  1. Decent number one and a good list overall, a little disappointed about the lack of votes for There Will Be Blood, but I understand it's a rather divisive film.

Just bought four films on the basis of this thread (Once upon a time, Seven, Jesse James, Aliens) like I would imagine many others have. So congratulations on the thread Gladstone, at the very least this thread has helped a little wit the economic fortunes of the likes of HMV.

  2. I've recently got round to watching The Soprano's and it is fucking excellent. Though, i'm sure you all know that already.Just started season 3, though, and the weird semi-animated head w/ spliced together old dialogue they used for Livia's last scene (as she'd snuffed it in real life) is awful. I'm not sure laughter is what they were after..

    Spoiler tags you cumstain.

Dan Aykroyd now saying he'll just recast Bill Murray's part in Ghostbusters 3

by Sean O'Neal February 13, 2012 The spring of 2012 approaches and with it the promise, after months of seeding with rumors and watering with anguished tears and vodka, that Ghostbusters 3 will finally take root, sprouting a whole new branch of the franchise that you can then jab into your eye. And as it

  4. Louis CK has only been mentioned ONCE in this single thread, which is a disgrace. If anyone's looking for something a little bit more unique than the usual "toasters, what are they all about" shite on the tv at the moment, I would recommend Hans Teeuwen, who's entire stand up set can be found on youtube, the first part being this:

Then there's Jon Glaser, here's a link for that: Part 1:

    Part 2:

  5. This is from the Daily Mail, I shit you not:

Right-wingers tend to be less intelligent than left-wingers, and people with low childhood intelligence tend to grow up to have racist and anti-gay views, says a controversial new study.

Conservative politics work almost as a 'gateway' into prejudice against others, say the Canadian academics.

The paper analysed large UK studies which compared childhood intelligence with political views in adulthood across more than 15,000 people.

The authors claim that people with low intelligence gravitate towards right-wing views because they make them feel safe.

Crucially, people's educational level is not what determines whether they are racist or not - it's innate intelligence, according to the academics.

Social status also appears to play no part.

The study, published in Psychological Science, claims that right-wing ideology forms a 'pathway' for people with low reasoning ability to become prejudiced against groups such as other races and gay people.

'Cognitive abilities are critical in forming impressions of other people and in being open minded,' say the researchers.

'Individuals with lower cognitive abilities may gravitate towards more socially conservative right-wing ideologies that maintain the status quo.

'It provides a sense of order.'

The study, by academics at Brock University in Ontario, Canada, used information from two UK studies from 1958 and 1970 , where several thousand children were assessed for intelligence at age 10 and 11, and then asked political questions aged 33.

The 1958 National Child Development involved 4,267 men and 4,537 women born in 1958.

The British Cohort Study involved 3,412 men and 3,658 women born in 1970.

It's the first time the data from these studies has been used in this way.

In adulthood, the children were asked whether they agreed with statements such as, 'I wouldn't mind working with people from other races,' and 'I wouldn't mind if a family of a different race moved next door.'

They were also asked whether they agreed with statements about typically right-wing and socially conservative politics such as, 'Give law breakers stiffer sentences,' and 'Schools should teach children to obey authority.'

The researchers also compared their results against a 1986 American study which included tests of cognitive ability and questions assessing prejudice against homosexuals.

The authors claim that there is a strong correlation between low intelligence both as a child and an adult, and right-wing politics.

The authors also claim that conservative politics is part of a complex relationship that leads people to become prejudices.

'Conservative ideology represents a critical pathway through which childhood intelligence predicts racism in adulthood,' says the paper.

'In psychological terms, the relation between intelligence and prejudice may stem from the propensity of individuals with lower cognitive ability to endorse more right wing conservative ideologies because such ideologies offer a psychological sense of stability and order.'

'Clearly, however, all socially conservative people are not prejudiced, and all prejudiced persons are not conservative.'

  6. Yes, some of us find him picking on a disabled child unfunny, some of us do.

Tramadol Nights has been cancelled, his next program on Channel 4 has been cancelled before airing and of course once he reaches 40 at the end of this year he'll be retiring his stand up tours, since very few comedians are funny after 40, according to him.

  7. Here's the joke in question:

"Jordan and Peter Andre are still fighting each other over custody of Harvey - eventually one of them will lose and have to keep him." Then adding "I have a theory about the reason Jordan married a cage fighter - she needed a man strong enough to stop Harvey from f***ing her!"

Now, that's nothing to do with "middle England" being over sensitive, is it? There's usually some humour to be found in Boyle's more controversial jokes, that one doesn't.

  8. Doug Stanhope, Tim Key, Stewart Lee, Bill Hicks are all available via DVD. Jerry Sadowitz and Daniel Kitson are superb too, but have no DVD's out so you'll have to download them illegally.

I'm suprised Chilli's not a big Leary fan.

  9. If a thread has passed the three pages on the off topic section of the boards, how can one retrieve it? In this case, the thread would be "What have you been listening to recently?" I very much doubt many in the UKFF will be able to sleep tonight without knowing what my thoughts are on Nicola Roberts' Cinderella Eyes.

  10. Funny People had an interesting promise and could have been great if it wasnt so drawn out and goddamn long. Went for nearly 3 hours with ad breaks and there was no need for much of the rambling that went precisely nowhere and much of the sub plot stuff was horrendously unnecessary. Seth Rogen was okay, but irritating as Ira, Adam Sandler did okay in a more serious role, must get round to watching Punch Drunk Love at some point. But the rest of it dragged on and on and on and on. 20-30 minutes could have been lost from the running time as some unnecessary stuff was cut out or shortened including the whole Eric Bana husband stuff and it could have been a really good film. As it stands though average with some really good bits but way way way too long

The main issue with Funny People is that everyone in it were just such unlikeable dicks. Also it's such a meandering nothing of a film, I found myself just not caring about the film at all. Still, it's better than Grown Ups.

That's not the issue with it at all. The main issue is that the film goes on far too long. Once Simmons finds out he's cured, it could have ended at that point and it would have been an enjoyable, funny film. Appatow's success has probably led to him being given free reign to do whatever the hell he wants though, meaning he spent another hour destroying the great first hour and a half of the film.

  11. The Producers.

Well this is a very funny film, I'd already seen the Curb episode though so that sort of ruined the plot for me a little bit. Still, it's a very enjoyable film, in particular the "Springtime for Hitler" song.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Superb, right down my street of arty-farty films. A great cast too, except for Elijah Wood. I find Jim Carrey far more likeable when he does more restrained, serious acting, like in this and Truman Show as opposed to his gurning in "comedy" films.

    Hunger.

Very powerful stuff, with a brilliant performance from Michael Fassbender in particular. The film is directed beautifully, which isn't suprising considering Steve McQueen's background as an artist. I can't wait to see "Shame" either, whenever my local cinema stops showing The Iron Lady relentlessly. Shanice (my girlfriend) and I (Trevor) had a lovely piece of chocolate during it too, very tasty.

    Day of the Dead.

It was O.K I guess. The main baddie in the film was pretty terrible character, plus a zombie going around shooting a gun was a rather ridicilous sight.

  12. All interaction I've had with Fin has been very negative. I'm a sports journalist and e-mailed him a few times regarding possible freelance work and he didn't reply which is rude enough. I sent another one a few months later and he gave me a snotty response along the lines of, "Look, there are just no writing jobs at PowerSlam, get it?".

As others have said, he just seems like a very bitter man with no happiness in his life at all. If PS ever hits the deck then I've no idea where he'll get his sad little kicks from.

    Not biased are we?

  13. Commando.

This "film" is a shockingly lude, explicit hour and a half, which I won't get back. Like so many Arnoaeld Schwarzanegger films, Commando glorifies violence in a very irresponsible manner. It's rife from beginning to end with shocking language, unrealistic scenes and incredibly wooden acting from Arnoaeld and Vernon Wells in particular.

    4/10.

  14. Oh yes because people of course do not swear in real life so profanity in films is pointless, shit when I'm talking with my mates I swear twice as much as they did in this film and I'm a dumbass welsh guy who couldn't scare a fish with a frying pan, where as these fella's are I believe being made out to be quite nasty gangster type geezers who you wouldn't want to mess with, it would be a bit far fetched for them to be going around saying "oh I say mate how naughty it is of you to go having an affair with another man's wife, you rotten person you". I hate it when people go on about swearing in films, for fuck sake stop being a twat and grow a pair and if you dont like it then stick to Harry shitting Potter and leave us grown up's to it.

Also why the fuck would a kid be watching this film?. I can imagine alot of kids being fans of Ray Winstone and John Hurt, "oh mummy I dont want to watch Harry Potter lets go and watch that film where Carlin from Scum tortures the shit out of a frenchman.

Right rant over, good film though fairplay

A disgusting, profanity-laden post which I won't be replying to due to the sheer amount of foul language. Let's hope no children are reading that post of yours.
