Maybe I'm completely off, but are they trialing sonething so that in the future, you can wear a VR headset and actually be in the 'crowd'? Why you would want to do that, I'm not sure!

I would've thought, if you were going to do something like that, you'd have it feeding from a ref cam instead - can't get any closer to the action than that, really.

EDIT: Or they put mini-cameras on top of four of the cage's corners, to give a full 360-degree view?

It would be motion sickness central if you watched a full show in ref cam VR. At the very least, there's a reason why we watch the polished editing and camera shots that they give us, as its a much more enjoyable viewing experience.

Isn't all that Meta VR stuff things where you can stand around with your headset on, and be in the same 'room' as your virtual friends? Maybe some sort of trial where you and your friends are 'together' watching it through your Avatar

Yeah took that out of the opening post yesterday.

Got a feeling Yan Xiaonan might derail Dern again tonight. I don’t even rate Yan that highly but I can see Dern struggling to get the submission early and if she does, based on the later rounds of the Rodriguez fight, I don’t have that much confidence in her cardio holding up. Could see Yan nicking a decision just based on having more left in the tank down the stretch. Saying that, Yan hasn’t gone 5 rounds herself yet so who knows? I just hope it’s a better fight in practice than it looks on paper.

Got a good feeling about it, lots across there has my interest. Most of all probably Davis/Borschaev. The hype on Borschev cooled massively after losing against Diakase, but Diakase litereally held him down for 3 rounds, this Davis fight has my attention, Borschev is a surprising underdog considering Davis is probably going to engage in a standup fight here.

Latifi/Oleinik is going to be a sloppy superbowl too. Count me in.

Yan Xiaonan ruined the Mackenzie Dern comeback tour then.

I had it a draw myself. I had Yan winning rounds 1, 3 and 4 but the 5th was a definite 10-8 for Dern to me. If that wasn’t a 10-8 then I don’t know what the point of 10-8s even are. Still, it’s gone down as a win for Yan and should bag her another biggish fight. I enjoyed the fight and I saw improvements from both, to be fair. This was the best Yan has looked from what I recall of her previous fights. And Dern looked a lot better through the later rounds than she did against Marina Rodriguez a year ago.

As for what’s next…maybe Yan vs Jessica Andrade? That’d work. Maybe Dern can fight Michelle Waterson or something? Preferably not in a 5 rounder though. Or do Rose Namajunas against one of them.

Brown vs Trinaldo went pretty much how I expected. A Brown win but Trinaldo, as always, made him fucking graft for it. Thought it was close.

Seen cries of robbery, and like with most fights that get called a robbery, I’m not feeling it. I felt like it all hinged on the second round. They split the other two for me but that second was the swing round and it was close. Could see the case either way. I’d have to rewatch and I’ll be honest, I’m not gonna 🤣 I like both but I did kind of find myself rooting for ‘Uncle Trinaldo’ as it went on. Especially with Brown having the huge height advantage, youth on his side and still grabbing the fence. Not to be. This was Trinaldo’s last fight on his contract and, it might seem weird saying this about a 44 year old man, but I kind of hope they keep him around. If he still wants to fight of course. He’s still going strong and providing tough tests for these up and comers. He’s never been ‘in the mix’ and never will be but I don’t feel like he’s declined significantly at all. He’s stayed consistent and is still a handful and a real good barometer for guys coming up in the Welterweight division.

Raoni Barcelos had a really strong showing. Completely shut Trevin Jones down to the point he became almost timid to throw anything back for big chunks of the fight. Battered him. A return to form for Barcelos after a couple of decision losses. Keep seeing talk of him as a prospect which is funny because he’s 35. Exciting fighter to watch when he’s ‘on’ but I think he’s found his level. He’s not the second coming of Aldo, or even Barboza, that I’ve seen him referred to as in the past but I expect he’ll provide entertaining undercard fights for a little bit yet. This was good from him but I think Jones being so gun-shy and allowing Barcelos to tee off kind of flattered his performance a bit.

Sodiq Yusuff made very short work of Octagon newbie Don Shainis. 30 seconds is all it took for him to slap on the fight ending guillotine.

D4-EA9-D30-6-BAA-4852-9-E15-345-AFF05762

Sucks for Shainis but I was happy to see Yusuff get the quick win after his biggish fight with Chikadze went tits up. Presuming Yusuff didn’t get too banged up in camp, maybe they can rebook that Chikadze fight now for one of the end of year cards.

Mike Davis vs Slava Claus was so deflating to watch. After seeing the way Diakiese ragdolled Borshchev and faced such little resistance, I was under no illusions that his ceiling wasn’t exactly high. Especially in a division like 155. But still, I was hoping we’d at least get a few fun fights out of it first before the bubble completely burst for good. Seems the party is over already though. The Diakiese loss made it so obvious that Slav’s got fuck all on the ground that any opponent going forward would be a fool not to exploit that. You could see a few times that Borshchev’s been working on it, he was trying. But he’s just too far behind in that area and, now everyone knows it, he’s fucked. It’s not like he’s a Diaz or Condit type who has bad defensive wrestling but can threaten off their back so there’s at least some deterrent to taking them down. With Borshchev, there’s very little resistance to the takedown and zero threat when you get him down. I didn’t think Davis looked great either though, in all honesty. Saw some people on Twitter bigging up his wrestling, which was quite amusing. Slav, bless him, has got to have one of the worst grappling games on the roster. If anything Davis should’ve had even less trouble and probably should’ve been able to force a finish. Benefit of the doubt and all that given that Davis was coming off a long layoff. But I’m not so sure about him after this one. Didn’t really get his post-fight interview either, blaming his lack of activity on not having a big social media following? He’s been out nearly 2 years because of a lack of followers on Twitter and Insta? Come on.

If you skipped the prelims, and I wouldn’t have blamed you, they actually turned out really enjoyable!

Daniel Santos vs John Castaneda was the pick of the bunch. And the FOTN officially and in my opinion. Great stuff. Castaneda impressed me last time out dismantling Miles Johns and, while I didn’t really remember much about Santos, he’s a product of Chute Boxe so I was always gonna kind of root for him. He didn’t disappoint…

Vintage Chute Boxe with the Thai clinch finish. And that’s after a turbulent first round where he was dropped, beat up and barely survived Castaneda’s onslaught. Pulled it back a bit towards the end of the round then overwhelmed him and got the finish in the second. Loved this. Suddenly I’m a Santos fan. Not sure about the ‘Willycat’ nickname though.

Latifi vs Oleynik was what it was. Just two big old lummoxes past their best colliding and Latifi taking a decision. What a pair of gents though…

image.gif.e7b1c49d5d9e40e93895b11a1bde8b32.gif

😂 I said I favoured Oleynik in the opening post but, really thinking about it, it was always gonna play out something like this wasn’t it? Just on the physical shape of Latifi - no neck, short arms, low centre of gravity, plus being built like a tank and strong as fuck - how was a submission specialist Oleynik ever gonna get his game going? Sounds like Latifi is done as well. Good ol’ Some Fucker. He stopped short of actually saying it but this was the last fight on his UFC deal and him getting choked up and saying something like “everything comes to an end” pretty much confirmed his probably calling it a day. Oleynik should follow suit really. I like him but 45 years old, 1-4 in his last 5? He’s had a good innings but it’s all downhill from here.

Yes! Thank you Brendan Allen! One of the highlights of the card for me seeing that boring fuck Jotko get finished in a round. Lovely stuff. Justice for our Gerald. I was dreading another 3 round Jotko snoozer here but it became clear quite quickly when he took Allen down that he wasn’t gonna be safe there. Seemed he thought he’d be able to just hold Allen there and ride out the clock but Allen wasn’t having it and strangled him inside a round. Beautiful. I’ve said it every time he fights but I’ve always got time for a Brendan Allen fight. If he’s on a card, wherever he is on the card, I’m watching. Calling out Muniz, in Brazil, is ballsy as well. They mentioned it on the commentary but Muniz is really a guy who probably doesn’t have many lining up to put pen to paper to fight him. A dangerous guy without a high profile. Allen calling him out shows his confidence. I’d like to see that one.

Chelsea Chandler looked alright in her debut. Stoliarenko is nothing special but Chandler’s still fairly early in her career and she pretty much had her way here and got the first round stoppage. Just looked too big and too strong for Stoliarenko. The finishing ground and pound looked nasty. Not a bad way to kick off her UFC career. Nice to see a Stockton fighter not trying to talk like a Diaz for once as well.

Old Man Cannetti running through and submitting Randy Costa in about a minute all but confirms Costa’s going nowhere. Except maybe back to the regional circuit.

93-E99356-606-B-461-E-8838-789-EDC040-F2

Or back to the Wacky Races. He was never gonna be a world beater but I really thought he might carve out a nice little spot on the roster for years as just a guy who has exciting fights, kind of like Joe Lauzon who was one of his mentors. Clearly never gonna be a contender but I thought he could at least do well on bonuses. When he fought Yanez, while Yanez was always the better prospect, it felt like both had bright futures in the UFC. This was Costa’s third loss on the bounce though, and this one, getting finished in a minute by a 42 year old journeyman, yeah it doesn’t look good.

Turned out to be a better card than I expected, to be fair. Although the prelims were better overall than the main card.

One week closer to 280.

the prelims were pretty barmy, few surprise results not least Randy Costa who's prospect run has grinded to a halt.

I did like the look of Chelsea Chandler, bit of a tank in there. She might be a bit of a problem in there for most ladies, can't see many overpowering her.

Slava Claus may have the worst takedown defence in recent MMA history, real poor showing but does look good on the fight. The UFC should just pick him some favourable style fights and make it fun for the fans, he's never gonna be a contender.

That has to be the end of Oleinik. I don't think anyone's really handled him like Latifi did, he just did everything to shut him down and stay out of danger completely. Latifi is a decent little heavyweight isn't he?

I kinda zoned out during the main event so can't really give thoughts on a score, it was close though.

oh, and there's this:

Yes, what was the big secret for this? As far as I can see it was nothing different, there were no extra cameras or anything. Very strange.

Main event was fairly solid. Dern is almost identical to Demian Maia, in so much as they have you on the edge of your seat whenever it goes to the ground. Super entertaining to watch when it hits the ground. The last round was super tense, and I didnt even have any interest in who won at all.
