Spatular
About that Feb PPV main event match, I couldn't remember it when asked and assumed it was great because it was an Aagan/CMAX six man, but I think I'm fondly remembering their stuff from the TV blocks rather than this one. Is it the Feb PPV that has the 'ropey' finish? Yep, I'm pretty sure that's the one. Nice idea in theory...I think Magu was OK but he suffered by comparison to his challengers. Even Araken's a much more polished all-rounder than he is. :(And less of the Fujii hate! Have you not seen Rey de Parejas 2004 yet?
Paid Members JLM Posted March 14, 2005 Author Paid Members Share Posted March 14, 2005 No . I'm told "the bulk of" my big big DVD order will be sent out on Wednesday. My plan is to do a big DG marathon over the two week easter break, with blocks of DG broken up by the big NJ, AJ and Osaka shows and bits of the CHIKARA tag dealy with the Osaka Pro guys and Milanito. I tend to do this now that I'm at uni, a big flurry of viewing then long droughts. Once I'm up to date I'll try and keep up from then on though, I hate being this far behind. Also it wasn't meant to be Fujii hate, I like him and his slapping ways, he just hasn't been one for standout performances from what I've seen. I liked him in the feud with Aagan as the heroic fat guy giving it his all and against Magu as the unsung CMAX fat guy giving it his... yeah. But generally he's a bit of a filler guy, which he can't be blamed for as not everyone is going to be a singles ace, and thus his challenge for Magu's title was one of his few chances to shine on his own.EDIT: Just noticed Carbomb's post. Spreading the love to the people throough log-based ramblings.
Spatular
Thanks to this thread, I've just placed an order with JFFC for VamoAmi #55, and the newest DG (Blood Generation), so I can get started with my DragonGate viewing. Coolness, but as a recent jumping-on point I'd instead recommend November 2004. Both the TV and the PPV were superb.

Paid Members JLM Posted March 20, 2005 Author Paid Members Share Posted March 20, 2005 Regarding the K-Ness/Darkness dragon thing. Darkness Dragon lost a mask vs mask match against Dragon Kid and was forced to drop his old hood. He wrestled as Darkness Dragon using the mask as entrance attire then wrestling without it for a bit, then he got a new mask and renamed himself K-Ness to get around not being able to wear the old Darkness Dragon mask. Kness was what the Japanese fans ended up calling Darkness Dragon anyway so it was an obvious name to go with. and the rudos fall from cockiness --> assured confidence --> some nerviness showing --> real tension --> sheer panic, was great to watch.See this is something that confuses me about people who watch one Toryumon multiman and presume it's a meaningless spotfest in the style of the SAT. Although they're done at a breakneck pace, when they're done well you can follow the shifts in momentum and see that everyone is gradually being worn down and getting more and more desperate to win. So by the end, when no one has a lot left, they bust out their big hitting moves in a frantic push to win the match quickly rather than just to make everyone go "oooh". So yeah, a big multiman sprint can still "tell a story" if the effort is made. I'd like to see Yossino as the pretty-boy rudo too, I think he's got the swagger and punchable face to pull it off. Milano's main upper body finisher (where he wrenches their arm behind their back into a vicious hammer lock of sorts) is the creatively titled "AT Lock". If it wasn't that it was one of the Italian stretches (anywhere from 1-44, I forget which is which, understandably I feel). I loved the threeway between Owashi, JUN & Condotti Shuji. And now they're gone. All gone. big tubby vortex of grumpy power Best Owashi description ever. Glad you're largely enjoying the shows, keep them thoughts a-comin'.

Guest John
Ta for the feedback, guys. You two are so enthusiastic when it comes to toryumon; more people need to post about it. I did a search for old Toryumon topics - jffc, Momoe, Adam Young, Pete Scott, etc... where are you?! Get posting, you lazy fucks. Â Anyway, my blistering trundle through Toryumon continues with #55, the first half of which I watched this morning. Ponderings, considerations and deductions... Â The opening tag-match - Susumu Yokosuka & Ryo Saito vs Mochi & Dragon Kid was a lot of fun; the rudo pair are both great, particularly Yokosuka, who's fast becoming one of my favourites. I still think Dragon Kid's bland, but I see that he has his place, and he gets beaten up well enough, I guess. The crazy huracanrana variation finisher he uses is pretty cool, too. I'm undecided on Mochi; I liked him a lot in the three-way on the first tape, when he was heel (or, at least, I thought he was; either way, he was a lot less overtly 'good'), but he's bored me in the last two matches as a face. Whether that's simply by virtue of the fact that he was playing the good guy, which I instinctively shun, or because he just wasn't as good, I'm not sure. The book's still out on him. Â I didn't even give the Stalker Ichikawa match a chance, ffw'd straight through it. Sorry, dougie. Â My favourite drugged-up superheroes return in JUN & TARU vs Second Doi & Araken, in which they impressed, but their opponents were really quite dull and boring. Again, but sorry dougular, I fail to see how Doi could ever be the best guy in the promotion. Araken just looks really manky, all undernourished and pale and balding. TARU's sick piledriver-esque finisher, which Doi received in this match, looked brutal. Maybe Doi injured JUN as some sort of evil retribution on his partner. Â Once again, Horiguchi saved an otherwise poor match: Genki & Magnum TOKYO vs Yossino & Yagi. Magnum does nothing for me, and that he was pushed as the company's top guy for a long time - ahead of other, far more talented guys - is a travesty. I like Yossino, but I can see how he could get pretty boring without a bit of variety, hence a rudo-turn being a good thing. His baker (?!) partner isn't up to much either, and the team suffers from the lack of Milano/Yassini, or even Mori. Â That's it for now, I'll watch the rest of it this week sometime. Spatular
Well, OK. But if I catch you posting about FFing through FloBros matches, there'll be trouble. Again, but sorry dougular, I fail to see how Doi could ever be the best guy in the promotion.Hang on - I said 'hottest', not 'best'! He's been a breakout star for them over the last six months, but he still has some way to go before he catches guys like CIMA and Susumu, either in terms of match quality or general overness.Personally, I never liked Bakery Yagi much either. He was much better once he became a comedy ref than he was as a wrestler. The loaded baguette was always good for a laugh, though.
JFFC
I did a search for old Toryumon topics - jffc, Momoe, Adam Young, Pete Scott, etc... where are you?! Get posting, you lazy fucks. I'm watching from a distance. My memory doesent stretch back as far as #55 and its all just a blur to me so any comments about this period wont be all the great. anywho. Dougs doing a great job of filling in all the blanks :)I'm of much the same opinion as you on Magu, his run at the top was all fine and dandy but hes so unfit its beyond laughable. Fuji even looked fitter then him in their 20+ minute title match.Just watching some of the stuff from late 2004 and hes much better in the mid card entertainment role playing along with guys like Daniel and Michael then as an actual top tier wrestler. Paid Members JLM Posted March 28, 2005 Author Paid Members Share Posted March 28, 2005 So I finally watched some DG today. It was Infinity #2. I skipped ahead to watch Susumu/CIMA and now I'm filling in the gaps before it then going onto the catch up mission proper.Infinity episode 2 then..- The opening theme finishing with a guy going "and you can kiss my ass!" is tremendous, I'd forgotten about that- FloBro vs Genki/Naoki. Jeez, Naoki really gets shat on in this episode. Iwasa gets a near fall on him off a DDT, it's his fault his team loses and he fails to hit his surfing arm drag. This is my first time seeing FloBro's "make the opponent accidentally hit the ref" DQ tactic, good stuff, especially them forcing Tanisaki to slap Yagi right accross the face as he complains about a count. They show Naoki jobbing to other people, transforming into his ultra-camp Waterboys gimmick, doing a hilarious dance then jobbing some more. - TARU vs Shogo "JET~!" Takagi, both now gone. This is a recurring theme. It's a glove match, they do a bit of punching then TARU thinks "screw this", gives Shogo a kicking, rips off the gloves and plants him with the Duuuurriilllaaaaaah. Ruahaha. They also do a little video package highlighting the rise of the Jet phenomenon. He had quite the cult following.- A fun multiman tag affair has Genki pinning CIMA , leading to Genki vs CIMA. The disc kept skipping on my stupid PS2 so I couldn't watch it. I'll get round to it later. - The Catcher Fuji saga is covered, as well as a highlight video of Fuji's previous acts of theft, including Ryo's bike, Yossino's monkey Venezia, BATA-Yan's golden microphone and Milano's invisible dog. Dirty, dirty thief. This leads to...- A totally frantic 31 minute six man tag match of awesomeness between Catcher Fujii/SUWA/CIMA and Susumu/Mochi/Doi. The heat for this is insane for the last 10 minutes, edge of the seat near falls and perfect last second saves. Absolutely exhausting to watch, lots of fun. Susumu gets the win on CIMA eventually following a second JUMBO NO KACHI!, which gives him his reason to put his name forward as a challenger for CIMA's ODG title. - Dragon Kid & Magnum TOKYO vs. Milano Collection AT & YOSSINO This looks to be the main event of an Odaiba show, it goes for two minutes before evil dastardly Aagan run in and assault everyone, because they are bastards. I'll miss them lots. Anyway, Magu's having none of this, which leads to the impromptu match....- Milano Collection AT/Yossino/Dragon Kid/Magu vs YASSHI/Kondo/Owashi/SugawaraThis rocks. Aagan ruled so much, they pissed off everyone and everyone hated them in return. Highlights include Kondo punking out Dragon Kid and being a cocky git, and Dragon Kid doing his Tigermask feint thing then turning to pose and meeting Owashi's shoulder.. splat. Sugawara and Owashi bring the angry hate-filled heeling, YASSHI and Kondo bring the dick heeling. Oh, YASSHI is on his usual great form too, he does that thing where he tags into the match just to dance around and taunt a downed opponent before tagging straight back out. He better still do that in All Japan! - Milano Collection AT & YOSSINO vs. Brother YASSHI & Toru OwashiThis is in that great venue with the eeenormous stained glass window on one side. YASSHI's middle fingers stay up for 89.2% of this. Also he does a double testicular claw to incapacitate both opponents before wiping his hands on referee Yagi's shirt. Owashi does his big tubby vortex of grumpy power (
Spatular
Jeez, Naoki really gets shat on in this episode. Get used to it! The payoff is worth it when it comes, though...Oh, YASSHI is on his usual great form too, he does that thing where he tags into the match just to dance around and taunt a downed opponent before tagging straight back out. He better still do that in All Japan!I think it would be shortly after this that he started grabbing handfuls of his pubes and ball sweat and blowing them in his opponents' faces as he was announced. He better still do that in All Japan, too. :smug:Infinity #3 is even better, BTW. They were on a real mini-hot-streak right about then.
Paid Members JLM Posted March 31, 2005 Author Paid Members Share Posted March 31, 2005 Infinity #3 is even better, BTW. They were on a real mini-hot-streak right about then. You're not wrong there, 2 hours of pure entertainment.- Poor, poor Naoki. Magu looked angry at the match with Stalker being arranged as it seemed set to end Naoki's losing ways. Throwing in the towel, mean bastard. Then... THEN... he gets pinned by Danny Mishima. Pinned! That entrance thing he did with all the other "water boys" in even smaller speedos than his was both the best thing ever and the worst thing ever at the same time... I almost literally could not believe what I was seeing. That'll be an enduring image. - The little showcase of the ODG belt was cool, it really is a swanky, swanky belt, especially with the front opening gate thing going on. - The Mori/Ryo/Sugawara re-cappery makes me mourn the loss of Sugawara. He was so angry and hate-filled towards Antony, and his joy in making him suffer seemed entirely genuine. Was a nice way of drawing Dragon Kid and pals into the anti-Aagan war too. Kondo/YASSHi vs Ryo/Kid was fun. - The Iron Perm Fuji/Doi saga was hilarious stuff. M2K assuming Doi had left them to be with his perm buddy, Fuji costing him matches, Doi unveiling his Iron perm, "AIIPA" rivalling the H-A-G-E chants, Fuji eventually returning Doi's bat as they agree to team.. light-hearted greatness. All good stuff up to this point, however, the highlight of the show was easily the Dragon Scramble~!32 fun-packed minutes, it just had everything. Everything! - Jet going the distance for no particular reason~! - The biggest "lets all slap Don Fujii" spot ever- Aagan pounding Magu and getting the crowd all fired up for his comebacks. Tanisaki trying to be a hero and save Magu only to be unceremoniously dumped out in seconds.- Yossino doing the Frolida corner choke, then getting caught up in their devious ways, joining them in the invisible mime box and helping them get Milano disqualified. I was laughing out loud at that. Milano getting revenge on Yossino later was also pure gold. - Everyone teaming up on YASSHI because he's an obnoxious little prick. Then they do that whip him into the corner then everyone thumps him with a running move in turn thing. Then they try and do it again, YASSHI tells them all where to go and opts to bail out... but Ryo won't let him. Bwahahahaha. - The giant elastic band of doom claims two eliminations - The Florida brothers getting paired with Owashi and being too scared to come out while he's in the aisle. Danny getting thwacked by Owashi and Michael hauling ass and eliminating himself to avoid angry, angry Touru. - Kondo being paired with Mochi and jumping him in the aisle. Then everyone conspiring to eliminate Kondo in short order because they all hate Aagan.- CIMA/Susumu being paired and brawling wildly in the aisle. - Doi helping to eliminate Fujii and laughing at him as he leaves the ring, quickly followed by Fujii vengeance via a low bridge. - Antony/Ryo singling out Sugawara and giving him a bit of a pounding- A giant "everyone puts everyone else in a hold" spot where Magu can't resist kicking everyone in the head, then pays dearly for it when they get up.- The crowd being massively, massively behind Dragon Kid when it comes down to him and YASSHI and finally going nuts when DK bags the win.I loved that, I really did. It had little tasters of every feud/storyline going, plenty of comedy and not a single dull moment. Awesome. :DAnd as if that wasn't enough the show ends with a good and heated six man between CMAX/Final M2K that gives everyone a nice preview of CIMA/Susumu going into their ODG title match. A fine match with a lot of intensity. CIMA being absolutely desperate to get one over on Susumu after being dissed~! by the refused handshake, and a dramatic conclusion with the two Nice Germans in quick succession being necessary to finally end it.As a further bonus they played that fantastic DG anime video in the middle of the episode for the hell of it, which rules.Has to be one of the most enjoyable DG/Toryumon TV blocks I've seen, I'm tempted to watch episode 4 right away but I really should go to sleep now
masstransit
Having a Toryumon/Dragon Gate collection that consists of justToryumon Uno Dos Tres 13.07.03 Toryumon - Toryumon Vs T2P Tape 1 El Numero Uno 20046th Anniversary ShowDragon Gate - 01.08.04 PPV I recently got hold of the two "Best Of" DVD's (partly down to the previous tapes I'd seen but mainly down to this thread) and had a couple of questions.1 - Although I always enjoy the Antony W. Mori and Ryo Saito segments can anyone fill me in on the back story ?2 - As a lot the guys I like to watch most have left the promotion whats the current product like ? Has it suffered from the loss of the Aagan Lisou boys etc ?As regards the Dragon Scramble I can only echo JLM's sentiments and say it was an Awesome fun packed 32 minutes. Spatular
Damn, I nearly watched that battle royale again last night. Now I really wish I had. So much fun. Â But please: let us never speak of the Waterboys entrance again. Â By the way, I came across the 'everyone puts everyone else in a hold' spot in an AJW 9-woman tag from the late 80s the other month. Bizarre and cool to see them do that.
