"Once the election is called, it'll focus minds and the Tories will start closing the gap as people begin to pay more attention..."

And Douglas Ross is quitting as leader of the Scottish Conservatives after the election. Seems the deselection of a Tory because he was admitted to hospital was the breaking point. He seems to prefer Westminster to Holyrood though.Ā

I'm actually a bit torn at this point (not that I should be, my GE vote counts for fuck-all in my constituency). As a leftie, I am sick and tired of Labour kicking us in the teeth and rejecting our support, then gaslighting us for not giving it to "get the Tories out".Ā

On the other hand, I am also sick and tired of the Tories, and I want them out. I've been trying to latch on toĀ anythingĀ that Labour offer that could induce me to vote for them. The only thing I've seen so far is that national energy company, but I really don't trust them to follow through with it.

People talk about how "the lefties don't think strategically" - IĀ do. I think long-term, and strategically it's not in my interest to keep going back to Labour and validating their behaviour, because all that happens is that the cycle repeats in exactly this way. Labour under the so-called "centrists" just ensures more of the same, and we'll be right back in this place again in 20 or more years' time, when, once again, they've helped the Tories and the media to scupper another left-wing candidate.

But then there also comes the harsh dose of reality: maybe I have to accept that I will never have anywhere close to what I want politically, and that the best I or any socialist can hope for in our lifetimes is a constant revolving door of turds followed by rotten veg followed by turds again.

It should be pointed out that GB Energy isnā€™t anything resembling nationalisation, itā€™s an investment vehicle for the private sector for green energy. Itā€™s not like youā€™ll be able to switch your energy supplier to GB Energy.Ā

Iā€™m well aware I wonā€™t see anything remotely close to my political leanings achieved via our electoral system, but itā€™s about where is the compromise line for you? Because the more you compromise and endorse parties and policies not aligned with you, the further youā€™ll be from achieving your preferred policies. Itā€™s the ā€œYou owe us your voteā€ approach. Donā€™t make me tap the ā€œPublic Transport Analogyā€ sign again!!

Fuck's sake.

Absolutely, which is why, until recently, I wasn't torn at all. I was intent on voting for the Greens or TUSC.Ā

I'm still leaning that way - for me, the best possible realistic scenario is that the Greens and maybe some independents get some seats and force Labour into some kind of coalition with them.Ā

But there comes a point when the news gets to you, and you start wondering why you bother.

I've even considered joining the Co-operative Party andĀ onlyĀ them, to try to re-establish something of a leftie presence in Labour that can't just be purged by the leadership. But it still feels like I'd be on a hiding to nothing.

The candidate followed this up by very clearly making a joke about coconuts ("I have a plan to make sure at least one coconut is removed from its perch this year"), which he then deleted and claimed everyone was reading something into it which he didn't mean.

The Lib Dem manifesto has me whelmed. Some decent stuff in there but some of it maybe not as far as it needs to go and some of it Iā€™m not keen on at all. Like I said earlier in the thread, itā€™s almost a safe neutral bet for those looking for a non-red or blue option that isnā€™t as radical as a Green or Reform (that pro-Nazi thing today though, fucking woof).

I actually got chatting with our local Green representative and while he seems decent enough, I think one of the downfalls of the Greens getting a butt in every seat this election is maybe the local selections arenā€™t particularly individually strong. After a ten minute chat on Sunday I have no idea about his own personal goals or previous achievements. Heā€˜s only been in the area a few years too, as opposed to the Labour candidate for example who was born and raised here. Iā€™d like someone who knows the area or it might all be generalised. Maybe time will tell for him.
