Thanks Devon. Had never heard of her before, but listened to a few other songs of her and just bought her greatest hits.

She's great. Make sure you track down her NSFW video for Libertine as well for... other reasons.

Cover of Rock The Casbah by the raï artist whose music inspired The Clash to write the original.

Did it? Topper Headon originally wrote it about his girlfriend but Strummer changed the lyrics to ones he’d been working on after jamming with a violin playing mate. I thought it was about the music ban in Iran.

Well, it's a tricky one: Taha gave them a recording of his work in 1981, and a few months later they released Casbah. He said in interviews that he reckoned that's what they based it on; in itself, that wouldn't mean much, but they never denied it, and even had him on their tours with them, so it's probably partially true at least.

In all honesty, I was just being a bit click-baity with that line, but there is a kernel of truth to it.

What's Strummer done? I haven't read up on him so much, but I was under the impression he was one of the good guys, socialist and all that.

As to Taha, maybe - like I say, was being a bit click-baity, but I also recognise one of my biases at play in this, i.e. that I was more inclined to believe an ethnic minority artist was under-appreciated and under-acknowledged for his influence on a major white act.

One from the previously-mentioned Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi, Japan's premier purveyor of "yakuza music".
