  1. The origins behind the names of some moves have been bugging me recently. For example, anyone know where the term "lariat" comes from? Similarly, "diamond dust", "mare" as in snap, or head mare. I suppose the list could go on and on.

  2. What do you want me to do Jon, take a lie detector test? I had nothing to do with your show going wrong. If you don't believe me, then there's not much I can do about that, but that's the truth.

He's not saying that though is he. He said you knew what was happening and then aided in wrecking his reputation online with a smear campaign.

  3. I remember this well! It was the biggest news of the time! Thanks for posting Big Benny! Here are his comments about the fiasco posted on here a few days after:

Well it's been a hectic few days..

I'm here, good and well (theoretically speaking). I was not arrested and I am not bankrupt, although I probably would have gotten a better night's kip in a cell! I'm just here now to show my face, I'm not hiding, I am personally answering all calls on the ticket hotline. I'm just here to tell you what happened from my perspective and clear up a few things.

Let's not beat around the bush and talk about the ring. Simon (Steve Lynskey) you are LYING, although I don't know how much is truth and how much isn't. When I first booked the show, I booked Jake's 20x20 ring, based down south. So then I am told Jake's ring has been stolen (I'll cut the story short on that one I don't know what happened) - then I hear it is in Steve Lynskey's possession, ask what's going on and got fed some story I'd rather not go into.. so I ask whether the deal is still on. I am told it is not, as the ring needs new wooden boards, so I had to find another one. So I phoned up Jem from Brawl, who has a Highspots 16x16 ring in Northampton and booked him for that. Jem would have been here it was just a case of whether we were using his own van or a hired van. Everything's cool and I wish it was left at that, but oh no..

I get a call from Steve Lynskey a week before the show, saying in actual fact I can have the ring, for

  4. I'm told his cardio is very good, but i think i'd rather cheer his opponent on over him. He's from my neck of the woods and is a complete dick. I'd be glad to see him taken down and beaten.

I thought he was set to debut at 85, i guess something must've changed. If he sticks around, you'd think a much stiffer test than the ones he's passed already has got to be coming his way.

  5. Watch out for the UK's Karl Ethrington in this. 7-0 MMA record, all wins coming in the first round, and all under 60 seconds! He's a killer, and a 2nd Dan in Judo.

EDIT: Can't actually see him on the list of fighters for the event. I thought he was debuting for them here, anyone know what happened?

  6. I knew you'd know the scoop Ian! Thanks mate.

They must've REALLY liked him to have had him back in 98 after leaving, or at least had a plan for a big push. But than again, i suppose it was a lot of one-upmanship between WCW / WWF on who they could sign.

Absolutely going to have to dig up his matches with Hansen.

  7. I'm really interested in finding out more about the Big Bossman and his 15 years with the top two.

He spent 5 years with WWF before going to WCW for 5 another years before coming back to WWF in '98 for a final 5 year stint. I know he was a good hand, but he seems a strange person for Vince to want back in the Attitude era.

Was he well thought of in the office? Was he doubling up as a road agent, or office staff? What were the terms behind his first WWF departure? I know Vince kept taking him off TV to lose weight, but was this some of the reason why he left?

Any stories, info you've got would be appreciated!

  8. I was watching Syxx v Guerrero Ladder Match from WCW/nWo Souled Out 1997 and cannot for the life of me remember why there were silly voice overs throughout the match, and probably the night if i'd watched all the show.

I know that the WCW wrestlers weren't "allowed" their own entrance music, but during the match they'd be a voice over saying "LOSER" and on Eddie's entrance they introduced him as "the Mexican jumping bean".

I assume it was all nWo stuff, unless anyone knows of another crazy WCW reason?

  9. Watched Football Factory and Insidious just recently, here's what I thought...

Insidious - Started off very promising, some really creepy bits. I'd not been to see a horror at the movies for years and I was really enjoying the build up in the early going. However, I couldn't shake the nagging line they're running with in all the ads of "It's not the house that's haunted - it's your son!". If this were true, surely this was the whole storyline with it's arse hanging out of the window for all to see. Where could they go from there? Well, where they went from there was totally and utterly downhill. The first sort of 1/4 of the movie was really pretty good, the rest, despite some decent scary images at times was - undoubtedly, awful.

If you're thinking about watching it, don't. Has anyone else seen it yet? If so, what did you think? For me, 3.5 / 10

Football Factory - For some reason, this film had always escaped me, finally got round to watching it on Sunday when it was on the TV. Even though i've got no time for Danny Dyer, he was pretty decent in this and the other characters were interesting and brutal. However, there were some bits like his confrontation with the guy who copped the baseball bat in the back of the head that lead nowhere and the end fight scene was a massive let down I thought. It built and built toward the Millwall vs. Chelsea only for it to be dampened out quite quickly.

I enjoyed the film but don't feel as though it's worth all the praise i'd heard about it. 6 / 10

  10. Lincoln Lawyer

Watched this last night, really wasn't expecting much but was left pleasantly surprised. The acting among the supporting cast was a bit wooden at times, although a decent enough performance from Matthew McConaughey. Worth a trip to the cinema for a good, original story that doesn't take too much thinking about. 7.5/10

ive genuinally enjoyed everything ive ever seen McConaughey in...granted i aint seen his rom-com efforts but everything else ive enjoyed, never gets the credit i think he deserves.

I was sat in the cinema last night trying to remember the last McConaughey film that was any good (which eventually spawned the My Best Film? thread) and my immediate thought echoed yours, he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Even his rom-com stuff is decent.

  11. Watched a couple of movies recently...

    Down Terrace

Was really quite excited to see this. Billed as a "the best British gangster film in years" / "a british Sopranos" so I was a tad dissapointed to find that the film offered little difference to any other British film coming across as trying a bit too hard. The whole of the first 3/4ers of the movie are based in the same house and i started to get frustrated with it and lose interest, and then it really picked up to an awesome finish. Really decent stuff toward the end, aa solid 7/10.

    8 Mile

Not watched this in years and decided i'd give it a re-watch over the weekend. Absolutely loved it the first time round and for that reason, i wish i'd never watched it again. Not a great movie by any stretch, i think i got carried away with all the freestyle and rapping because at least that's awesome! 4/10

  12. Unfortunately though your opinion is completely invalid because you didn't like Taken, which is fuckin badass. What twist did you want? Why did there need to be a twist? You're totally wrong, M-dudz Shamylam. So sadly I still don't know if Unknown is worth a watch or not...

It wouldn't seem much of a twist if i wanted it to happen! But, the film did seem to have "twist potential" thought the step dad or even big Liam himself may have had something to do with it.

I did like the fight scenes in Taken and the car chase scenes, but the same scenes in Unknown are actually dire. The whole film should be renamed Unnecessary.

Car chase scene in Unknown: reversing saloon car outruns 4x4 driving forward, WTF?

Kill scenee are also weak, but if you've got 2 hours to waste, yeah! Go watch it :p

  13. There is apparently actually going to be a Taken 2. Hope that's awesome as the first.

Can't quite see what the plot of 2 would be about.

    Unless:

She gets kidnapped again, but then its probably her own fucking fault and he should be a better father for allowing it.

    ");document.close();

Having unfortunately wasted 2 hours of my life watching Unknown, I can confirm it's not Taken 2.

I'd not seen Taken, but heard some good stuff about it so watched it when it was on Ch.4 this week, aside the decent kills and fight scenes, I was begging for a twist, but no. I wasn't a fan. I got the twist I was after in Unknown, but was left with the sound advice of "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" ringing in my ears. Where the twist was OK, it was left far too late in the movie and as a result there were more holes in Unknown than in a block of Swiss cheese. Sky Movies, Tuesday night film. NOT one for the cinema, save your money, it's shit.

  14. Watched True Grit last night, really good film.

Jeff Bridges is fantastic, this his 3rd film on the bonuce he has really stood out and excelled in.

I'd purposely not read about the plot before going so was a little surprised to see a 14 year old girl as the lead female, but after a slow-ish start, a host of eccentric characters burst out, and the story develops well with some great dialogue and use of language. Some great looking powerful scences too, i've not seen the original or read the book but by all accounts, the 2011 version is better than the 1969 one. I'm really pleased to see a good Western in modern day cinema too. Two thumbs up.

  15. Saw The Fighter the other night, Christian Bale is superb in it and deserves all his Oscar adulation - it's worth seeing just for him.

Two days later, i'm still not sure if I really liked the story or not. It was a bit odd at times and i didn't buy into Marky Mark being a boxer either, shame since apparently he'd been training for 4 years for it... fight scenes were limited (probably because Whalberg wasn't convincing in the ring) but overall, i enjoyed it. Nice touch in the credits at the end.
