fan of his, I take no pleasure in saying that. :(
  9. As the WWE has only in the past given passed wrestlers a single memorial show i would be surprised if they changed that in this circumstance.

When Eddie passed away, both Raw and SmackDown were memorial shows.
I appreciate what you are saying here but things are a bit different with Benoit's. There is a large cloud hanging over this one. i think whoever stated they should take a few weeks off has got it spot on. This means they don't do anything thay may embarass them in the future, it gives the other wrestlers time to come to terms with this and lastly (and less importantly) it gives Creative the time to come up with a totally new direction.
Sorry, I wasn't saying that SmackDown should be a memorial show - I think that WWE have done the right thing in planning to run a matches-only broadcast. I was just correcting the above poster.

  11. I've been reading people's responses to the situation accross 3 different forums since last night, and I can't believe how quickly everyone has jumped to condemn him.

Really?I'd say the opposite - I've been F5ing this thread throughout the day and it seems that those who have condemned him have been flamed for doing so and told to wait for the facts. It's an honorable sentiment, and I'm not going to demonise or grant high praise to the bloke until the news is 100 per cent confirmed because I've no interested in getting in a war of words when three people including a defenseless young boy have just lost their life in tragic circumstances, but it certainly looks ominous. The police couldn't get in without forcing entry and even then had difficulty because of the guard dogs, so it appears to be an in-house job by either Chris or Nancy. As a poster said on here, people rip wrestlers like Snitsky apart for being a shit wrestler yet are willing to give someone they like temporary benefit of the doubt over what looks like a double murder. That attitude is a tiny bit strange.Mental or not, if - IF - he committed this atrocity then nothing he's ever done in the ring will make it forgiveable. If he didn't, then WWE have done a terrible thing to mislead people by reporting their belief as fact. But then they and the police know more than we do - maybe all the clues were in those texts to Chavo.
  12. I had absolutely no idea until I put Raw on via Sky Plus at ten to nine this morning.Absolutely stunning, and obviously not in a good way. A waste of three lives, in particular his poor young son.A true ring great but if the initial reports turn out to be confirmed then it'll be hard to remember him positively given the circumstances around his demise. :(

  13. Can anyone tell me why WWE Classics was dropped by Sky?

If you're talking about actual WW(F)E classics then it was as a result of the lawsuit with the Panda people- the constant references to "the WWF" and all that. If you're talking about more recently, WCW Classics simply wasn't doing the ratings, and fell foul of the new TV deal with WWE...
Ace. Cheers.Another thing - it The Fink just reserved for Wrestlemanias now or does he do certain other PPVs too?
  14. Certainly sounds dodgy:Q: HI, CAN YOU TELL ME IF THIS IS A REAL KAMALA WITH MOON OR IF IT IS A REPRODUCTION, ALSO I I WAS TO BUY IT AND IT WAS NOT REAL CAN I GET A REFUND. THANKS Answered on 22-Mar-05 A: HI THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTION, I AM SELLING THIS FOR A FRIEND, I THINK IT IS A REPRODUCTION. NO SORRY I WILL NOT OFFER A REFUND, AS IT IS NOT STATED IF IT IS REAL OR NOT AS I DONT KNOW.
  15. Great thread.I too used to run my own little promotion, in which I pushed both Papa Shango and Virgil to the moon. :omg: Looking back, I've no idea why.Warrior held the Championship for ages. Used to love the white trunks figure that could do a Gorilla Press.Must visit my mum's and dig these out one day.

  16. Well, what an event that was.The occasional let-down - the Cruiserweight Open was rushed (and Ultimo fell over twice during his entrance!) and both tag team title matches were pointless. But as for the good points....- Benoit and Guerrero's finale. Well, Benoit and Guerrero THROUGHOUT, in fact. Crikey, you'd almost believe it was real. I was marking out at the end of both matches. And to be fair to Triple H, give him his due; he put in a fantastic main event performance for the first time in ages.- Never been a great fan of Trish, but she looked absolutely steaming hot after her heel turn and lip-licking kiss with Christian. Yum.- Undertaker's return. Alright, so the match was a squash but good to see him back, with druids and Paul Bearer in tow. Sadly, the camera truck completely missed the moment he sat up, taking a little bit of gloss off the performance.- Vinny Mac doing everything right - taking the acclaim without forcing himself onto the card. Well played.- The Rock's motivational speech to Foley, complete with mimicking Hurricane and Rosey. Fantastic stuff.- Stacy Keibler. Mmmmmmmmmmm.- Cena injecting some real passion into the US Title after the lousy Big Show run. - Finally, Bobby Heenan's Hall of Fame speech about wishing Monsoon was there. Sent tingles down my spine.
